Trying to equate the visceral reaction people have with rape versus murder doesn't really accomplish much. There are strong personal opinions that generally overwhelm approaching certain issues without emotional attachment.

That said, a lot of the posters here are advocating thought-policing. It's a slippery slope to decide what's best for another person in your own town, let alone another person in a different country/culture, about what they should or shouldn't be allowed to play based on your personal moral system.

I don't condone or like the idea of a rape game, but I don't think they should be banned just because the subject matter is uncomfortable.

unfortunately it doesn't work that way. I work with sex-offenders, and even aversion therapy doesn't stop the thought process. (one example of aversion therapy is reading or viewing a type of porn, say rape or pedophilia, while doing something 'awful', smelling a bit of rancid meat, or using a rubber band to sting ones wrist.)

You can't just ban a game because you preform illegal activities in it, then you'd have to pull GTA and man hunt.
YES the game is in VERY poor tastes and YES rape is a horrible crime, but Japan is still a free country and you have to remember: its a game.
we're always the first to say "video games don't incourage violance" so we can't say it incourages rape (atleast without being tottal hypocrites).
I agree that this game shouldn't be automatically banned, for the very reasons you state, but I have serious issues with anyone that thinks this shit is 'OK', for reasons below.

As much as I like to be the one to pull for the hard-working game devs, these guys can get bent. This is NOT the kind of game that should be encouraged. Out of all the illegal activities portrayed in games, I think this is crossing some sort of line.
Well said.

Personally it isn't whether or not an activity in a game is 'illegal' or not in the real world that matters to me. What counts for me is that rape is universally morally wrong (at least it is amongst people with reasonably healthy mental states).

Some people here have defended this game on the strength that 'its just a game, it isn't real' then point to GTA's casual sex, drugs and gunplay and that is a valid argument - until you consider the issue of context and motivation. These are usually optional activities - you can complete most games without having to hire a prostitute, take heroin or kill people who aren't threatening your own life. Even GTA or its clones draw the line by making it very clear that it is purely escapist fun. I'm all for fun and for choice.

But when the very object of the game is to rape and the player's measure of 'success' or 'failure' is measured by their ability to rape provocatively dressed women then there is something inherently wrong in this.

Another thing that bothers me is that this is probably a rubbish game anyway, the only 'thrill' a player will experience comes from the subject matter.

To those of you who actually pay for this crap (and regularly fantasise about rape): A good indicator of a psychopathic state of mind is that you put your own gratification (typically sexual) ahead of the well-being of your fellow human beings and for the sake of everyone around you please consider discussing your issues with a therapist.

Find me a handful of women prepared to say 'rape is fine by me, I dress provocatively so that I can get jumped by some stranger and forcibly made to engage in sexual intercourse against my will' and I'll reconsider my position.

You have to draw the line somewhere. You probably wouldn't get behind a game that's about bestiality or molesting children, right?

Incidentally, Rapelay has molesting children.

Following an emergency meeting of the Ethics Organization of Computer Software it has been determined, apparently for real this time, that rape games will be banned in Japan - sort of.

The meeting involved almost 100 representatives of various eroge companies but Canned Dogs says there was "surprisingly little" opposition to the proposed ban, with most seemingly resigned to the fact that rule changes were inevitable.
I mean, there reaches a certain point in which arguing devil's advocate makes you an idiot. Here's a hint: if you've learned your social mores from 4Chan, you might want reconsider before you're tossed in the clink.

I just went to an online store that sells Japanese erotic games, did a search for "rape," and got 2718 hits. Nothing has changed. I can only imagine this supposed "ban" was a giant misunderstanding or outright misreporting.

Actually, that doesn't have anything to do with rape; a girl crying is considering erotic in Japan.

It sounds like they're just getting ready to make things worse for themselves. Now people are going to be pissed that they are falsely naming the games and tricking people into buying them. Of course I would assume any intelligent person would know what they're buying before they buy it, but it's still a pretty dirty tactic. If you're going to make fucked up games like this atleast call them what they are.

