John Travolta Wants To Be a Bond Villain

John Travolta says he's not going to give up playing bad guys until he gets to be a villain in a James Bond film.

I dig John Travolta's work. Yes, he may threaten to veer into self-parody now and then, but overall the man is a solid talent, particularly when it comes to playing psychos, lunatics and plain old bad dudes. As it turns out, he digs that kind of character and doesn't plan on giving up on them until he's joined the ranks of the baddest of the bad: Bond villains.

He currently has two "tough guy" roles coming up, one of which will see him play mobster John Gotti Sr. in a 2015 biopic, but what he's really aiming for is to be cast in a James Bond movie. "I would love that," he said in an interview with The Telegraph. "They're going a different way with their villain in this next film but I've spoken to Barbara Broccoli about it and she loves the idea, so that would be great." And despite turning 60 very soon, he said he won't "close the chapter on playing villains" until he gets the role he covets.

Barbara Broccoli, as even a casual fan can tell you, is the daughter of famed Bond film producer Albert R. Broccoli and producer herself of the more recent Bond flicks starring Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig, so if Travolta has spoken to her, it's fair to say he's serious about the idea. Could he pull it off? Travolta's characters tend to have rather outsized personalities, so while he may have been a good fit for some of the earlier (and sillier) Bond movies - I'm thinking of a Max Zorin type of guy - I'm not sure he could effectively tone it down enough to pull off something like Le Chiffre or Renard.

But perhaps his advancing years would give Travolta a certain gravitas his previous roles have lacked. I don't know if it would work, but it might be fun to watch him try.

Seriously, don't bother commenting, just look at that movie and tell me he wouldn't make a GREAT Bond Villain!

I can't believe someone ninjad' me on this one.

I just refreshed the page from a earlier thread, see this, think what you said, clicked on the comment section and boom

Also the movie "Basic", althou that's maybe not as much, straightforward, villainy as Swordfish

You know, if we make John Travolta the villain and get Quentin Tarantino as the director (he wanted to do Casino Royale), we could get a really interesting take on the 007 mythos...

But who would take the role of James Bond in that film?

That would be one Bond film I'll never watch then, I'm not going to support a cult if I can help it.

John Travolta'd make a good Bond villain, he does evil roles pretty well.

I vote we get Sean Connery back, I'd watch "007, retirement home adventures".

I see your Swordfish and I raise you a Face/Off. Travolta goes evil AND he has to play it at the same insanity level as Cage.

And he nails it.

So yeah, give the man his Bond Villain role please.

I don't remember much about Swordfish, but in hindsight it's a pretty good example of Travolta being bad while showing some restraint. But Face/Off? Isn't that just full-on crazy time?

I raise you a Battlefield earth

We need more movies where Travolta is the villain....

Indeed it is, I just happen to like his crazy villain more that the restrained one. And I did quite enjoy Swordfish.

That's probably one of the worst movies in the history of... ever. But his parts were kinda cool, yeah.

This needs to happen. Travolta would make a fantastic Bond villain.

Can't quite put my finger on it yet something about his style of acting would fit the serious yet cheesy nature of Bond's enemies. Old style ones anyway. The Craig era Bond villains are a little more.. normal?

I honestly didn't expect this kind of reaction. Travolta as a Bond villain in the Roger Moore era, sure, but as a counter to Daniel Craig? I expected most people to see him as too cartoonish for the job.

That's a great idea. I see Swordfish had already been mentioned. Good, good.
But he's even more awesome as a good bad-ass guy IMO. Have you seen "From Paris With Love"? Great action scenes.

I can see it. Travolta plays baddies much better than goodies. Hopefully we can do away with the god-awful Daniel Craig and get a real Bond instead and have Travolta be the first in the new line of Bond villains.

Curse you for reminding me of that "film."

I would like to see a Travolta villain in the same vein as Pulp Fiction, a gangster type. Nothing campy like a doomsday device or rail-gun rifles, just a powerful criminal syndicate with ambitious plans to take control of more than a black market. That would strike a chord considering whats happening in Mexico.

Alternately, a scheming villain like Swordfish or Basic could work, so long as they're not just rehashing Skyfall. Not that I disliked Skyfall, but I fear that movie executives might stick what "works" after contrasting Skyfall with Quantum of Solace. I'd hate to see the old Bond tropes replaced with "new" tropes.

I definitely don't want to see a hammy villain like Face/Off. Lets not deny that one was just plain cheesy. Not that I'm knocking those who enjoy cheese sometimes. I certainly do. But I don't want to see the Bond franchise fall back into its old habits. Otherwise, the reboot would've been in vain.

And curse you again Maxtro for reminding me of... of that.

I think Travolta would be a good Bond villain, maybe as a Goldfinger type with a "No Mr Bond I expect you to die" angle to the character. I kind of guy that goes "Why DON'T I just shoot him?"

I've got it.

Travolta plays an older, fatter agent of MI6 who is going around the world nonchalantly committing acts of international terrorism with no regards for cover, discretion, bodycount or sanity. He acts over the top, uses silly, nonsensical tools, is weirdly detached from his surroundings and has no regard for human life. Craig has to stop this monster.

Basically so we can get Daniel Craig's James Bond to kill Roger Moores James Bond.

In addition to the other roles mentioned Travolta was an excellent villain in The Punisher. He had class and a cold calculating demeanor about him that hid his sociopathic nature. I think he could pull off an amazing bond villain IF the villain was written well and to Travolta's strengths.

I approve.

Well, that actually makes a lot of sense. After all, while you were still learning to SPELL YOUR NAME, he was being trained to CONQUER GALAXIES!
