If you suck at it, just go a medic :)
O_O

Since when is Medic considered the easiest class?
No class is an easy class but Medic is a good starting class as it teaches you to dodge and be aware of what is going on as well as being a relatively invaluable member of the team as a medic is almost always needed.

-I seem to have a piece of paper taped to me saying 'Stab Me' or else I wouldn't be backstabbed worse than Gary 'Roach' Sanderson.
-Same goes for headshots, but replace Roach with Jack Carver.
-I don't have natural talent.

Edit: People keep bringing up how finding a better server should deal with my douchebag problem. Give me a specific name and I'll try it out once I get it installed again. This is the Internet, remember: no pix, no proof.
-I don't have friends to help me get better either.
-Youtube has actually helped me somewhat, sorta kinda...
-Never had the guts to play online...
-So it's true then... Terrific... Just when I thought I was becoming a decent sniper... Practicing on the bots hasn't helped you at all?
-What classes do you typically play as? Because there are some maps where as an engineer, you can deliberately back yourself into a corner and set up sentries, dispensers, and teleporters directly over a health and/or ammo spawning point. Probably bad sportsmanship, but the bots never complained...
-I... I don't know what to tell you here.
-And bots really hasn't helped you improve? Because they taught me to aim before I shoot! (I am not kidding here. I'm a panicky person...)

:D Wanna be my Steam friend? I can take character death with grace and good humor! ...Or at least, I've been able to so far, but like I said, my opponents are bots... I've never been insulted after being killed before.

Check steam for a user named "Blignorance"

If you're still willing to give it a try, I'll give you the basics on the game that you'll want to know and little tips that help you get better. I'm not /that/ good myself but I make a pretty damn dangerous heavy, a decent soldier and a tricky spy.
So how well can you rocket jump? I've reached the ends of my ropes when repetitively failing to do a simple long-rocket jump.

As for medic? Are you kidding? Never have I played an FPS where I've had to manage my positioning to the umpteenth degree, while keeping my team healed, while scouting for spies and other flankers, while ubering with precise timing, while leading the target player of whom I've leashed myself to, while slowly getting better at using the near impossible syringe gun... How the hell is the medic boring?
I actually have a LOT of trouble rocket jumping. I played a lot of jumping maps and they got me to a playable standard, but I still go too high every time... I can get the height but not the length. For now, I find looking backwards while jumping does the trick. "Nooby", but yes...

and I know medic requires quite a bit of skill and all that jazz, and I play it a LOT (just because no-one else wants to) but there's no... moment. Too many times am I flanked by a random enemy from behind and even with mic, they don't help.

For example, once I was healing a demoman as we were pushing the cart but a surprise pyro came up to him and got him. I started running backwards and healed a sniper nearby, but he ran away and the pyro kept chasing after me. Then I healed a spy. Ran away. Then another pyro! RAN AWAY! Then I died.

Medic can be fun but usually with friends. I love going heavy-medic with my buddies, but with strangers, it's painful.
For long rocket jumps it is best not to use direct hit and aim backwards. Same technique for normal one ie crouch jump thing. For distance you aim it aim from you and not directly under you.
If I try to aim backwards, I tend to go off on a tangent and aren't able to go forward

I understand, some prick banned me just because I wouldn't play another class. I think that dude gets off on telling people what to do.

well, I'm not the greatest myself, but I do end up usually with about a 1.0 k/d ratio...
my only good suggestion would be to just try and have fun, regardless of how badly you'll play, and eventually it will come to you. that's how I got better into the game after less then a month of playing...

also, if you're searching for tf2 buddies, just ask. I'm sure most people over here (myself included) would be happy to play with/against fellow escapist's

its a bit crude to say that everyone online is a doucebag.
Teamfortress 2 actually has very few ragetrolls comapred to other shooters (atleast on the PC)
i started playing TF2 before all my friends did. I taught myself, i read the tips in the loading screens, and i got taught a bunch of things from both my mistakes and from other people on the servers.
you have no excuses.

(Use your own discretion, I'm sure you know how to make friends).

Finally you could move to Australia. We don't have as many server's as you guys but most people on there seem fairly nice. Again it's all about picking the right servers and this is something you'll learn with time.
Two things:
-I have never had real friends in my entire life.
-I already live in Australia.
I have no problems with people in the servers I play on. If your having issues, ask. Sometimes you might get lucky and there might be somebody like me on who will help you out for a bit.

There has already been some good advice here about enjoying the little victories. I have been playing for ages but when I started I sucked. I am talking seriously bad. I only put in the time at all because some of my mates played. It took me a few weeks of playing before I even started to enjoy it. A week for a map would end with me getting more than 5 kills, on 2fort, with the solly. So yeah, I sucked. Now however, over 1k hours and I have had some awesome fun.

