Is your gender the same as your Avatar's?

I was noticing a lot of people had girl's as there Avatar's, and noticed that a lot of the girls that answered the questions in my "A question for all you girls out there..." threads had Avatar's of men (one girl had the Heavy from TF2 for example). Is your gender reflected in your Avatar?

Edit, new question for those that have a different gender then their Avatar, any reason why you chose that instead of your gender?
