Javier Bardem Might Be the Next James Bond Villain

The man who won an Oscar playing the serial killer from No Country for Old Men is in talks to be the bad guy in the next James Bond film.

As far as popcorn action films go, James Bond movies are pretty much the gold standard, and the plots remind me more of a videogame than anything else. The iconic main character is completely badass in every way, and he has to jump through several plot hoops in order to defeat the villain. And like every good videogame, the villain is often the most important indicator as to how good the movie will be received. In that case, having an amazingly skilled actor play the next Bond villain gets an A++ from me. Javier Bardem, perhaps best known for winning an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his role as the creepy killer Anton Chigurh in the Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men, said yesterday that he was indeed speaking to director Sam Mendes about appearing in Bond 23 [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1074638/].

"I'm a huge fan of the James Bond saga," Bardem told the Los Angeles Times. "When I was little, I went watching Mr. Connery doing James Bond with my father. Who in the world would think I'd be in one of those movies?"

Bardem hasn't committed fully to the role, and he said that he would only take the part if the script held up to his standards. What he has heard so far about the as yet untitled film is promising though.

"They're changing the whole thing, the whole dynamic," he says. "I'd be playing Bond's nemesis, yes, but it's not that obvious. Everything is more nuanced. It's very intriguing."

He also said that he's interested in being able to escape into a role, and then go back home to be with his family in the evenings. "But who knows? Maybe I will go back home saying, 'I have the world in my hands,'" Bardem said with a laugh. "Evil can be very seductive."

So is escapism, Javier.

Was just thinking that...and I imagine its the first thought anyone whose seen No Country for Old Men thought of as they read this.

I don't wanna say the man can't be a Bond villain but there is only one image of him as a villain that is burned into my head and its gonna be hard to shake it.

Bond: I need to know what I stand to win.

???: Everything

If you have ever read the James Bond books you would know that Daniel Craig is the most accurate Bond according to the source material. He is also a really good actor.

OT: Javier Bardem is a fantastic actor, he would be a great choice as the next villain. This is actually very exciting because I thought they had ended the Daniel Craig Bond series.

I'm not even a fan of Bond, and I would watch this movie in a heartbeat if this guy was the villain.

I suppose you're right, I never read any of the Bond books. I'm just saying that the classy/reserved Bond is more interesting than the "I'm pissed and comin' at you with a machine gun" Bond. It makes him seem too similar to every other action star in my opinion.

Also, I have nothing against Daniel Craig (on the contrary, I agree, he's a great actor), I just don't like him as James Bond.

Word on the street is that we will also be cast in the part of Roland Deschain in the upcoming Dark Tower films and series.

If by craptacular you mean best, then yes, craptacular indeed.

OT: Sounds good to me - 2012 is so far away though!

Awesome!!

I get the sense they're trying to do something fresh with this installment. I'll take anything over Quantum, that was an abomination of a movie that managed to fuck up in every single way it possibly could, was especially disappointing after Casino Royale turned out to be such a surprisingly good film.

I could do without Craig though...

I think he'll make a perfect Bond Villain the likes of which we haven't seen since the early years of the franchise. I eagerly await to see how this plays out.

I respect that. But Bond is actually written as more of a rugged drunkard with little control over his emotions.

I do agree that there are too many "machine gun wielding" actions stars these days...I just happen to think past Bonds have been a little too suave.

Had I read the books and known that's what he's SUPPOSED to be, I'd probably agree with you. I however grew up with Dalton and Brosnan, so they embody "James Bond" to me.
