Is using a turbo controller in videogames cheating?

Do you think having a turbo controller in videogames is cheating?. A turbo controller is a controller which lets you hold down a button on your pad and it will automatically keep pressing that button so you don't have to mash it. I was wondering this myself and I'm asking you the community of the escapist forums whether you think it is cheating or not. Thanks in advance.

I don't believe it's cheating. You can mash it yourself though this controller is better for your hands. Anyone can get one so it's fair.

For competitive stuff, I'd say it is. Games like Call of Duty that have semi-auto guns like the FAL that can shoot as fast as you can tap the button are extremely abused with turbo controllers. I don't think I have ever seen a person use it and not have at least half of the lobby yelling at them for it.

I agree that's a balance issue but I think that's more of an issue with the game itself, turbo controllers have been around for long enough for Activision to come up with a max shot/second. I just like turbo controllers to make those quicktime events that need you to mash a button until your index finger feels like it's about to snap off a bit more bearable.

So I don't think it's cheating exactly but if a developer doesn't think to stop people abusing them you've got a serious gamebreaker.

If the devs are allowed to be too lazy to code in a simple firing speed restriction then I'm allowed to be too lazy to learn to press the trigger quick.

i can already mash buttons that fast.

it's why my brothers never let me use the plasma pistol in halo 1.

but yeah, i'd say in a competitive setting it could be considered cheating

I tend to think that does fall somewhat in being the developer's own fault, since even Semi-auto guns should be set with a limit to how quick they can be fired, or some other draw back that would prevent people from being able to fire an entire clip into someone in the blink of an eye.
Although, yes, I would say it is still cheating, if somewhat of a lighter form.

Developers should be definitely countering against it. And yes, I do consider it cheating as you can be limited by fatigue irl so having a turbo controller means that you have an unfair advantage over someone who doesn't have a turbo controller.

The only Turbo controller I've ever owned was for my Super NES. I found turning the Turbo function on for the Pause button to be extremely entertaining, as Mario would suddenly go into "slowmo".

As far as it being considered cheating, I'd say as long as you only use if for fun's sake, and not to gain an unfair advantage in a competition or contest, than go ahead and use it.

it simplifies button mashing.
I don,t consider it cheating it,s the same as having lightning quick thumbs.

The other half not complaining is the team that the guy with the turbo controller is on, right? :p

People only complain when somebody has an advantage over them, whether it's skill, turbo, better weapons, more teammates, etc. As long as somebody isn't doing something that alters the game, it's not cheating. Anybody can find one, it's not against the rules and the only people complaining about it are the ones getting beat.

For example, in one match somebody could have 3 kills to 20 deaths on one team while another person could have 39 kills to 1 death on the other team. The player who is losing will probably call the other player a cheater(regardless of if they are), say the weapons he's using are overpowered, blame the map or even blame his own teammates for one reason or another.

People just hate it when somebody is winning besides them.

It is cheating, no matter when you use it.

"Cheat: Act dishonestly or unfairly in order to gain an advantage, esp. in a game or examination"

Whether or not it's OK to cheat depends on whether it's going to ruin other people's games. If you're playing single-player and want to cheat, go for it, no harm done. In multi-player however it's a bit of a dick-move.
