IMO White males tend to be far harder to offend than anyone else on the planet, so i think we will be fine.

The problem with trying to say something is racist against whites is that 'white' isn't really a race.
So being white I'm not allowed to be offended by racism because my race doesn't exist?

How is this different from "black" not really being a race either?
Because black and white aren't, so if as a Brit, someone came up to me and shouted 'fuck off back to france you cheese eating surrender monkey!' I think I'd just laugh and wonder what the hell he had been taking, I certainly wouldn't be offended by the racial slur against my whiteness.

As such, if someone goes up to a black guy in New York, and tells him to 'go back to the jungle you spear chucking savage', then perhaps everyone that hears it should ridicule the ignorance and stupidity of it, not the failed racism.

The way I see it, comparing a black american to an African jungle native, is exactly as idiotic as ridiculing me for being French just because I am white.

OF course the vast majority of the world won't agree, but I don't hold with 'black' and 'white ' giving you any kind of special link with other black n white people.

I'm not against pro black things, because people ARE stupid enough to discriminate based on skin tone, but a black new yorker, a black australian and certainly a black tribesman don't really have that much in common. In fact send a black Frenchman to Britain and we'll ridicule his accent, not his skin tone. Britain, a special kind of stupid. :D

I think after all the shit white people have said and done about other races, they're allowed to take a pop at us now and again.
I mean is anyone actually offended by this or are they just being offended for the sake of being offended?
I doubt anyone is offended, unless they are thick and quite possibly christian white supremists... *ahem* anyways.

Well I'm fairly sure just about every race has been racist at some point or another, the 'white folks' just get the short end of the stick cuz they're winning.

Its not even about white people, its about tourists. Im certain most japanese tourists are white, hence this guy being white too. No one said revenge of the nerds was racist for defaming white males. You're looking for something to whine about. If he spoke perfect Japanese and was well versed in all their customs then you'd be pissed he LOOKED like a nerd.
This is no worse than the stride gum commercials with the CHINAMAHN telling the (naturally) WHITE stride representative 'SEE!? STWIDE GAHM BAD FOH BEESNESS' because no one spits out their gum and buys more. No one complained 'bout that. because whites were portrayed perfectly fine there. If your gonna raise hell over this, you'd better be boycotting Stride too, and anyone who ever used ANY stereotype EVER.

What racial slur against your whiteness? that's just a racial slur against your "Frenchness"

You honestly believe a black man wouldn't consider that to be racist against his colour? I know I would.

Black and White aren't races you're correct, but that doesn't mean that is not the underlying basis of most racism directed towards those of the oppposite colour.

When I was in school my colour was in the minority and most taunts or bullying I recieved was based on my being white, not on my accent.

Poking fun at other cultures is ok in my book aslong as its only for a joke and not to insult said culture, its their TV they can put up what ever ads they want. Although I find it funny that they're poking fun at a man for only knowing the foreign version of their stupidly complex language, I mean really two alphabets? one for foreign words and the other for Japanese ones? its madness, madness I say!
I have no quarrel with the advert, I was just pointing out that Japan needs to change its view on outsiders, its all fine and well saying that if they act like idoits then we should view them as such but how is that helping the people who live in Japan and have to deal with that abuse day in and day out? they can still view them as idiots but cant do much about it without getting into more trouble can they?

I realise its going to take years for them to get out of that mind set but that doesn't mean I'm going to sit on my hands and go Ho hum dearie me and think its ok for it to happen.

I would never wish Britains multi culture stand point on anyone, as all our government seems to be doing recently is bending over backwards to appease the few who scream Islamaphobia at anything that looks at them funny. Anyway dont have much else to say apart from that I hope in future debates you can stay away from the swearing, doesn't really help to convey your side of the arguement very well as it makes you look rather immature.

(just like some of the things I've said makes me look like a twat.)

Agreed. It's the double standards of political correctness that annoy me, not political correctness itself. In the case of this advert, the usual rule regarding racism seems to apply: you can be as racist as you like, so long as you're not white. This, in my humble opinion, is utterly disgraceful.

It annoys me no end. There would unquestionably have been an uproar if a Western advert had featured an offensive portrayal of a Japanese person, so I think it's right that people are demanding the removal of this one.
'twould make a lot more sense if no one ever got upset over such commercials, regardless of who it targeted.

Well, I can see this as being a big deal, but not the way people think.

The fact that Japan is extremely racist towards white people shouldn't come as a news flash to anyone. People who have followed video games (and other fandoms) , and some of the logics behind what they release and such shouldn't be even remotely surprised. Especially if you've ever read any translated periodicals on the internet, or watched much subtitled Anime (especially older stuff). Not to mention some of the plots in their pop culture (again like anime and such) which pretty much takes a casual anti-white stance as a given in many cases (doesn't even need explanation or justification).

They have needed a figurative kick in the teeth for a while, this is just a bit more overt than most things.

Ultimatly the problem *I* see with the ad campaign is that by being that overt it shows that they are getting over their fear of the US and the occupying military force we have in the region. That is *NOT* a good thing for US/Japanese relations.

As cruel and brutal as it sounds, I think a lot of the positive change and gradual reductions in xenocidal outlook hade come from forced humility and the fact that we pretty much had a massive force camped on their doorstep since World War II (despite all pretensions, we pretty much occupied Japan as a naval base, and it's become of key strategic importance in that entire region). If they get this overt about it without any kind of "Reminder" I think progress will cease and it will gradually get worse.

That's just an opinion. Truthfully I like some aspects of their culture, and a LOVE a lot of their science fiction and fantasy, however for the most part I think Japan is a mess and we relaxed far too much, far too early in dealing with it.

People are VERY quick to forget how racist the rest of the world is compared to the US. We love to criticize ourselves and listen to UN whining, but in the end our openmindedness and the very *DESIRE* to be extremely tolerant is very unusual globally. That's why it surprises people whey they see something this overt, especially directed at the white majority (well white majority in the US) who we see as being the racists rather than the victims.

I think people are a bit too dismissive about this, and that it's a bigger deal than it might seem at first. A few fanboys and editors being racist in a game periodical is okay, and at least the game companies and such would give evasive lip service around the idea of anti-western racism, trying to make such accusations seem absurd. This however is on a whole differant level, being up front, and directly "in your face".

Think of it as what Sambo was presented as (as opposed to what it was) except directed at whites instead of blacks.

What on earth makes you think we should "help" the people out there in Japan that have to put up with this kind of stuff? My entire point behind this is "stop screaming bloody murder every time you feel offended and expect people to give a shit. Instead, deal with it yourself!"

As for not swearing, no thanks I think I keep right on fucking doing it. You see, you may find it distasteful, but I feel it fills my expressive needs quite nicely. As we may have established, Im not the type of person to stop doing something to spare your feelings or avoid you judging me.

Besides, nobody on the Escapist, poster or moderator or editor should dare chastise anybody here about swearing.

We ARE talking about the site that puts up a video where Yahtzee uses the glorious "triple cunted hooker" phrase. Double standard much, hmm?

Ok thats fine but I'm going wash my hands of this, you can continue to behave like a spoiled child and rant and rave at the world, I on the other hand am going to move on. Once you've learned to debate in a civil manner then I will reckonise you as a person until then I'll take your advise and see you as a ill tempered child.
