What I want to know is why they think this will make Japanese people want to eat at McDonalds.

I mean an advert saying "This is food for idiot Gaijin" does not seem to me to be a winning marketing strategy.

(Of course, whatever they did they'd never approach the heady heights of marketing awesomeness that was Pizza Hut supporting the rebellion. Everyone wanted a stuffed Cheese-kun after that. Or C.C. Either way.)

I always find it quite funny when a white person is made fun of, everyone just waves it off as humorous but if it was a black man everyone is up in arms about it. I personally couldn't care less about the ad campaign but if you're going to think of one as inoffensive you MUST think of the other that way too otherwise you're just being racist.

Before anyone says anything, this does not mean I condone racism of any kind. A joke that IS offensive is just wrong no matter what colour you are.

Oh, Japan...

At least OUR Ronald McDonald isn't psychotic...

Last time I checked, I believe he was in a strait jacket.

Anyways.

In my opinion, this generation is too soft.

I mean, It's not like they intended this commercial to be offensive, they just tried to make it funny.

No course of action was necessarily needed to be taken, at least not an action like what just happened.

Deal with it.

o_O ????????

The problem with trying to say something is racist against whites is that 'white' isn't really a race.

How can you stereotype the British, Americans, New Zealanders, Yugoslavians, Croatians, Belgians, and dozens of other nationalities with one stereotype? (and yes I know all those countries have other skin tones in too)

It's poking gentle fun at a tourist who kind of has to be foreign to be a tourist.

The fact that he's a geek is the geek stereotype, not a Caucasian one, after all, does Japan have no-one interested in science, computers and anime?

It would be like me having an ad where I had a sumo wrestler who couldn't eat a whole one of my new triple bacon cheeseburgers, because they're so big n satisfying.

I'm not making fun of the whole Japanese race, just that sumo wrestlers are well known for eating a lot. Sadly of course, my ad would be instantly thrown out and I'd have to hire one of the lardy WWE wrestlers from the US instead, to save me being called 'racist'.

I command you to make said commercial at once. Im imagining the look on the Sumo'd face as he's pushing the burger away while facepalming and shaking his head. NICE

So being white I'm not allowed to be offended by racism because my race doesn't exist?

How is this different from "black" not really being a race either?

No one ever said Japan wasn't racist... err, well I'm sure that's not true, but from what I hear Japan is fairly racist... anyways.

I often get the feeling Japanese people are intimidated by Americans, in manga and anime they are always stupid or bad guys... just manga and anime but still.

Anyways, I read the thing but I didn't really get it... are they trying to say stupid people eat McDonalds?

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa-whoa-whoa-WHoooa!

White people are pulling the intolerance card? Of all people? Was it one of the ones we've collected from nigh-everyone on the planet?

I'm white, and that's fucking hysterical. Anyone who says that's not funny is not white, they're a douche.

Douches come in all flavors people;Vanilla, Chocolate, sauerkraut, tequila, rice, doesn't matter what the race is, douches are all the same.

To everyone who's replying with, "I'm white and I think this is funny," well, if you live in a country where you're not in a minority, you probably don't quite get it.

It's easy to laugh at this if you're white and you're sitting at home in Aus or the States or wherever; racism has likely not been a large problem for you. I've always been a tolerant, anti-racist person on an intellectual level, but it wasn't until I started travelling internationally that I really understood what it meant to be discriminated against and why it hurts so much. I love Japan and its culture for the most part, but when I stayed there I had to deal with a lot of crap because I was white. It was mostly restricted to dirty looks and the presumption of idiocy for me, but I have friends who have been there and have been made to feel like absolute shit because of their race.

As the other posters who have lived (or currently live) in Japan have pointed out, stuff life this seems small, but it's mirrored all over the place in Japanese society, and when that stuff is confronting you 24/7 it wears you down considerably. So if you're sitting at home having a laugh, please consider that you possibly don't have the experience neccessary to properly understand the damage a campaign like this does to foreigners in Japan.

i find this absolutely hilarious! who cares if they make fun of white people, we kinda deserve it! and everyone knows what the japanese are like with foreigners, it's just how it is!
i also think the chinaman advert would be pretty funny, though i'll probably get called racist for saying that!
but really, i'm a white guy and i really don't care about some silly advert, it's quite awesome really.

And?

Nobody makes fun of white American people nowadays, I think they're well deserving of a good joke. The French, Russians and black people have been in the firing line for too long.
Um, you sure about that? Becuase, ya know.

Well, if America doesn't know, I'm not going to be the one to break it to her. France, Italy? Why don't one of you guys do it?

From what I've heard the Japanese are rather xenophobic. The word gaijin having taken on a sort of negative connotation. But then again it's all second hand... I'm not sure if it's valid. It really seems like a harmless joke though. I mean who cares if they're making fun of white people? White people make fun of everyone else.

Two wrongs don't make a right, matey, and intolerance begets intolerance. Besides, I'm not making fun of everyone else; I sure as hell didn't tick the white male box in the womb. Should I be punished when I go to Japan because some white dude discriminated against some other person somewhere?

Damn, I was hoping a big bunch of self-hating guilt ridden Japanese people would take care of this "problem" for us. Seems our luck isnt so good, and Japanese people are smarter than that.

Anybody of any race who feels the need to cause a fuss because they are offended would be put in front of a firing squad if I ruled the world. Seems extreme, but it might just get "sticks and stones" back into use pretty damn quickly and actually make the miserable cunts start to pay attention to it.

Aaaaaand may I direct you to the posters who actually live in Japan, a place may I add that do not like white folk as they are "outsiders".

See the problem now?

Check out the clearly white posters using Japanese phrases, sticking up for Japan and generally being the person that is in the advert. Oh the poetic irony, internet, oh the poetic irony.

Being totally honest, why does anyone give a flying fuck about this? I'm never going to see it. Hell, they probably do worse with white people in Middle East ad campaigns. And as I already said, it seems a lot of people seem to see themselves as defenders of that godly isle that is Japan who fit the sereotype perfectly. I bet half of them can quote basic japanese they learned from mangas. Badly.

Yeah of course I see the "problem", I already told you what the problem is. Twats today take things far too personally. Yeah so they treat you like an "outsider", which you technically fucking are, so treat them as behind the times morons. Jesus christ were a society of fucking mollycoddled babies today arent we? Unless someone actually breaks the law by hating you so much they want to physically harm you, youve got nothing to worry about. Despite the popular trend of treating whites as the only intolerant bunch, you get hated and treated as an outsider by lots of people pretty much anywhere you go on this planet.

So what your trying to tell me is that there is no records of a Japanese person attacking a white person at all in Japan because of his race? my my some one has their head high in the clouds. I dont find this advert offensive but I do find it dangerous to promote this image to a country that already doesn't like foriegners which in turn doesn't help with the racial abuse "outsiders" get.

These kind of adverts do nothing but help promote the idea that "They're not one of us, they're also stupid and cant even speak our language properly" and there for promotes racism. Would you kindly look at the bigger picture? I mean gollies we are a society of intercoursing short sighted babies today aren't we?

And yes white folk are outsiders but theres a diffrence from thinking "He's not one of us" to going "He's not one of us, I wont hire/talk/treat him fairly".

Lets take another example. I'm from Britain a white country when I see a asian person or a black person walking down the street I dont see them as a foriegner until they tell me that they are, I see them as a fellow country man who lives in Britain, the Japanese dont see it this way beginning to understand?.

Edit: I'm well aware that most Japanese folk aren't probably violently racist but what I've seen from first had accounts to reports there is a higher number of violent attackers than in some other countries such as Britain etc percentage wise.
