Thanks for the great article. This was truly one of the best games ever made and one I still heartily recommend to people, even non-gamers. My wife (who was a non-gamer) actually got interested in adventure PC games because of this but no adventure could ever truly recapture the magic for her. She still complains to me about why ther is no Grim Fandango 2. Believe me it is not easy to explain to a non-gamer why this is not to be - they don't want the technicalities between corporation disputes. But all that said, this is why the game is lying in my cupboard always near the top of my heap of games. It does actually compel one every now and again to play it again and again... but only because of the sad fact there is no more of it and even more sadly there probably will never be. Come on Tim give us more please force it out of the corporations and let Manny live again! Psychonauts was good but we don't want a collect them all ! We want another new life experience !

I agree one hundred percent. Picked this game up three years ago and always go back, if only to let the music play! It had been so long since I listened to music in a game that wasn't angry death metal, cheesy elevator like music, or a 70's or 80's themes.
Truley THE apex of adventure gameing.

Truly a masterpiece, the last great adventure game to come from LucasArts. Oddly enough, I began playing it again this very day even before getting around to reading the Casual Friday articles. The game simply popped into my head, I a felt draw to play it. There are a lot of things I have to forgive when I play it now, as an older and more experienced gamer. A game today would not be able to get away with the harsh controls and rigid (due to pre-rendering) camera angles. Some of the puzzles and interface is hard to deal with. But the writing, the acting, and the music still make the experience delightful.

Excellent article. Magnificent game. Story needs to be this good again.

Ah, it's great to read about Rubacava after all this time. It was such a compelling location, with beautiful landscapes...

I always felt crippled that we couldn't see more of the city - at the same time, it forced you to imagine the world in its entirety.

I think Grim Fandango is an excellent example of how a game can be pure quality, without breaking the bank for 'immersive realism' or 'mind-shattering graphics'. Games are becoming more and more realistic, meanwhile forgetting that some of us want a fantasy.

I'll admit I thought that was all there was to Rubacava. When you first arive, it's just the automat, and the dock. Certainly it gets built up, and all the people who go to the cat track have to come from somewhere, but there isn't much of anywhere you can't go. El Marrow, on the other hand was such a large city, that we saw so little of.
