I am really unaware about the situation of white people in Japan, because I don't at all understand why anyone would be insulted by something like this.
It seems this kind of stuff usually tells a lot more about the people who manage to be insulted by every other thing, than it does about the people supposedly flinging insults.

Hmmm, is this about white people, or Americans, like some comments suggest?

I'd like to point out that the Japanese have a history of this. In WW2, they embarked on a strategy of removing the 'superiority' of the white europeans in the minds of the natives in places like Singapore by degrading them; working them to death to build railways and decapitating them if they were too sick to continue working. In fact, some of the shit they did in WW2 was actually worse than the antics of the nazis: the rape of Nanking comes to mind.

With that kind of history in mind, the Japanese would be well advised to consider how their ad campaigns might be construed.

Who cares? Yes, it's vaguely insulting, but the last thing we should do is have a thermonuclear meltdown over this. Because it'll just make us look childish, even if we do have a point.

That does seem to be unnecessarily offensive. If the stereotype was of anyone besides white people there's no way it would be allowed. And that's unfair.

Anyone getting worked up about this deserves a slap, anyone who is black, british, gay, japanese, russian, german etc. is made fun of, but anyone who is white and american is super human (i.e. Nazi Zombies is the greatest example of this, out of all the bios Dempsey is the most "hardcore badass" where everyone else is either strange or evil) so just chill out, no-one cares.

And?

Nobody makes fun of white American people nowadays, I think they're well deserving of a good joke. The French, Russians and black people have been in the firing line for too long.
Correction, EVERYONE makes fun of white people in America. White males and obese people are the only two groups of people left that you can make fun of without being "insensitive" or a racist.

So if a white person is made fun of it's nothing, but if any other person is made fun of it's rascist?
Yes, that's how political correctness works.

Well, I only have my own experience to go on, but I was treated three different ways when I was in Tokyo. If I was in a service location (hotel, restaurant), everyone was quite nice and tried their best to be helpful to me, despite my inability to speak Japanese. If I was on the street, I was soundly ignored -- just like everyone else. The one and only time I was ever laughed at for not knowing Japanese was at the Tokyo Game Show, but even then it wasn't a "you dumbass" kind of thing, but rather a "well, how the heck am I going to communicate with you?" rueful sort of chuckle.

All in all, a far better reception than I would get in, say, my home city of Philadelphia.
really?, that surprises me as when i went to japan we met several helpful people on the street, who offered to give us street directions in english
Maybe because I was in Tokyo? It certainly wasn't personal -- everyone was doing their level best to mentally create a small, impenetrable force field around themselves by ignoring everyone around them.

THANK GOD!!

White people don't get made fun of enough. And yes, people will take offense to this, but that's normal.
