I think after all the shit white people have said and done about other races, they're allowed to take a pop at us now and again.
I mean is anyone actually offended by this or are they just being offended for the sake of being offended?
Well to start with yuor first half there... You should try reading up on what the Japanese did to the first few waves of foreign sailors to port at their cities before you go blaming whites for everything racist. Yuo can also blame the blacks for slavery of blacks, seeing as most slaves whites used that were black were barted for from african villages. Or you can also look that asian slaves were enslaved by their own people and sold, or that the Tibetins still sell young girls into bondage to this day. But hey.. that would actually be researching the roots of slavery instead of just going by what the majority have watered slavery down to
Oh I know other races are capable of cruelty to each other, don't worry. But yeah there's no entitlement just because one race is more known by what they've done then others.
Either way, this commercial is just silly and compared to some of the stuff in Anime, is pretty harmless.
Yeah, like Spriggan XD
They find Noahs ark (In this cage it's a giant magical monolith that can create anything and destroy everything) and Who are the good guys? Of all the fukin choice.. the Japanese.... AND THE FRENCH! (This movie is SO unrealistic! Not once did the suave french character consort with a Nazi or surrender to anyone who so much as thought in his direction (Note, this is a joke obviously (Note Note: Triple Brackets! OMFG!))) And who are the bad guys who want to take it over and use it to reshape the universe in their image while the french and japanese meerly want to keep it and study it for archaeological reasons? You guessed it, THE AMERICANS! XD And they are so grossly stereotyped unlike the Japanese or french. The Americans have the following characters.

Big dumb guy who shouts patrotic statements and blows up people with big guns.
Sniveling little weasel of an adult/kid that is so smart, but has 0 in his wisdom attributes so the wise japanese character can take him down easily.
Corrupt government who wants nothing but to destroy the world (I guess... because it's there and they have nothing better to do on a saturday night?)

I was in Japan a week ago and I saw some of these commercials and it really didn't seem racist to me at all.
My problem is not with the ad, I am a white nerdy American and I find it FUCKING HILARIOUS!

My problem is that if we did such a thing in America, the FIRST thing 90% of the world would do is go "ZOMFG RACISM!" why?
A) It's America, it's okay to be racist to them but anything they do is out of racist spite.
B) America has a large white population, so despite whites lately being out numbered by hispanic persuasion ethnicity, America is obviously mostly white, therefore it is racist (Because as we know, only white people can be racist.)

Yes I know... Black people could be racist too... but they won't because they are always slacking off, those lazy nig- *Cuts to credits*

From a White Guy in Japan:

Yeah, ok. It's funny. And maybe it's even a little accurate. Some white guys come here for the "Akihabara" part of Tokyo and don't give a damn about the 2000+ years of history and the fact that they don't necessarily speak english over here. Businessmen here think it's cute and humor them, but never promote them, so they end up going back to the states.
In short: Im less worried about the stereotype of the white guy than I am about the reality of it.

However!

Japan being a homogeneous society means they get their basis of knowledge from only the most popular sources ie: movies, television, etc. Ask them about native americans and they'll put their hand over their mouth and make the noise. (ive seen it happen more than once). While Americans know we need to laugh at ourselves, there's also the fact that some of us need to do work over here. If people cant take us seriously because of a stereotype built off of some silly joke, then we're kinda fucked.

To tell you the truth, it's already hard for foreigners to work over here. Jobs are still limited and Japan will always hire Japanese first. They're even importing Japanese who have moved abroad to Brazil and so on to fill the generation gaps that are going on. Yeah people say they treat us like Gods here, but that's pretty much only in Roppongi. Socially we do ok, but for real world stuff like jobs, we get really fucked.

Sure there are probably people saying silly things like "silly white boys taking offense to everything" and so on, but the truth of the matter is, stupid shit like that really DOES have an effect on people who dont know anything about white people yet.

Like I said, I can take a joke, but I can also see how this would actually do some damage.

You can always tell who lives in Japan and who has nothing to do with Japan, but likes to hear their own voice. People who write "harmless joke" and "get over it" and "it means nothing move on". Perhaps my favorite is "I was under the impression that foreigners were treated like gods in Japan". All my friends seem to believe that as well as that Japan is a magical place floating in the clouds.

