As someone who's been lurking around here since Unforgotten Realms and Doomsday Arcade and only ever flirted with actually being part of the forums, I'd say you guys have longer than you think.

This site has been "on its way to the grave" as you put it for quite a while now. I get the feeling it'll struggle on a while longer.

Yeah, I can't really see myself migrating to a new forum. If/when this site shuts down, I'll probably just stop posting in forums entirely.

I still remember my first post was actually arguing with someone about laws that made it illegal to sell M rated games to minors. It was actually a great experience. The person I was debating was quite reasonable and I had a great deal of respect for him afterwards. That's actually why I ended up staying and continuing to post on these forums. I'm honestly not sure I could have the same experience here today...

Anyway, I like this site. I haven't seen anything else quite like it and regardless, I'm not that interested in moving and starting from scratch somewhere else. Not like I don't have things that I can be doing with my time anyway.

Is Neopets still going? Maybe I will go back there. That is basically where I started with hanging out in forums.

*checks Neopets for nostalgia sake*

I am not going to Neopets. =. =;;

(Not that I was...I knew what I'd find, but still....yeeesh)

So this is how the escapist dies huh. a wimper in the night with not so much as a newspaper blanket. I remember coming to this site thanks to yahtzee stayed for the forums and lurked, rarely posted. I started in high school surrounded by the christian anti atheist bigotry you'd expect, but I found a place here. I could find like minded individuals that made that stuff seem far away. The brony wars had just started and came to crushing halt with the rise of Anita and GamerGate. From that point on anger, vitriol, overall pettiness sank in. Content left the site and now we're here even the topics are rehashed old stuff we have all been through before. Goodbye everyone and thanks for all the fish.

It was alright I suppose. It was my first forum though and I, and most everyone else were young so I mean, it wasnt deep political conversations. I did learn of The Killers through it.

Don't worry peeps, I'll play you guys out. Someone grab my violin please. I'm too old to start over so...

In all seriousness, Giant in the Playground is looking pretty good considering I read some pretty baller threads while lurking the forums. Also Order of The Stick was what got me to appreciate Dungeons and Dragons a lot more than I used to (Which was a lot to start with), so that's always a big plus.

I'll actually make the move if this place just up and suddenly goes down, but just in case until then, I hope all of you magnificent bastards have a good one. And I certainly hope to meet you all again at some point.

I know it's cool to hate on Reddit around here, but to be honest, the easiest thing would probably be to make a subreddit. You can keep your usernames (or some variation) and maybe get a flair that is in line with your interests. Subreddits are pretty alright when it's a smaller community. More discussion, less echo-chamber meme extravaganza.

Although.... I can't promise that prequel memes won't follow you wherever you go.

I remember a mod posted a thread about people contributing free content and everyone pretty much laughed in his face, but at this point fuck it, I'd consider it just to get some content on the site.
Hmyeah but the site has a shady track record of laying off people and breaking relations in the worst possible terms (a whole bunch of ex-contributors - Movie Bob, Arendt, Lincoln, LRR, the CM guys - are all gathered up on Twitter ala Batman villains licking their wounds and badmouthing The Escapist). And having mods come down to the forums like they're driving south of the border looking for cheap workers just repels me. If you want to "do your part" you can just give every article and every new content your clicks.

The community is still strong. And that's what matters. We all love each other and no passive aggressive bickering.
I looked at the community tab and... It's really confusing. It's like a non-anonymous 4chan?

Though if you all decide to jump ship, someone pm let me know where we go! I actually like you guys.
I'm gonna make another thread with a poll after this where we can all vote which site will be the "backup" site we'll go to if the Escapist shuts down. Or people could just go there now. I dunno. But yeah, we'll decide on something concrete.

Be sure to vote in the thread poll I'm going to make soon! We'll get this sorted out.

The concept of downvotes alone is really dumb. You see them in practice on Imgur and it's awful. And while a system with upvotes available in general is really great for pure content delivery sites like Imgur and Reddit, it's not so great for actual discussion. The simple bulletin board format serves that purpose much better. Or at least, that's my view on it.

TBF, Movie Bob got fired because of the shit he was saying on twitter.

Huh, I spent a lot of time on Neopets back in the day but I never visited the forums. Now Gaia Online on the other hand...hoo boy. I'm curious to check and see what it looks like now, but it was in the shitter even back in the days of yore. Can't imagine the hellhole it is now.

Huh... not sure where else I'd go.

The Escapist was pretty much my introduction to "the internet" and it's where I've stayed. It used to have a good variety of games, tech, science, tabletop and humour plus the smaller forums to tie it all together as a community, but I don't really know of anywhere else like that. Most places I'm aware of seem to be too specialist.

I spend far too much time doing fuck all on the internet anyway. Take it away and I'd probably go and do something useful and sociable.

Oh god, Gaia... left that place years ago and even then most of the people I liked were gone. I used to hang around Extended Discussion and it's subforums as did at least one other person who will go unnamed...

I've more or less moved on to social media (particularly Twitter because it's quite a useful tool for the communities I'm a part of) and Discord. I think it works for me. I mean, I guess I'd give a rousing recommendation for Discord. It's alright and you don't have to deal with anybody you absolutely can't stand. Of course, you have to feel some manner of significant connection through some other medium first. Or maybe not, but that tends to do the job for me.

Traditional forums are just going the way of dodo for better or worse.

Sure, and good riddance. But *no body* seems to leave on good terms is what I'm saying.

Like "This forum is dying! You can tell by the 4 pages of posts about how this forum is dying!"

It just giggles me. You people are adorable sometimes, you know?

Same thing Gametrailers went through before the inevitable end. People constantly saying the site was dying/dead, yet somehow there were always enough people around to keep that discussion going.

I used to be way into communities and forums years and years back, but I feel like they're starting to become more of a thing of the past. Personally I only ever frequent closed FB groups and Discord chats these days.