Not to worry, there's more than enough in that game to have a lot to do with rape.

Hint: they put "rape" on the title.

Yes, but there's crying in material that doesn't actually involve rape.

Fine. In this particular case, the context is clear, seeing how it's coming out of a 10-year-old girl as you rape her in her room as teddy bears look on, but hey, lets just make real sure everybody's aware that the woman crying while you have sex with them is erotic in Japan.

Calling one of those games a rape simulator is just as accurate as calling CoD:4 a murder simulator. Welcome to the forums, Jack Thompson.

P.S.- I've played RapeLay, and I still know nothing about raping women.
Surprising you've played RapeLay and you still think CoD:4 = Murder is about as close as RapeLay = Rape. If you're going to take the time to simulate the tears and terror in the victim [http://www.somethingawful.com/d/hentai-game-reviews/rapelay.php] (NSFW), I'd say you indeed had the goal of creating a rape simulator. The only thing you're apparently pining over is the infeasibility of the scenario presented.
When you play CoD:4, blood sprays when you shoot somebody, right? Well in RapeLay, when you force a girl to have sex, they cry. It seems logical. We are constantly asking for more realistic graphics and actions in games, and a company provided it in both instances. Like I said, just because you're against something, it doesn't make it wrong.

Rape in real life is wrong, so is shooting people. But why is one game banned and not the other?

You can't make decisions on how to corner people to rape them, you can't even choose to be stealthy. This is just another hentai game but it has rape as a theme. One of the rape scenes takes place in a well populated park in broad daylight, and every one of them starts on a packed train. This is the worst rape "simulator/tutorial" I've ever seen. If anyone was to ever look to this thing for advice, they'd be screwed.

Just like CoD:4 doesn't teach you to kill, RapeLay doesn't teach you to rape. It just puts you in the situation.

............. They just don't help themselves do they? They seem to embrace being the weirdest nation on the planet with their hentai and 'rape games'. You'd think they'd try to shake off such a title but apparently not.

Honestly no, I dont. I stopped keeping track of these kinds of things here on the escapist when I realized it was impossible to have a civil discussion about it. I realized that after the frist Rape-lay article.

Yeah, that was unpleasant to say the least. She just kept throwing the same stuff about abuse, this forum hating women, and genital mutiliation in DRC(which, by the way, who doesn't just say Congo?) all over the place.

It's understandable that people have such a volatile response to something so taboo and unsettling, but respect for free thought and enterprise, have to at least be entertained.

Also, I've never seen an advertisement or anything for this game or any in its genre. It seems like these companies must be doing their business by being available to the niche market that is seeking them out.

So we're in agreement that the main thing that bothers you about this game is how infeasible the rape is.

Maybe you didn't play an English version of this, or maybe your brain was residing between your legs at the time, so let me spell it out for you:

The protagonist is upset because he was jailed for molesting one of the girls. So he decides he would like to get revenge by turning the girl's entire family into a perpetual nightmare by becoming his personal sex slaves. Thus, he stalks them in public locations and forces them into compliance. The first time he rapes one, he breaks the hymen. If he impregnates one, he has to force them into an abortion of he loses the game. Just to establish that the girls really aren't into this, another way you can lose the game is by allowing one of the girls stab you to death by not sufficiently breaking their spirit.

The entire game plays out as a rape simulator with its difficulty level set to "unfeasibly easy," but it's a rape simulator nonetheless, with quite a remarkable amount of detail spared to ruining lives.

On a serious note though, hooray a schism has arisen from the gaming community! (sigh) Why must we be so brazen as to defend ultraviolence from our own media, and chastise our brothers in the East when they bring to whole, the orange clock. Another, less flowery way to say this is:
STFU about some guy sticking his willy in girl who may not necessarily want it, when you are ripping a dudes d*** off and cramming it down his own throat!
