So, I just finished The Walking Dead...

Dang.

Don't get me wrong, it was fantastic, but after that I really need something to cheer me up. I was thinking about trying out Recettear: An Item Shop's Tale or Dust: an Elysian Tail, or maybe Terraria or something...

I'm honestly not sure where to go next. I like virtually all types of games, though I prefer something with a good story if I can find it. So, any ideas?

To the Moon is a nice, upbeat game, and can usually be had for less than $10!

It's super happy!

A game about a dying wish? Hmm...
Don't trust him. At all. >.>

Happy games Minecraft, maybe? Folk Tale is something I like, too - but it's still in Alpha. Lots of potential, though. Very fun comicy take on a village-builder, a mix between Warcraft and Caesar type games.

Go for a Harvest Moon game, too, if you can find one cheap. I like the Wii version - Tree of Tranqulity better than Animal Parade. Or get a Rune Factory, which is Harvest Moon with and RpG built in. Can get some of those cheap. They're very nice and bright and happy and fun.

I played Elysian Tail recently, and I would totally recommend it. It might seem a bit heavy at times but I think it's upbeat overall.

It's a happy ending.

Everything is cutesy, and even though your companion Fidgit sounds like a clone of Navi, I actually found her far more endearing than annoying. Also, it's none too stressful to play, while still being satisfying for it's duration.

I've heard that's fantastic, but I fear I cannot get it. I'm working on PC only :(

PC only? Hmm. Well, I've been playing State of Decay and Project ZOmboid lately... but I dunno if you want more zombies.

Except maybe you should get 400 Days, which is the bridge between season 1 and 2 of the game? ... Is Telltale's Fable out yet?

... Time to go home for the day. Hopefully someone offers a good suggestion that works for you.

That reminds me, how about Fable? As in, Peter Molyneux's Fable? You could probably pick it up for like $10, and it really is a fun game as long as you don't go in expecting an epic adventure. Lighthearted, funny, doesn't require you to think too hard... it's a good game to play to get over the seriousness of something like TWD.

Well, if you want to stay in the same sort of adventure genre and need something to cheer you up, you could do a lot worse than The Secret of Monkey Island. The Special Edition, which runs on current PCs and has (optional!) updated graphics, is on Steam right now for around $10.

Botanicula [http://amanita-design.net/games/botanicula.html]! Just listen to the soundtrack on Amazon [http://www.amazon.com/Botanicula-Soundtrack-DVA/dp/B0080111T0/ref=sr_1_1?s=dmusic&ie=UTF8&sr=1-1&keywords=botanicula] and see for yourself. Also, it's just ten bucks.

Weird, YouTube is down.

I'd like to second this. Though the game feels light on puzzles, I dare you to play it without a big goofy grin plastered on your face the whole time.

I've just started playing this game and I haven't been so crazy about a game in a long time:
SSX Tricky.
I said it.
Such a fucking amazing game.
SSX/10 would recommend.

I thoroughly enjoyed to the moon surprisingly even more so that the walking dead (tighter better story imo) so I would recommend that. Its sorta bitter sweet though.

Out of the ones you mentioned at the top I have just started plating Elysian after getting it on sale on GOG and so far I am pretty impressed. I sorta passed it over because of you know talking animals sorta put me off but damn its already impressed me and Fidget is actually extremely likable at least so far, I find I actually want to hear more of her dialogue.

My initial thought.

Would you really call it uplifting though? It's a fucking good story, and that ending is done so well. One of the many things the game did that few stories have done before is make me feel so happy and sad about an event happening.

I was always happy when Johnny and River had a memorable event together and it was all working out great for them, then you remember that Johnny couldn't remember a lot of the events that happened. The entire story was about fabricating fake memories as a part of making someone feel better.

Another game is Thomas Was Alone. I'm not so sure what type of game it is, I think it's happy. A lot of really memorable moments and really memorable dialogue, all about colored rectangles and platforming.

Lol Reccetear and Dust were the two games that immediately popped into my mind after reading the thread title, I was just unsure if Cutesy is your bag, since Recettear aswel as Carpe Fulgur's other games have it in spades.

You might find Recettear's dungeoning a tad simple if you've played other 2D ARPGs like Zelda or Ys but it's the item shop section that carries the game imo.

Also if you've yet to play a Y's game I'd highly recommend playing one like Y's Origin AFTER Recettear, I pretty much did and could really see the difference in quality between the two in regards to a top down 2D ARPG. Music by Yuzo Koshiro (Streets of Rage / Entrian Odyssey)

As for Dust: An Elysian Tail imo it beats Vanillaware at their own game as it has none of the dire and repetitive level design or Cookery for levelling BS Muramasa or Odin's Sphere has, Aquaria is another "good" Vannilaware clone I'd highly recommend. It rarely ever goes on sale so you might aswell buy it full price.

Bastion is a similar game too, only the character's snail like movement speed lets it down. The old Wonderboy series is worth checking out since the later half of the series is pretty much the progenitor of the 2D sidescroll ARPG / metroidvania Dust is a part of.

Terraria really needs a co-op partner to really shine in the long term, even if I found it very addictive the first week of playing alone.

If you want to get some pay back against those zombies GirlGirl 2 is a freeware sidescroller ARPG / metroidvania but with guns that are as fun to use as a Doom shotgun.
