Dude, this love letter to Hawkins shows that you just got "tripped." That's what we used to call falling into the BS zone surrounding Trip, justlike the zone of unreality surrounding Steve Jobs. The guy is charismatic for sure. He could sell ice to the eskimos. But look, people ran from EA under Trip, they ran from the crappy games 3DO made, and now they're running from insanity at Digital Chocolate. Flirty avatars? Get real. Trip gets religion about something every year or so. This time is no different.

I can see those avatars selling like hotcakes to people who aren't me. Don't get me wrong - mobile gaming is one of the ripest markets in the world - but it has little to offer the core gamer. Mostly I'm just concerned that as talent flocks to the mobile market, people who happen to like their games with comfortable controllers and/or cinematic railroad plots will be left out in the cold. Mobile gaming lacks depth, you see. (Note: I may be biased against mobile gaming. I don't ever use text messaging and I think putting a camera on a phone is a waste of space and battery power.)

I'm going to use a food analogy. Mobile gaming is like candy. It's sweet, immediately satisfying, and too much of it too fast can wreak havoc on your oral hygeine. Er, hands. Meanwhile, modern console and PC gaming is like a rare steak. It's juicy and well-seasoned, but eighty percent of the world are vegetarians, so it's hard to find the best steak chefs or the best meat, and so the steak is usually a bit tougher than you'd like. The trick is either to get a little of both, or to just skip it and order the soup. (What is the soup, anyway? Whatever it is, there's a shortage of it).

I hear people talking about mobile gaming and I worry, 'cause I haven't yet had my fill of steak - or soup - and I don't want them to stop making games in something like a contemporary style (or whatever the soup is). Variety, after all.

hey give Trip Hawkins a break - not talking to the guy who wrote article (it's great) but to the guy who wrote first comment. You are just jealous to Trip Hawkins. Yes, Trip Hawkins did made some mistakes but he was not perfect like you... He actually made some big things with EA but created a monster later. EA is not taking 7 out of 10 Top 10 places of best selling games in UK. 7 out of 10! Real monster. Yes, I don't like that but early EA had some charm - days of Archon and Free Fall Associates etc... later it became really big business. 3DO was disaster but they actually made few good games and also NWC did get cash from 3DO to make also few good games (Heroes anyone?). So Trip Hawkins is a legend of gaming industry you like it or not. Trip all the best for your new company!
