Kyle OrlandIs the trend in gaming T-shirts just another retro fad, or something that will become a more permanent part of low fashion? Kyle Orland takes a look at today's offerings, and what they're still missing.

""Retro doesn't get old. It's already old."

What does that even mean?

Retro things are already old, hence they cannot become old. We know they are already old because being old is a prerequisite to being retro.

Games aren't the only retro things showing up on shirts. I regularly see all sorts of retro cartoons as well. Unfortunately, retro game stuff allows anyone to pose as if they were in on it from the beginning. Even though gaming was less than cool back then. Since it is cool now, everyone is grabbing at it to make a buck. It's not so much that some are good and some are bad, or that some are pushing humour where none belongs, or even that some are poorly done (or just in bad taste). It's just that there are too many of them. By flooding the market, the fun and charm of it has been too quickly washed off. Retro is fine, so long as it can contain a hint of irony. There is no irony (except the harshest) in a market flooded by retro gaming gear because too many people missed to train the first time.

I started collecting corporate booth crew t-shirts at E3 quite a few years ago, and have racked up a pretty good collection. I still have shirts from companies that folded or were absorbed by others, like a complete run of GT Interactive shirts from '97 on.
I find these shirts more interesting than the game shirts because of the, I guess historical interest is the best way to put it.

I've got a 'Gamer' shirt and 1-up mushroom jacket from thinkgeek, and I've also got 'designer' Tshirts with computer game images from Threadless.com [http://www.threadless.com/?streetteam=funkyj], plus Ratbag, Midway and Krome Tshirts which I often wear put and about, particuarly when I'm DJing.

Everyone recognises the iconic characters from their youth, and I quite often get comments on them, and that's why I wear them. It's an ice breaker, and because they're relatively rare in Australia (no one else is mad enough to import them ;), it gives me something to talk about with others because I'm a little bit shy.
