Fanboys- at least of this intensity- are so utterly useless, so completely without any redeeming qualities, that they must attach themselves to an outside entity to feel any sense of worth. I love how people complain that reviewers are bought out, and then we have a reviewer actually give their honest opinions and an honest score, he's just trying to be subversive or trolling.

"The reviewer was bought out" = They liked something I didn't!

"The reviewer is trolling" = They didn't like something I did!

The most disturbing thing about this -- besides the fact that someone created a fake screenshot to get Nintendo fans to mob Sterling, of course -- is that a 7/10 is somehow seen as an egregious grade in this industry, which is really fucking sad. You can't even give games something below an 8 without mobs of angry "fans" losing their shit.

Also, it's funny: I know the review excerpt is fake, but I'm reminded of how many ACTUAL reviews I've read over the years that are, content-wise, largely negative in nature and suggest the game is average at best, only to have a 7 or even an 8 numerical score attached to it. It's entirely incongruous; the scores often don't seem to match the reviewers' actual feelings about the game. And seeing the reaction from Nintendo "fans" over this BS, I can see why some folks would be reluctant to score games lower. I doubt that was the intent of whoever created this fake review, but I thought it was interesting nonetheless.

It's a big release Nintendo game, anything less than a 9 would be seen as an outrage by these people. People kicked off when GameSpot gave Twilight Princess an 8.8, it's insanity

Literally how can you get angry about a review you disagree with? I mean, is a guy not allowed to publish his personal impressions of something without first checking if he has the right impressions? If you can't state your actual opinions in your review, what's the point of making it in the first place? At that point you might just copypaste someone elses review that's deemed appropriate

I gotta be honest, me, personally, I love reading reviews and critiques I disagree with. I find it very valuable to engage with viewpoints different from my own and most of the time I can learn from them. I'm eagerly awaiting MovieBobs two hour deconstruction of Batman v Superman, knowing fully well that he'll tear apart a movie I really love. I thought Vampire: Bloodlines was a great game and I thought the negative points Noah Gervais made were perfeftly valid and made me reconsider a lot of things about it.

The reviewers at Scary Ghosts did a joke thing where they will only rate games either a seven or a ten out of ten. Seven has become the industry standard term for "The game is average to shit, but I'm told the studio will stop sending us early review copies if we score it such, so here's the weakest 'positive score' instead." Similarly in boxing, a losing boxer could get knocked down twice in a round and still get a 7/10 on the score cards.

It raises the old question of why reviewers bother with review scores in the first place if only the top four numbers are used.

I mean, the whole episode was hilarious and all but I'd hope people wouldn't be so gullible. Also, who seriously cares about slightly lower than expected review scores? Publishers and developers have a reason for that but for the rest of us that's just dumb.

This is what it's come to. 7/10 isn't even a bad score in reality. If I liked 70% of a game or a film, it would be worthwhile and enjoyable for the most part. There are actually quite a few 7/10s i find criminally underrated. But nowadays it's a scale from 8 to 10. Thanks a lot for never giving any game less than 5,5 for the last decade IGN. Seriously, colonial marines, duke nukem forever, too human.
