Allen VarneyFounded in 1983, Origin was one of the great computer game developers of the era. In 1992, they were acquired by EA, and in 2004 they were shut down entirely. Allen Varney looks at The Conquest of Origin.

Just sad what EA does to companys and to games. I understand they are a business, and have given alot to the community.... but just think... all of what they have taken away.

When its all about the dollar, you lose the heart witch makes your product worth buying.

It suddenly struck me as I read my article a second time: I should have called it "The Bleeding of Origin." And tied in the title with the whole red-dot thing near the end. Sigh. Well, maybe for The Escapist Ten-Year Retrospective Issue....

i am an avid origin/looking glass/black isle/cave dog/etc,etc, etc, etc fan,
i have all the classics, i even listened to the no regret soundtrack
while coding or doing some other stuff. great games.

first of all, i was surprised to read this story again. but at least i got to read Trip's answer also.
and i don't know whom to believe right now, but geniuses have the tendency to be arrogant
and ignorant at the same time that's for sure... i wasn't there so i'll just be sad origin died
and will not blame anyone for it, it won't resurrect it anyway...

EA was great as far as i remember some 10 years ago, they produced some great games.
where they stand today, i don't really care, i don't play that much these days :) but
painting a negative-only image about them is certainly childish and unprofessional.

another thing which starts to nerve me (and this magazine is surely riding this wave
to the death) is how we get the franchise things and originality and indieness are not
valued, bla bla bla.

repeat after me: there is no demand. at least not now. it's that easy.
we are minority. get over it. masses direct the market and the masses
want "need for speed 12" or another football, or games where you steal cars.

look at the companies who produced some of the best games ever. fallout, thief, system shock,
all the adventures (nobody plays adventures because people hate to think these days).

the companies which made these cult games all died of hunger because nobody bought their games. not the masses at least. they tried to be original and paid with their lives for it.
so quit whining about this, it's like a broken record.

you can be the best game designer ever, if only 10 people buy your "fallout galaxy",
you will look for another job if you want to eat.

I've liked reading these Origin articles, since Ultima 7 was the funnest game I ever played when I played it (and each consequetive one got worse and more mainstream), but each one seems to end before it's done, and goes to the "Click for blog page" page, with no end of sentence or the italics with name of author and other information what/not.

My Origin article ends with a bio notice about me, the same way all Escapist articles end with an author bio. Are you sure you've clicked through all the pages of the article, and haven't stopped at an ad page or something?
