Okay, my only experience in Japan is living here as a member of the armed forces stationed here, but the Japanese aren't quite as Xenophobic as you think. The elderly might be, but the younger generations who probably actually eat and work at McDonalds aren't.
If you ask me the concept of a person speaking very broken japanese when he's a tourist in the country is alot better than the reality, where most of us barely know our basic courtesies. From what I see the japanese actually find it as endearing to see someone put forth the effort to speak japanese as americans do with english.

It shows the integration of racial stereotypes into the japanese psyche because this isn't just some jab made by a comedian, but the ad campaign of a mutli-national corperation, carefully crafted to resonate deeply enough with it's viewers that it compells them to be consumers.Cunnysmythe said:

Exactly. Whether we deserve it or not isn't the issue, it's the principle that no one should have stereotypes thrown about making them look stupid.
