Clearly two very sick little people, glad they've been caught and my condolences to the family of that poor girl if they ever see this post.

If that one kid says he had fantasising about murder since he was young I think the best thing would be for him to be put down since he is clearly a threat to the general public if he is ever released and is a drain on resources if he isn't.

For the record, writing an article about the rape and murder of a young girl, and then spending half of it crying about how one news outlet tried to lay the blame on video games is just as disrespectful, and downright stupid as the news outlet in question. Have some fucking class.
Thank you. +20.

I don't mind that one or two of these kinds of articles are upset about the links. But EVERY SINGLE ARTICLE is derailed into complaining about how VERY BADLY gamers are treated by the mainstream media.

That goes in a separate article, on its own. "Killers Confess in WoW" is one article. "Mainstream Media have Bias against Games" is an entirely different article. One that I am quite frankly bored of, because you are preaching to the choir.
Firstly, don't encourage the troll.

Secondly, this isn't about "preaching to the choir". It's about educating the choir to a news source that said choir might want to start avoiding. With gaming becoming more and more prevalent, a news media needs to be careful about demonizing what will very quickly become their target audience. If we keep quiet about news sources that demonize gaming (especially when there's no evidence to support said demonizing), then how will we know when a new source should be avoided?
Troll has a point. I'm getting seriously annoyed by the tortuous justifications of gaming that accompany every tragic event that was linked to games. As the Escapist as a whole likes it though, I should probs be ignored.

I think the shallow angle on a serious story is disrespectful. I'm not about to insist that that means the article as a whole was useless though, or that none of the articles on here are good.

And I just noticed that your profile lists your occupation as "rapist," your interests as "rape" and your bio as "raper."

I think we're done here.
I laughed, hard. Well played.

OT: When you hear the quotes from the two boys who did it...you just know that there's something wrong with their minds.

Hardly a shallow angle. They set the serious part to one side, then guess what? This is a gaming website, so they grab the gaming part, and talk about that for a bit. Otherwise this wouldn't have been posted, this isn't channel 4 news...

The thing that gets me here is the fact that you guys are FEEDING AN OBVIOUS TROLL!
Come on guys!

This "link between gaming and violence" is identical to the links to movies and music, in that it's merely a scapegoat to stop people recognising the violent nature of some people on the planet. It's a lot easier to blame some form of media than face up to the fact that these "monsters" are amoung us. It's a lot less frightening to say "WoW made them do it" or "Marilyn Manson told them to do it."

Except that I'm not a troll, sure.

They already talked about the gaming link, the entire thing was linked to gaming because they confessed to it on WoW. They didn't need to include the rest. That's my opinion. You think they did need to include the rest. It's unlikely we're going to end up agreeing.

This is a trend that causes me annoyance, and like I said, I can see that most Escapists like the repeated defences of games, so I'm not going to contest it. Take the patronising tone off, though. I am aware of a gaming interest slant to the news stories. Opinion and discussion goes outside the news, though, and definitely outside sensitive news stories. Or it should, in my book. Different strokes.

Ah, so making a stupid joke on my profile disqualifies me as a human being. Your professionalism is extraordinary.

This is what's called a fallacious argument, and you've just proven yourself to be the troll in the situation. You want to discredit what I'm saying, but you can't, so you attempt to discredit me instead. Nicely done. Oh, wait. No, it isn't. You're a buffoon.
So you want to be taken seriously, and at the same time you're making tasteless jokes about the subject. Conclusion: Either you are a troll in his death throes; or you are a complete idiot. I'll let you decide which you would rather be, cause I honestly don't care.

While I can see how the article seems to shift gears out of the blue, at the same time everything in the article is within context. Perhaps it would have been less jarring if the header was something like "Murder confessed through WoW, media blames the game." Over-all though, it would seem redundant to have posted them in two different articles since it would have made the one taking about the rape too short, and the one talking about the news coverage would have had to refer back to the first one anyway.

Except that I wasn't doing them at the same time. I made that joke months ago (stupid though it may be), and it can only be seen from my profile. I never made that joke while discussing this topic, and would never be so insensitive to do so. This is like me saying that you're argument is invalid because last year you said you would like to have sex with a girl. It has nothing to do with anything.

Of course not. So why do headlines make a point of mentioning that they were gamers? Why not call them avid television watchers? Why not say their love of action movies made it hard for them to distinguish fantasy from reality?

never actually played world of warcraft but im pretty sure it doesnt involving raping and then killing people? and i was under the impression that the "games cause killers" argument was that games acted like murder trainers......doesnt really hold up to this game does it?

You know, I don't disagree with you. I just disagree with the way that you presented it.

They will be out before 15 years, I really hope the other prisoners get to them. I hate people that kill and rape so very much. It also depresses me to be evil in video games.

Once again, we see that criminals, despite their depiction in cop shows, are generally as stupid as they are despicable.

We also see that the media continues to be as sensationalistic and uninterested in actual facts as they were in the 80s when they claimed Dungeons & Dragons would make you a Satanist. Reporters are notoriously lazy and unwilling to investigate anything that doesn't support their desired narrative. Give them a chance to start a moral panic and they salivate like Pavlov's dog hearing a bell.

Condolences to the family of that girl, and congrats to the authorities for trying these sociopaths as adults.

I knew Kim. I'm good friends with her brother and I know that this whole thing has been really hard on their family. The fact that the news is using WoW as a reason isn't anything new, but I really think that people shouldn't be worrying about the effect on videogames.

I was watching the news about it yesterday and apparently the courts were deliberating about whether to try the f**kers who did it as adults or as juveniles.
As far as everyone that knew Kim is concerned, they should be locked away and be left to rot.

Kim died for a no reason at all and everyone that knew her will miss her dearly.
