Japanese Censors: Sexually Aggressive Women Turn Kids Gay

These minutes from a Japanese prefectural authority meeting show manga censors have some ... odd ideas.

Back in 2010 Japan signed into law a bill [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/106174-Child-Safety-Bill-Could-Cripple-Anime-Industry] that allows the government to censor, via a committee vote, media that "promotes illegal or immoral sexual activity." The law is almost exclusively invoked against manga; particularly "Loli" manga, which often depicts child-like characters in erotic situations. There was concern that the bill was worded so vaguely it would give censors a very wide purview, allowing them to force their moral views onto a medium considered by some to be art.

And, according to these minutes, taken from a meeting of the "2nd Miyazaki Prefectural Commission for the Promotion of Healthy Youth Development," that seems to be what's happening. At this point, the commission was discussing "boys love" and "ladies comics" which, although not-pornographic, do tend to be rather risqué.

Committee Member A:

In these books there is some violence and cruelty, and most have sexually provocative material.

In particular, many include scenes of women taking the lead ahead of men, and I think they'll promote the prejudiced view that women want this.

And if you keep getting these depictions of women taking the lead, matters soon develop in a homosexual direction and it must become difficult to develop sexually in a normal fashion, mustn't it?

This may not always be the case, but I think for the male consciousness they may end up thinking they cannot take the lead themselves, and so they tend to turn homosexual more often as a result.

I can't help but think it is very dangerous to our young people, should they see this sort of material mixed in amongst normal books.
It's hard to choose the most laughable concept; that the idea of women taking the lead in some romantic encounters is "predjudiced," that exposure to such unnatural acts will turn unwary male readers gay, or that homosexuality is "dangerous." Regardless, the concept of this person being in charge of censoring anything is terrifying.

No objection to these ideas were recorded in the minutes, but some commenters have suggested this may be due to the Japanese custom of avoiding public arguments. The group suggested that some manga should be labeled as "urgently designated harmful entertainment," but did not recommend any specific titles for the classification.

Coincidentally, it's worth noting that the bill enacted to censor these manga was only accepted after it was reworded to specifically exclude live-action pornography. I'm sure that was a great relief to Japan's bustling porn industry [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pornography_in_Japan].

I still find this whole situation hilarious. Now, I'm not one for censorship either, but the sheer insanity that this bill invokes on all sides is nothing but comedy gold.

I honestly haven't seen something that out-of-touch in a very long time. I think the last thing I saw was that horrible Rick Perry ad that popped up awhile back. Oi vey.

Ugh, another example of why I hate Japanese society. This is yet another facet of the sexist mindset that sex is an activity to be enjoyed by the man only, and that a woman "gives" her body to the man as some selfless sacrifice. No wonder that their society is so sexually repressed, if it refuses to admit that sex is a mutual partnership rather than a one-sided act. It's times like this that make me think that the US isn't really that bad after all.
Its hardly all of japan that is like that, really most societies have a view of women that is they are beneath a man, hell, even after the sexual revolution women are still struggling to get equal rights and they still regularly earn less then men, feminist is practically a 4 letter word since conservatives have done such a good job of demonizing it. Plus its not reasonable people that get assigned to things like this, its the more conservative and weird elements that get put on things like this.

That's okay, Japan. You can send all of your sexually aggressive women to me; I'll take good care of them and find them homes. Now where'd I leave the phone listings for all my single friends...?

I think I could understand being concerned about homosexuality when your death rate is higher than your birth rate, however I think sexually aggressive women would probably help that issue, not hurt it.

Ow...I think a few hundred of my brain cells started banging their heads on a wall while reading that. I mean seriously? Sexually aggressive women turning men gay? If anything it would make them more straight, have they even seen how the women throw themselves at men some manga? No androgynous Committee Member A, if anything it will lead to a generation of men who believe themselves to be chick magnets, or to put it in perspective, an entire generation Fonzies.

Don't lie to yourself Japan, you know you want that.

If they start sending them over, remember to add me to your contacts ;)

It's Japan, I don't believe it's safe for your mental well-beign to try and make sense of it.

...What? Seriously... what?

Eh, I guess these guys are the Japanese equivalent of our Bill O'Reillys and Rick Perrys.

I really want to know the story behind that picture though. It's hilarious.

If this world could use more of any one thing, this might be it.

Keep men thinking about boobs and they'll have less free time to shoot, stab, bomb, and maim one another. Also far less likely to hang themselves.

It's a man's world, sadly. Looking forward to the day women just revolt and we all become man shufu's.

Tentacles raping helpless, over-endowed schoolgirls is fine, But exposing the youth to the idea that women may actually WANT to have sex of their accord? Oh you wacky Japanese!
Actually I think it goes beyond that to be honest. I think it's a direct response towards the whole "sexual revenge" thing you see cropping up as a subculture, especially in Japan.

It goes beyond the whole "women wanting to have sex" or even normal kink with a woman taking the dominant role or even being a dominatrix, to the point of women using sex as a means of outright torturing and tormenting guys, and by this I don't mean in a "fun" way. Sort of a reversal of the whole "only men should enjoy sex" thing taken to an extreme.

I'm not sure if it was someone doing a thread here on The Escapist or whatever, but I remember a bit thing on "revenge love", and a whole subculture of "love motels" and such designed to cater to it, along with trends about male Japanese rape victims who were
unlikely to report what happened with women even more than if they had been violated by another guy, with cases of things like their nipples having been cut off and other assorted mutilations and so on.

It was a wierd thing and it's not my cup of tea, so I haven't spent a lot of time looking into it, but I'm sure we've all probably seen some Manga and anime with female characters that seem to encourage that kind of psycho-stereotype.

I could be wrong here, and it HAS been a while, but if all of that happens to be true to the extent I remember reading, it's quite possible that being from outside the society we're missing context especially seeing as it's one of those problems, that apparently isn't being addressed more directly due to it simply not being reported.

The bit about going gay is a bit odd, but I suppose I could see that connected to an arguement that guys are going to seek release somehow, and if they are scared of girls because of what might happen, with this kind of thing on the rise... yeah.

Now the methods being mentioned here seem odd, but looking at Japanese society I suppose I could see a connection that might not make sense to the outside. A girl doing the picking up and controlling the courting at a bar or club or whatever is far more likely to be able to control the situation, with most of these incidents probably coming from girls who picked the guy up. Thus a case where a guy makes the first move and picks the girl up in the "traditional" fashion and presumably controls the flow of the encounter due to taking the initiative is seen as a bit safer.

Merely a guess.
