O.O

Honestly, I'm disgusted with how obsessed parents are with kid safety these days. This isn't the only place I've heard of where parents are limiting kids from having fun. On the radio the other day I heard a dad who was describing a school that sent out a letter to all parents because two kids were arm wrestling. Not violent fighting or anything, just who can wrestle their opponent's arm down. I also heard about a summer camp for kids where they've banned ball tag.

Ugh.

So, do you people have opinions on how kids are overprotected these days? Oh sure, supervision is important depending on how long you leave kids out to play but they need to learn to fend for themselves.

Your thoughts Escapist?

I remember when my elementary school banned tag. My group of friends ended up just sitting on a bench, and then they got mad at us for sitting on the bench becuase we weren't running around...

It really is one of those things that you can only just gawk at and wonder about the stability of the people who want to pad their children's lives.

The over protectiveness of parents these days is sickening. Getting scraped up a bit is a part of growing up as a kid. By the sounds of things they're going to want to ban sports in school.

Banning tag? Tag, the game EVERY, SINGLE, CHILD, plays at one point in their lives? Really?

I have no words.

when I was in elementary school we got a brand new kiddy zip line it was about 5 feet off the ground. covered in plastic and featured a foam base for total safety.

First damn day they let us use it some kid falls off and starts crying, they shut it down and disassembled the whole damn thing. rather than get sued.

The problem isn't coddling kids, that's just a symptom, the problem is an overly litigious society, people who will sue at the drop of a hat for the most minor of slights.

That almost as dumb as banning the use of the word "Christmas" in schools. Oh wait...

We are over protected. For example if you return covered in mud from a day of play your parents can be arrested for child neglect. The same goes for spankings and even getting yelling at your child for doing something wrong too loud. I think it's just retarded.

Well if people want there children to grow up to be 'pussy ass idiots who will cry at a papercut and get sick from a door handle' then that's fine for them.
I know if i have kids i'll want to be runnin around and fighting, it's just fun, that's what kids need fun. beacause when they grow up they'll find the world is severely lacking in 'fun'.

Heh, old news. I haven't been able to play tag since second grade. It's sad how when one person gets hurt/does something stupid, it's ruined for the rest of us.

So on top of California parent's attempt to ban the Dictionary we have Florida residents trying to ban outdoor play. I think we have 2 states to force into the sea now. Pull Disney World and Universal up to Georgia and let the land sink.

Seriously? Kids playing together outdoors is one of the best ways to build social skills, boost their immune systems and just enjoy themselves. As long as the parents are responsible and attentive (shocking idea, I know) and teach their kids the old standbys of "look both ways", "don't talk to strangers" they will be fine. Everyone is far, far to wary of implausible dangers and coddling you child will not help.

Thats it, I'm getting off my lazy ass and I'm going outside. THATS RIGHT! HERE I COME WORLD! I'm going to rationally explain that when we were all kids we all played outside. And while some of us prefer the indoors....that doesn't change the fact that everyone has played out side at one point in their life.

I haven't heard of the CA dictionary thing. I live there and while it wouldn't surprise me, do you have a link or something?

Right, I forgot the immune system thing. Where I live kids aren't allowed to go out now without mosquito netting. Sure West Nile is a nasty thing but making them sweat in heavy netting for their "safety" seems stupid to me.

My parents did it right. They let me learn what not to do, were there when I needed help or advice and let me GROW ON MY OWN with friends out in the field.

Schools have started taking down the classic play structures that we all loved so much and are replacing them with lousy plastic "safe" structures. Gone are the big slides of old.

Being a kid now must suck.

Don't blame schools for banning fun. Blame over-protective parent that sue people for looking at their child the wrong way for making the schools ban fun.

The only thing I have to say is this, well the parents shouldn't let there kids run in a parking lot.

"They came in and rented (a home) in a community that does not have a playground and is not conducive to children. Then they expect the children to play in the driveways and parking lot.

I mean come on that's kinda bad to let a kid lose where cars have little view for a tiny person popping out of no where

Well their state cops do use the picture of pedo bear on cars (which a lot of people have as a joke) as a way to id pedophiles.
