Johnny Depp Named Hollywood's Most Overpaid Actor By Forbes

If there was ever a time for Michael Bolton to franchise [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI6CfKcMhjY], it's now.

Johnny Depp seems like an all around swell guy. He's humble despite his success, he stays out of the press for the most part, he even even more unfavorable reviews [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DK7eesKFuKo].

As such, Depp was most recently given the not-so-honorary title of "Hollywood's Most Overpaid Actor" by Forbes magazine [http://variety.com/2015/film/news/johnny-depp-most-overpaid-actor-forbes-1201666516/] as part of their yearly countdown.

The "achievement" tops off a rough couple of years for Depp, who ranked second in Forbes' list in 2014 thanks to his roles in such flops as Transcendence and Tusk. But even with the critically-lauded Whitey Bulger biopic Black Mass underperforming at the box office as well, Depp's upcoming turns in the Alice in Wonderland sequel, Through the Looking Glass and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales (scheduled for 2016 and 2017 releases, respectively), would lead one to believe that he will find himself lower (or hopefully off) the list by this time next year.

The top 10 "most Overpaid Actors" are below, via Forbes:

1. Johnny Depp: $1.20 per $1
2. Denzel Washington: $6.50 per $1
3. Will Ferrell: $6.80 per $1
4. Liam Neeson: $7.80 per $1
5. Will Smith: $8.60 per $1
6. Christian Bale: $9.20 per $1
7. Channing Tatum: $10.80 per $1
8. Brad Pitt: $12.00 per $1
9. Ben Affleck: $12.30 per $1
10. Tom Cruise: $13.60 per $1

When looking at the names and return rates here, it's hard not to see this list as somewhat...exaggerated. Tom Cruise, for instance, only starred in one movie this year -- Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation -- which returned nearly $700 million on a $150 million budget [http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=mi5.htm]. Calling Cruise, or any actor, director, plumber, or barista who returns nearly $14 for every $1 they earn "overpaid" is a bit of a stretch to say the least. Even Denzel Washington, who hasn't starred in a movie since 2014's The Equalizer -- which earned $192 million on just $55 million, by the way -- somehow wound up on this list. So yeah...maybe take this list with a grain of salt.

In any case, it doesn't look like an inclusion here is going to stop Depp from doing what he does best: starring in blockbuster sequels that require him to wear lots and lots of makeup and make even more goofy faces. And who can put a price on that?

Depp's agent, apparently.

I think he will care about the quality of movies, before accepting the role, once his price starts dropping.

yeah, I don't take this list so seriously. I mean, you can put johnny depp in anything, and his presence alone won't make the money, it needs to take into account the quality of the work itself. maybe johnny depp earned every bit of his overpaid salary, the movie just didn't make money because of a poor script, or camera work, or just opening against giants... point being, there's too many variables for this to be taken seriously.

also, Will Smith? yeah, that dude is one of the greatest actors of our time. any money he makes, he deserves. in the context of Hollywood, at least. they're all overpaid monkeys in tuxedos in my opinion.

I think it's fair to point out that while Depp has done more than a fair share of what you describe, his most recent movie, Black Mass, was not eccentric in the least, and was quite successful commercially and critically, even on this website by Marter.

Am I saying he doesn't seem to have the goofy, overly eccentric roles? No, and sometimes they hurt a movie more than help it (see: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Lone Ranger). But he is still a good actor.

Will over Will? Huh... I did not see that coming...

Other than that, 2017?? How BIG is that next movie going to be to take that long to produce???

All actors are highly overpaid. It's ludicrous.

Anyway, what the hell is Channing Tatem doing listed with these actors? Sure he's been in some funny movies, but he's nowhere near being in league with most of these guys.

Black Mass was a commercial failure it lost money regardless of how it did critically which to the studios shareholders is irrelevant.

Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass is my bet for the biggest drop in world wide gross for any sequel ever.

If I had to bet, Channing Tatum's presence on this list has little to do with his acting ability. [http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1915581/?ref_=nm_knf_t4]

OT: Can someone please explain to me why being "overpaid" is a bad thing?
I've never personally met anyone that complained they earned too much money in their job.

Actually, from the information I found, while it wasn't a smash hit, it didn't lose money. According to Hollywood Reporter [http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/box-office-preview-maze-runner-823366] (6th paragraph), Black Mass had a $55 million budget, while according to Box Office Mojo [http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=whiteybulger15.htm], it has made $62 million domestically and $94 million worlwide.

Maybe calling it a success commercially was off. I remembered seeing it open at #2 in the box office, and assumed it made a fair bit more money after that due to how good everyone who saw it said it was. But it wasn't a commercial failure, either.

It's not that they complain about being overpaid, it's that people being overpaid is a waste of money when they aren't making the money back that it costs to hire them. It's throwing away money on someone who doesn't necessarily have to get 100% to what they're doing and paying Johnny Depp a whole lotta money for a movie that isn't good is just a waste, especially for "we're REALLY in debt" America where we're so worried about entertainment that we waste money on overpaying actors instead of things that actually matter.

Also called it. Johnny Depp kinda lost his spark some odd years ago and I can't BELIEVE that they're making ANOTHER Alice movie.

Edit: All this is my opinion and nothing more.

It cost $53 million and only had a world wide gross of $94.5 million but the time the theatre chains take there cut (50%+) the studio lost money.

Is... Is that Johnny Depp as Terry Thomas?
Basically. I'm not much of Johnny Depp person in general, but I actually thought Mortdecai was hilarious. I couldn't believe that the reviews were so bad.

I am sure I am not the only one who avoids a movie if Depp is in it. I have no idea what people see in him. His acting comes across as terribly fake the majority of the time, and really just gives me the creeps in general. Sure, he may be a nice guy but I still do not find him to be a great actor. I was actually looking forward to a few of the movies he had been in until I found out he was in them .. then disappointment set in and never bothered watching the movie because it usually ruins the story for me if I try watching it when I see him act.
