Jar Jar was an element of slapstick humour for the children who would watch Star Wars. If I remember rightly, episode 1 was a PG (Parental Guidance). It's not like it was for more mature audiences as the others were.

No one had any problem with the troll race of world of warcraft.
Not familiar with that reference, but I will say that I don't think Jar Jar is racist... just to save myself from any flak... just saying that's what those idiots thought... and they are idiots. Especially when they said that the image of Lebron James on the cover of Vanity Fair was racist.... stupid people.

I don't see anything racist with Jar-jar.
Some thought Jynx (the Pokemon) was racist because her original design was black and had large lips. Woo.

Wasn't the original trilogy PG as well? (If I remember correctly)
Yes they were, but then again, it was quite dark for a PG. The original trilogy wasn't aimed at kids, barely any children watched it until it was on VHS etc. Lucas knew that kids were interested in Star Wars by this time, so he gave them a little character to relate with.

Also, the PG 13 rating did not exist until 1984 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MPAA_film_rating_system), and seeing as Star Wars was deemed not "offensive" enough to get an R rating, it got a PG rating.

The character of Jar Jar Binks is not racist. That doesn't make sense anyway, but...

The previous black character, Lando, was more or less a white guy who happened to be black, and nobody really complained about him. What I wonder is whether I hate Jar Jar (and I do, with a passion) because the character was absolutely stupid (and he was the dumbest character ever), or because I've got a racist streak locked up in the closet and this is his way of making an appearance.

Jar-Jar is Jar-Jar a Gungan: anyone who is bound and determined to find racism in any character, will. It's partially determined by how much of a racist you are. If you want to say the Gungans are a direct insult to Jamacians because the way Jar-Jar talks bears some semblance to a Jamacian lilt... then you should be finding something inherently wrong with the way you percieve Jamacians.

I think it's pretty straightforward. He's a caricature of black people. His speech pattern is definitely influenced by Ebonics, his dress, and that of the Gungans as a whole, seems related to Caribbean modes. Finally, a great deal, if not all, of the Gungans are portrayed by black actors. It's a pretty clear he's as much a caricature as Al Jolson in The Jazz Singer. It's equating blacks with "the Other" by literally making them alien.

And, if you want to argue that "oh, well, that's sort of an accident, or maybe Lucas doesn't mean it to be taken that way" I'll say this: I'm sure it was an accident, and I'm sure it wasn't meant to be taken that way. But as aliens, evolving entirely separately from humanity, there's absolutely no reason they should have speech patterns even remotely resembling ebonics.

Lastly, the issue is not even really that Jar Jar is a caricature in his similarities. Its that George Lucas then makes the blunder of having what essentially boils down to "the black character" be a bumbling stupid idiot who succeeds solely by screwing up SO BADLY that he comes out the other end of failure into grand success. Also, to really drive home the point, Lucas makes the Gungans spear and catapult wielding jungle people.

He was SOOOOOOO a Jamacan stereotype and let me tell you, even if he wasn't a stereotype he'd still be loathed. Just make the character a Trandoshan, something vaguely cool.

Yes, but Lando was at least functional. He wasn't a slap stick character with stupid dialog. No one cares if a black character is made TOO white. If he's made TOO black though, that's a problem. Or if he's made TOO stupid in comparison to the white characters.

What, you mean like R2-D2 and the Ewoks? The Star Wars series has always been aimed at kids and nothing any of us say will make it any different.

Also, people can find something offensive if they really try. I could make a ten minute video talking about pineapples coming from mars, and I bet someone could find it offensive because I was "subconsciously suggesting that all black people are aliens, and therefore not human" or some other bollocks.

People are bitching because he is making Jamaicans look like Jar Jar Binks. He was just supposed to be laid back and appealing to the kids.

not to mention people have a lower tolerance now than they did. What was PG then won't be rated as PG now.

He was played by a black bloke on a blue screen with a Jar Jar Binks head on top of his and told him to use a pimp's strut. That racist?