Edit: also, only play for fun. Don't get competative. It's not worth it. Thats what clans and scrims are for (until you are crazy good you wont even get invited into one).

You know what? Team Fortress 2 has given me more grief than any other game in existence. Why did I spend 20 dollars on it? It was stupid while it lasted. I sucked at it, everyone online hates me, I spent more time dead than alive, all the advice I received was both painfully obvious and completely useless...Fuck this game.

Edit: In terms of people saying 'You hate it because you're bad at the game':

No pix, no proof, really? Ok, first of all, read the wiki, the thing will ANSWER ALLALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS, while watching tutorials, watch what they do, read what they SAY to do, Evil Daedoulus is great for tutorials. Just keep playing, the thing between TF2 and other FPS's is that the game requires SKILL to play.
And for douchebags, keep trying, you'll find one you like eventually.

For reference, try getting into the DotA community, or any of its clones. No one will help you learn the ropes, teh AI is worthless and by the time you figure out how to play, the metagame and way to play has changed.

Roll with it and try to find a local server, with local people, they're usually nicer. Public games are just scum of the earth looking for n00bs to take out and make their k/d ratio higher. assholes.
I will. Send me a message when DOTA 2 hits and I will teach you the game from the ground up. Same goes to anyone else.

Making judgements based on a few experiences doesn't give you a perspective on the entire playerbase.
Thanks for the offer, but I played way back in the v5.6 till about v6.2 days. I've got probably 300+ hours in DotA on the Garena servers, playing mostly Aussies (That's were I live), back then. Event then, the community was bad, and you were expected to play each character a certain way with certain items or you'd get deserted to die, then accused of feeding and booted. I tried about 3 months ago to get back into DotA, only to find out the community is worse than ever.

Haha, oh god never judge a whole game based on one server. I was on a server the other day I played regularly and when two of my friends were greeting each other, someone else said something. They then complained that he had "ruined the moment" and he was promptly kicked by an admin with the reason of "ruining the moment". Don't get me wrong it was hilarious but I'm just pointing out some people are just mean haha. <- I wasn't apart of it just witnessed it, but funny in a "at least it didnt happen to me" way.

Captcha: nice job

Why thank you : )

Edit: Thanks so much for being nice, guys. I came out of this with a few things learned, a stronger resolve to get good enough to really enjoy this game and about ten more friends on Steam and here. You're really wonderful.
Do a server search for 'noob' and 'beginner'

I have pretty much been exclusively playing the fragmasters.co.uk beginners servers and folk there have been really nice (though the occasional pro hops on to dominate and kinda kill the fun) hardly ever seen any trouble. Maybe check them out? Not sure how your latency will be on a UK server but I tend to not have much trouble on the US servers.

Lastly: if you're not feeling confident and just want to practice to get better, join a server with a lot of players. There are a lot of 30-33 player servers and these allow you to just play without standing out so you can get better.

You've already been given plenty of advice, but two things I can tell you that really helps in FPSes and will help you be a better player:

1) Always be moving around. This makes you a harder target, and increases your survivability.

2) Almost always be looking around like a madman in all directions. If you always just run along looking straight ahead and never bother to check your flanks then you'll die alot (and get backstabbed by spies a lot, though looking around doesn't help too much with that one)

You may think you're already doing these two things, but take a look at a video of someone playing a big name FPS and you'll see that they're moving around like crazy all the time.

BTW, if you ever want to play, my name on Steam is ChickenBandit. I'm pretty good at Pyro, Heavy, Demoman, Engineer, Medic, and Spy so I can be whatever you need me to be if we play together. Also, my clan has some servers you can play on that are pretty laid back, but unfortunately they're usually full.

It's been said elsewhere in this thread but it bears repeating: PLAY MEDIC. In addition to performing the single most important job in the game you'll also be able to watch players who are better than you while healing them. It's neat, really. Play medic long enough and you learn other classes and tactics just by proxy.

So just go out there and have fun :3 It's about the best online FPS out there...it's just got a very poor community.
Thankyou for your post, I've just started playing (yes, since it went F2P, I'm cheap so shoot me...in -game of course :p) and have found that some servers are full of elitist jerks, but for the most part people have been welcoming. Probably doesn't hurt that I'm boosting their stats every time they manage to cap me :p

Well, I have no idea what you were banned for, but I got banned from my favourite six or seven servers (all run by the local cable company), when there was that glitch that let you build multiple engineer buildings: I had hotkeyed it to my normal "explode" button on a less serious server, then accidentally hit it (while playing Scout, no less), and BOOM! Insta-ban.
