Killzone: Mercenary File Size Jumps to 4.5GB With Day One Patch

An 1190MB stability patch will increase Killzone: Mercenary's total file size to about 4.5GB.

Killzone: Mercenary has arguably been sold as something of a <a href=http://www.mcvuk.com/news/read/sony-killzone-mercenary-will-fill-quality-fps-void/0120527>game changer for the Vita. Consistently touted as a premier on-the-go shooter it's probably one the most anticipated releases coming to Sony's handheld in the near future. That being the case, gamers planning to buy the game digitally may want to reconsider a physical retail copy depending on the size of their memory card.

While Killzone: Mercenary was going to be a large game to begin with (3.3GB), it's been revealed that the game will be receiving a day one stability patch that that will push the its file size up to around 4.5GB total. That, of course, would completely consume a 4GB memory card(and then some)and eat a sizable chunk out of an 8GB card. The patch itself will supposedly add in "general stability fixes and performance optimizations" that should help Mercenary run a bit more smoothly when it launches.

Despite the obvious benefits of a well running game, this patch is nonetheless a reminder of why buying one of the handheld's larger memory cards is kind of imperative if you intend to do anything digital on the platform. That being the case, investing in something as expensive as the Vita's 32GB ($79.99) card is probably still a hard pill to swallow, even after <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/127038-Sony-Confirms-Vita-Price-Cut>recent price cuts made the handheld and Sony's proprietary memory cards more affordable.

Doesn't the Vita's game cards have internal memory themselves?, I mean, will it still be necessary to have a memory card to download this patch, even if someone bought the physical copy of the game in retail?

Physical it is. And even then, not before I get my 32GB card. That patch is the size of two indie games, for fuck's sake!

I'm pretty sure you'd have to download the patch onto the memory card, so you'd still lose 1.2GB.

I get my game physical anyways, unless digital is the only means. Thank god I got a 32gb stick for cheap thanks to some good snooping around.

Regardless though, that it awfully big for a patch; I would have figured somewhere around to 400-600mb range. I knew there would be a day one patch and all, I mean....when you have a mulitplayer beta that is sort of a given. I'm just curious as to what changes (or even additions) the patch notes have, or if this is just really crappy compression....

Beta was great, can't wait to get my hands on the game itself next week. It's truly both an incredibly fun game from what I've played, and a technical marvel. Hoping the game gets DLC maps or something post release to give the game added longevity too.

80 dollars for a 32gb memory card? I can buy a god damn 1tb external hard drive for cheaper than that.

Is this flash memory or are Vita users really okay with bein fucked over horribly by Sony like that?

Also, day 1 patches for console games, especially a handheld game? I guess that whole "easier to use than a pc" argument has died a sad pathetic death at this point.

Can you imagine a tiny, delicate spinning disk being taken in and out of the console at will with no impact? It's flash.

Even so, that's extremely expensive for flash. I can get a 32 GB flash USB stick for $20.

They could have allowed Micro SD or even their own Sony Memory Stick M2 format to work, but nooooo. They had to get their users to bend over and take a good ploughing right up the tale end!

God damn I'm regretting my 16gb card now. I wanted the 32 but the store was out of stock and my impatience got the better of me. Oh well I can always uninstall Gravity Rush I guess. Definitely getting the physical copy of this game though.

A patch that is roughly 1/3 of the size of the game? Talk about inefficient programming! What are there over 500,000 lines of comments in the code?!?