Then there is 'squares' who clearly lives here and understands "Mr James". It's not really offensive and actually somewhat funny, but there is an underlying message it promotes. It shows how they see us and where we belong in Japan. Some of my students, who love McDonalds, are already calling me that and linking it to me because they saw it at McDonalds so it must be ok.

I wonder if McDonalds can make other characters around the world based on this philosophy. How about Mr. Zulu for Africa. He can throw spears at hamburgers. Mr. BoomBoom the terrorist. Mr. ChingChong in China "Oh me likey ham-baaa-gaa".

No I guess those would be racist and horrible, but something about white guys is ok.

And?

Nobody makes fun of white American people nowadays, I think they're well deserving of a good joke. The French, Russians and black people have been in the firing line for too long.

Well, I don't wear a monocle or speak with an effete British accent (although I can put one on), and I don't drink eight cups of tea a day (to my knowledge, that much is very bad for you) and I don't suck limes and whatever other stereotypes you have about Brits, but you don't hear me whining about it and I don't have a Committee for the Protection of Lexes. Fuck it, WHY don't I have a committee?

At first I was offended at the idea of this racial stereotype until I read "Me likee McFlied Lice!"? I lost it. You know what, its funny. Everyone needs to learn to laugh at themselves, me included. Is the white bumbling idiot absolute truth? No. But all stereotypes are based on some form of truth and in this case its pretty funny if you think about it. Foreigners, especially on vacation, are funny no matter what country you live in.

It's a harmless joke, and yet that kind of joke is "taboo" for white people to make about people of any other ethnicity or nationality. *sigh*

I don't have a problem with it, and I don't think anyone should have a problem with a Chinese caricature saying "Me likee McFlied Lice", either. Lighten up!

After us Australians as a nation got branded racists after the whole 'Jackson Jive' thing,I find it reasuring to see were not the only ones that get smited with the 'big ol' PC finger pointed at anything that could possibly offend.

And lets face it every country has lots of those finger pointing issues right?

Name me one country that acually measures up this ridiculous PC,mythical, unattainable standard of morality.

Besides McDonalds gets the last laugh.Turning healthy rice eating Japanesse into a nation of fat-arses.

Eh. I honestly don't find that offensive, after being called various racial slurs and being attacked by some crazy guy because he thought I was from Guatemala (I'm not). While this is in poor taste, it's hardly debilitating.

So... Caucasians get to have the KKK and be racist assholes, but when someone does the same to us we cry out that it's not fair? Wow... that's just embarrassing. Honestly, I think that that campaign is amusing, and in light of how often Americans stereotype Asians (or any other ethnicity), is pretty funny to see the same thing happening to us.

I wonder if it has anything to do with latent radiation....

Considering all the stabs American television has taken at other races, sure we can see some payback, no big deal really. But in a McDonald's commercial? ... I have to agree with them there. Thats just exceptionally bad judgement. Isn't McDonalds supposed to be friendly?

We don't 'get to have' the KKK, nor be racist. The KKK was a terrible part of America's history, and is universally looked at with shame and revulsion. Only idiots and bigots take any kind of pride from that, or any other racist organisation. And not every white person is a racist asshole. In fact, most aren't. Only a small minority feel the need to advertise their own ignorance.

The reason people are crying out that it's not fair is because... it isn't. If we live in a society where racism isn't tolerated, then that applies to all races. If some races are protected from insults and abuse, but others aren't, then guess what... that's racism. It doesn't matter what white people did to other people decades ago. What matters is that people around the world are treated with the same respect, regardless of whether their skin is black, white or polkadot blue and green.
I think you misunderstood my post, I was trying to make the same point you are: Americans tend to not seem too perturbed by racism against others, but are pissed when it happens to them. I know that a lot of caucasians aren't bigoted fucks (I like to think that I'm not, for instance).

In other words, I'm in total agreement that such a double standard on racism is intolerable. I guess I was just being more sarcastic about it, and since that can be hard to convey via text, that may be where the confusion came from.
