John Rhys-Davies Talks Dungeon Siege

In a recent interview with In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale [http://www.gamedaily.com/articles/features/john-rhysdavies-talks-in-the-name-of-the-king/71328/?biz=&page=1].

Rhys-Davies plays Merick, the king's magis, in the film, which also stars Leelee Sobieski [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005458/]. He became involved with the film while waiting for the completion of his house, after hearing about Reynolds' involvement. "The builders have not finished my house and I was going mad and I thought, this could be fun. Who else is in it? Burt's in it? Oh, I'm on. Let's go and see if we can make a success out of this one."

While describing Merick as "not a terribly important character in this piece," he nonetheless said it was a "joy" to be involved with the shoot. "There are none of the grumbling crises that slowly accumulate during the course of a production until you know that are you in production hell," he said. "That's really quite remarkable because this is a big shoot and it's going to take a long time. And that's probably a great tribute to the line producers who are making sure that everything slots into place very well."

Rhys-Davies expresses despair about the current "infatuation" with movies based on videogames, calling it a "disaster" and saying, "If we had good writing, it would not happen," but also claims personal affection for director Uwe Boll [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0093051/]. "I like Uwe very much," he said. "He knows what he wants. He is a remarkable producer. He hasn't fired me yet, and that's always a good thing as far as the actor's concerned."

I agree, he is a remarkably awful producer. And as for it being a good thing that Uwe hasn't fired him yet; does he really thing that being cast in a movie made by a guy who exclusively makes garbage is going to benefit his career in any way?

I don't think he hates videogame movies specifically, I think he hates the creative bankruptcy that seems to have the Hollywood movie industry in a very firm grip. I think you'd get the same response if you asked him about movies based on old tv shows, cartoons, comic books and so forth: It's not the movies he dislikes, it's the state of the industry their existence represents.

And this may come as something of a surprise but John Rhys-Davies has been in a LOT of really shitty movies and tv shows. I think he's pretty well established himself as a guy who will appear in just about anything as long as someone asks him nicely.

You forgot to mention he also seems to show up in any game that will have him, too- Wing Commander 3 and Freelancer just off the top of my head.....
