Kick Ass Director to Make X-Men: First Class

Hopping from one Marvel property to another, Kick Ass [http://www.amazon.com/Kick-Ass-Two-Disc-Blu-ray-Combo-Digital/dp/B002ZG9846/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1278523064&sr=1-1] director Matthew Vaughn is to direct the upcoming X-Men spin-off movie, First Class.

Matthew Vaughn, director of "realistic" superhero movie Kick Ass has been confirmed as the director of the next movie in the X-Men series, X-Men: First Class, which is scheduled for release June 3rd 2011 and will be the third Marvel movie coming in summer next year.

As good as the X-Men movies were - the first two anyway - they featured the X-Men mostly as adults, confident in their powers and already a close-knit team. X-Men: First Class goes and fills in the blanks, charting the early years of the Xavier Institute, and focuses on a young Jean Grey and Scott Summers, and is generally more in tune with the early X-Men comics

Having recently seen Kick Ass, Vaughn seems like a good choice. Making young superheroes seem real is no small feat, so getting someone who has already done it is a pretty good idea and it will be interesting to see what happens when he gets his hands on actual superpowers.

The lack of Wolverine could damage the film a bit.

I don't think Cyclops is very interesting, Jean Gray is...But only because of the pheonix side of her.

Wellll.....it'll just have to be a very different kind of film.

A 'coming of age' movie gives the opportunity to show Scott as he comes to terms with his new destructive powers. Jean accidentally smashing stuff with her mind everytime she throws an obligatory teenage hissy fit can fit in to that fairly comfortably too.

I just hope they don't go for the FAR too obvious 'bad guys threaten world, teachers tell kids they're too young to help, teachers mess up and get saved by kids. Oh and for some arbitrary reason the kids fall in love' angle.

Which, if Michael Bay has anything to do with it, probably is the general synopsis...

This has the slight possibility of being good. I personally though Kick Ass was the best super hero movie since the Dark Knight (but still not as good as The Incredibles).

I wonder how good it would have been with out the blood, gore and a young girl kicking arse though. Still good I suppose, there's a good change of some decent and clever action scenes at least (the night goggle and flashing light scene in Kick-Ass is easily the best action sequence since the beginning of Casino Royal)

Funny, Wolverine on his own was a much better comic compared to his stint in the X-Men, but in the films he sucked solo and was much better in the team.

Personally though, Cyclops was always my favorite of the X-Men, with Colossus and Gambit as a close second and third. Shame they never really included them beyond bit parts.

I actually really liked Wolverine's Origins film (although I'm aware I'm probably the only one) - the only X-Men film I like is the first.

When will Iron Man appear? Probably never. Fox has the rights to the X-men characters while Marvel's personal studio turned out Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk which means the X-men and the Avengers exist in separate universes (until the rights go back to Marvel... which will probably be never...)

Ironically, Wolverine is the character I find to be the most one dimensional and the least interesting.

Okay this is cool, I like that they are linking up Wolverine Origins and First Class. However, what I really can't wait for are Wolverine 2, Deadpool and Magneto (all origins movies). I think those will be a lot more interesting. As the Deadpool will more likely hopefully be about classic Deadpool (not that fucked up thing from the movie with the hand swords and the lasers).

I didn't like Cyclops as a character in the X-men movies, however they killed him off in Xmen 3 so fast that it was hard to get to know him. Why would you kill off a character that could shoot lasers from his eyes?
I really hope that Gambit is going to be in the movie. I also really really hope that the Juggernaught is going to be in it. And in a proper role too. Considering that he is Prof X's half brother and what not, they didn't react at all to each other the one time they're pass right next to each other.

Well a change of pace for the X-Men movie series would be nice. To me all of them failed and really didn't touch themes that would be so easy to put on screen.

Brian Singer is producing and Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Stardust, Kickass) are on board. The movie could star Magik, Multiple Man, Rictor and Longshot; and I'd still watch it.

Those guys have worked on damn fine flicks recently (even Valkyrie was surprisingly good. Tom Cruise and all) and that's all I need to know.
