We've all been there and share your pain. Some of my best memories are with five other friends, networked together in a friend's basement playing StarCraft for 16 hours straight! My son still begs me to play with him. A friend stuck at my house last week slipped StarCraft in (not having played it in years) and lost more than a couple of hours of his life to the alure of Terrans, Protoss and Zerg (oh, my!).

Amusingly enough, I must point out that the second screen for this article is actually from Warcraft III, of space orc.

But on the topic, I still slip back to Starcraft now and then, even though I'm a heavy Warcraft III: Frozen Throne and occasional WoW player. For that matter, I even go back to Diablo 2, though I have no idea why. I don't go back to games like Dune 2 and Tiberian Sun, but the multiplayer component and support of Blizzard Games often makes me return time and time again when no good current games are at hand. In a way, I believe that buying Starcraft, Diablo 2, and Warcraft III are the only games that have ever justified their investment - other games are just play and forget.

I'll never forget that 3v3 tourney I participated in, this one guy on my team was really good at zergling swarms, I built an air battallion of guardian aspects and the other guy followed with scouts. We made four easy victories, and then got beat by a combination of Seige Tanks, Carriers and Hydralisk swarm. Good times.

Its worth mentioning Blizzards commitment to quality level editors. My first real experience in level design came with Warcraft 2, but Starcrafts scripting suite and feature set really let me play with play. You can't ask for a better education.

StarCraft sure brings memories about LAN sessions and very, very tired eyes...

I'm probably going to buy yet another copy of the StarCraft Battlechest, since my 9-yr-old son claimed the last one.

I love the game, I just never really got good enough to want to spend a lot of time online, so I either single played or went to LANs with friends.

My first real encounter was at University in 1999 - I used to use the computer labs late and I started to notice a lot of people (usually Asian) were playing the game. I recognised the game, having read about it and played WC, and one night at a lab I spoke to a guy I vaguely knew who showed me where to find the game on the shared drives. That was a fun few months.

Of course now I play WoW and I've been unable to really play any other PC game properly since. Which kind of sucks.
