So i managed to find a few and sparse mentions to this game on the forum but no topic dedicated to it, So i decided to create one myself, so that fans might discuss their experiences and even have so people discover the game and become fans themselves.
So, for those reading that haven't heard of or played this wonderful game, Kana Little Sister is
japanese Bishoujo/Hentai Visual Novel. The game is played reading text with some amazing images on the background and some great music playing you along. You take the role of Takamichi Todo, a
young Japanese boy who is dealing with feelings for his little sister, Kana. Kana is sick since she was very little, and when was young Taka was quite mean to her, believing that she was taking their parents away from her. After his actions go too, Taka is lead to see how much Kana suffers and they become very close.
Now, this game contains incestous themes, and is Hentai, meaning that it contains Anime-styled
pornography. As such, it is not for everyone out there and sure not for those who are younger than 18 years old.
Now, i found this game throught a forum in gamefaqs.com, a top 10 list actually. i was interestedand immediately went to get the game. And it was simply amazing. Seeing Kana in the hospital suffering because of her illness and her lack of friends was heart-breaking, and most of the endings were quite sad, even Ending 1, which is marked as the best ending. All characters are extremely well-done and complex, especially Kana, Yumi, Sumako, Taka and even little Cana. This was the first game that made me cry and i am not ashamed to admit it. Kana Little Sister is truly emotionally involving, as well as thought-provoking.
This where the topic might veer into spoilers, so for those who haven't played, i suggest you stop here and return after you have completed the game.
The downside that i think there might be to this game is the contrived plot twist that absolves that Taka and Kana from their supposely incestous relationship. It is revealed that Kana is actually adopted and thus their relationship isn't really incestous because they are not blood-related. Now, there might a little less stigma now and if Kana lives and had continued their relationship and married, their hypothetical children wouldn't suffer from some congenital disease, but beyond that, i am the only one that feels it still incestuous because they grow up as brother and sister and still think of each other that way even after the revealation?
Also, about the adoption revealation, i kind of feel a element of japanese culture here, in that, at least some decades ago and possibly up until now, an adopted child is seen as someone that poisons and steals the family name. Now i wouldn't say that it gets that extremes with Todos, but what they tell Taka in the scene where they learn that Kana is very close to dying seems to indicate that they care a lot more about Taka, their legimate son, than Kana.
I fell it is quite depressing that in almost every ending except 5 and 6, in hind sight, little Cana will eventually die offscreen because either Kana lives or it wasn't stated that Kana donated her liver to Cana. Really like the whole " i had a sister " epilogue in that matter.
I would really to see what happens to Cana if she lives, see Taka's relationship with his sweet
cousin who has lost her mother and who has a part of his late little sister inside her.
I would also like to introduce you to some great Kana Little Sister Fanfiction i have encountered recently. Here it goes:
http://kana.darklingnet.com/index.htm - Darkling has written some very insteresting stories that follow up Ending 1. We get to see Taka and Kana reunite and then be brought apart for a time by a tragedy. And see why they need each other.
http://www.the-z-projects.com/kana/ - A flash version of My Sister, My Strenght. It translated very well to this format. Only images and music from the game, both from the original Kana Little Sister and the up until now japanese-only Kana Okaeri, were used. Chapter 7 in particular seems to have been made for this format.
http://www.the-z-projects.com/eternity/ - Zero's Flash version of his brother J-Pop4 fanfic Kana: Eternity. this is set in a different time-line from My Sister, My Strenght, just that you don't get confused. The work on the Flash is wonderful on this one, with easter eggs in every chapter and even choiches and different endings in the final chapter.
Only is that barely see fanfics based on endings other than Ending 1. Like i said, would love to a follow-up of Ending 6 and the " i had a sister " storyline. I guess should write it myself then.
Now it is yout turn. Tell what you Kana fans think of the game.
