Japanese Police Sergeant Charged With Illegally Recording Anime Movie

Who watches the watchmen watch movies?

Japan's recently strengthened anti-piracy laws have foiled yet another dastardly copyright violator and, oh dear, it appears the perp is in fact a policeman. The Fukushima Prefecture police force announced on Thursday that they've charged a 38-year-old male expressway police sergeant with violating the Japan Copyright Act by recording a showing of Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 2nd A's.

In response to the charges, the police force has reduced the sergeant's salary by 10% for one month. Oddly enough, according to investigators, the cop actually recorded the film on three separate occasions in separate theaters. Theatre staff reportedly witnessed him setting up his camera and audio recording equipment in his seat at a Fukushima City theater on August 23rd.

As for the film itself; Nanoha is pretty much exactly what you'd expect from a movie with "magical girl" in the title, but you can see the trailer in the above right if bobble-headed teens, random glowing lights and preposterously saccharine Japanese pop music are your thing.

Under a Japanese law enacted in 2007, recording audio or footage from a movie is prohibited for up to eight months after its opening day. New copyright laws introduced this June have made smuggling hidden recording devices into movie showings an offense.

Animated movies have been making a killing in Japan this year, with Evangelion Shin Gekijōban: Q Quickening (Evangelion 3.0: You Can (Not) Redo as it's called in the west) and the two Puella Magi Madoka Magica movies being amongst the biggest releases of the year.

I think it's pretty obvious that that IS my thing :D

But seriously the strangest part of this story has to be that he recorded it three separate times...

... at different theatres.

The thing I took away from this article, more than anything else, is that everybody in Japan has their otaku fix. Even middle-aged police officers.

I had a sudden flashback to the Seinfeld episode where Jerry is forced to film a movie and ends up wanting to become some boot-legger extraordinaire. I like to imagine that that's what happened to the cop, some guy who got a taste for it somehow and now know's no other life...well besides police work of course

Cop by day, relentless movie pirate by night? It's like a very boring episode of Dexter.

I've seen people joke about stupid sequels by subtitling them "The Quickening" (similar to Electric Boogaloo), so I got a chuckle out of this.

I have to wonder if this guy was intentionally trying to get caught or something. Three attempts at recording the same movie with separate machines for audio and video? It's either that or the quality was predictably too terrible to watch.

so if i waited 8 months and a day in japan, i could record at my leisure?

Not just a pirate, but a perfectionist pirate. Dammit, man, if people are going to download movies recorded in theaters, they should expect movie theater patrons walking across the frame now and again...

i though this was going to bash some cop for downloading a file somewhere deep in the internet, but no, they actually caught the right guy now - the one in the cinema with a camera.

Now can they hurry up and bring them three to the UK on Blu-Ray please? Go on Japan, you know you want to.

Why is this a news headline?
I recently saw someone drive a bit too fast, is that something for the news as well?

Maybe he wasn't happy with how the first two turned out? Usually bootlegging a movie like this makes for really shit quality.

"Tonight's the night, and it's going to happen again, and again, has to happen. Nice night. Fukushima is a great city, I love the Japanese food, sushi, my favorite. But I'm hungry for something different now...cause Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha the Movie 2nd A's is playing and no one's stopped me yet."

...Yeah, even his Dark Passenger is really boring.

That's not actually entirely accurate. It seems like it at first glance, but it's more like a mech anime disguised as a magical girl anime. Their costumes and attacks and stuff are frequently fairly blatant references to things from various Gundam series etc., the target audience is actually male, and I remember reading somewhere that the TV series originally aired at like 1am.

...yes, I did watch the show the movie is based on. I had a lot of free time, and when I heard it described like that, I couldn't help myself. The first season's kind of mediocre, but it's fairly entertaining after that, if you're amused by the idea of little girls essentially acting out giant robot battles and blowing up cities in the process. Heh.
