At first, I was afraid the the second game wouldn't live up to the first game, but after playing through the second one, I find that it's better than the first game. The new AI Director really does change up the gameplay enough that each map feels almost new each time you play. I play Realism and have a friggin blast every time I play.

While I find Left4Dead 2 a HUGE improvement on the first one, I understand where your coming from. It is just, L4D2 is too big too be an expansion. Think about it, they wouldn't make as much profit if they released it as DL. Think about it. Chargers, Spitters, Jockeys, new levels, more places, that would be bad planning to do it.

I guess I like it. Like yatzee said, the new stuff at least allowed me to enjoy the gameplay for while again. But you are right, you have the same core gameplay mechanics. However, one comparison is the Half Life series, which uses the same core gameplay mechanics for most of its ga-cough, episodes. Or did I just step onto hallowed ground?
But the half-life series has interconnecting narrative, a continuous story, and generally likeable characters, while L4D2 doesn't share any of that with L4D (except the same apocalypse, but still.
I guess I did step on hallowed ground a bit there. But your point still stands. However, valve is releasing a DLC that should remedy the story problem. Also, Ellis is funny, athough I would agree that the characters from the first game have more personality, if only because I have been playing with them longer.

Left 4 Dead 2 has much better pacing than the original. The levels feel far more distinct. Considering I got it for $35 on Black Friday, that seems pretty fair to me. No way in hell would I pay full price, but it's nevertheless a good game. My favorite multiplayer (shooter) game at the moment.

You misunderstand me, as I sounded a bit offended in my post. I was saying that while yes L4D does have likeable characters, they aren't carried over, and are there just as a vessel for the player and as an added extra to gameplay. So for a good L4D sequel they would have to add significantly to gameplay or add the interconnecting narrative, a continuous story, and generally likeable characters (which are continued and for the story not just there for the player to be).

left for dead one, is an adaption of a mod already done for the original half life, valve just took the whole idea and executed it better, oh and put a price tag on it, they did the same exact thing with team fortress, day of defeat and guess what else Counter-fucking_strike that of course if you didnt know that already. come to think of it the only original idea valve came up with in recent years was Portal. i am not saying the rest was bad i am just saying they know how to make games, even when the ideas arent theirs. i didnt play the first l4d on the xbox because i prefer to play shooters on the PC with a mouse that cant pinpoint the head in 0.314 second.

and just to mention halo, i think halo's death-matches are the best fun i ever had. storywise not much, single player definitely not at all ... games can be shit at something and very good at something else, i didnt like fallout but i loved borderlands Why? the same reason i loved Deus Ex and hated Stalker or oblivion or mass effect. its a game that knows how to keep the flow of the game going, look how Bioshock sucked you in the game and how mass effect doesnt, i want to play along a story but i dont want to get bored to death listening to dialogue instead of playing it in game. yaknow what i am saying

Trust me when I say that the full game is MUCH MUCH better than the original. More varied and different too.

Thinking that L4D2 is the same game as L4D because it uses similar elements is like thinking that Monet and Picasso painted the same painting because they used similar colors.

The strength of a game, especially a VALVe game, should not be measured by the size the arsenal you are given or the rogues gallery you face but by the overall effect and player experience that those elements create.

L4D created an interesting and intense player experience in a very simple way, L4D2 has created a similar but much more varied experience: The three new infected have all curbed the usefulness of play styles popular in L4D, the new melee weapons offer an interesting trade-off to L4D's pistols offering you a higher rate of survival against hordes at the cost of range, and the new crescendo and finale types help to mix up the level designs from L4D.

The absolute worst thing you can say about L4D2 is that it should have been an expansion to L4D in every other respect it is a much more refined and interesting product.

I never got the first left for dead on the 360, instead a cheap cut down PC version that runs sloppy.
Don't worry everyone! It's just a troll!

Dude, everyone thinks I was bashing PC gaming when I said that. If yall paid attention to what I was saying, you woulda heard me explain that my laptop isnt good for games with those kinds of graphics and that the copy of the game I got was a download and it didnt run well.

While I am enjoying L4D2, I still rate the first far better.

The characters are dull in the second, even if the first were stereotypical; the second were just meh.
The swearing, cussing and general feel. Nick's obsession with ass-sticking and the sheer "shit" storm made them seem like they'd forgotten to use any other word.
The bots are as dumb as planks, and still have no idea on how to use special weapons.
Paddles? So you're EXPECTING someone to die and you're already preparing for it...
The new special infected are a blast in versus, but dull in normal games.
As for the scenery...it's nice, but it's like walking through your house in the dark. You get trapped somewhere VERY painful.
The achievements are set to actually work against the game (I've mentioned the Paddles before but again, saving up special items purely to get achievements? (Moustachio))
Speaking of Clowns...where were they? I at least expected a Clown Tank or a Big Top finish.
The new models are nice...but they're just nice.

Going back to 1, I sort of miss melee weapons, but I enjoy it more.
