Ken Levine to Write Logan's Run Screenplay

The creator of Bioshock will make his mark on the remake of 1970s classic.

Ken Levine, creator of Irrational Games' Bioshock franchise, has been tapped by Warner Bros. to pen the screenplay for its remake of the classic sci-fi film Logan's Run. For the un-initiated, the original film, released in 1976 and based off of a 1967 novel by the same name, takes place in a dystopian society where everyone is subjected to mandatory executions at age thirty to control the population. If its title didn't fill you in, the film follows the titular Logan (played by Michael York) and his exploits as he tries to flee his turn at the headsman's block.

While Levine's involvement in the film might seem a bit odd to fans who only know him from his work in videogames, he actually started out as a screenwriter before working in the games industry. He will, of course, maintain his role at Irrational Games while he writes Logan's Run. Levine himself will be the latest of several creative minds to try and make their mark on the film. Warner Bros. has been working for some time to put this remake together and, in the past, it has been handled by the likes of X-Men director Bryan Singer and, most recently, Nicolas Winding Refn, the filmmaker behind Drive.

How Levine's influence will shape the film will have to be seen. That said, something tells us he'll be a good fit for the project. Somehow we can just see him doing well with the whole "lone outcast fighting against an extreme dystopian society" shtick.

Wow, I thought I'd never see the day. Logan's run remake. It's doable. A decent story to say the least. I still recall the special effects; the way the guns fired. I'm sure they'll add some new spin to the tale keeping it the same won't "wow" the current generation. That's the thing with remakes; gotta take the old and revive it. As much as I'd like them to keep it the same things change. For the better or the worse. Some films do great with a bit of polish. The story is there, but they lacked to means to fully manifest the artistic vision at that time. God speed is all I can say, and good luck.

Logan's Run... I remember playing a drinking game to that movie, but I really don't recall how we did it considering we got smashed. At any rate it was such an old school movie that a revival now would be interesting to see how they pull it off.

Logan's Run is one of my favorites from that era, along with Rollerball and Death Race 2000 and others. Too often they add all the polish and forget what it is they are polishing. As much as I enjoyed their take on Starship Troopers, it still galls me that they turned it into a parody of itself. Don't get me started on things like I, Robot...

I wish they'd sometimes leave well enough alone and just make new things, like District 9, and stop trying to remake everything. Still, I think Logan's Run might be a good choice for a remake, if they can give me the spirit of the times while updating the visuals. Here's hoping!

I just hope Levine (and whoever directs) doesn't go the "dark and gritty" route. I'm getting sick of the brooding, Dark Knight-esque atmosphere in film.

I went to Carousel a long time ago. I'm uncertain, are they remaking the film, or making a film of the book? There are significant differences. If it is a remake of the film the only thing that may benefit is a less dodgy Box. Otherwise the film stands up just fine. I first saw this in a double feature with Soylent Green, that was a good pairing.

The original was a good campy movie, with some very nice bewbage. It was pretty much like an extended Twilight Zone episode.

A modern remake will probably involve some heavy handed social satire, gratuitous orgy scenes and raves a la Zion from the Matrix films to showcase how awesome it is to be in a world full of only young beautiful people.

It will probably have a Gattaca vibe, what with the forced eugenics/euthanasia, and lose all of the naive campy charm of the original.

It would be like doing a remake of Krull, The Neverending Story, or Labyrinth. Sure you would get a few people interested in it, but I fail to see how any of today's directors could vastly improve upon the originals.

Krull? Nagger u srs? Both Labyrinth and The Neverending Story are packed with good stuff, whereas Krull is just charmingly awful. I don't think it'd be hard to improve on it at all - an inebriated oragutang could write a better screenplay by randomly smashing a keyboard.
