Garcetti has promised to move over 100 million dollars of the budget going to the LAPD to invest in communities of color. This sounds good on paper, when devoid of context.
LA spends over half it's budget on the police department, with a sizable chunk going to pay out abuse claims, which have risen over the years because of course they have. People have very accurately pointed out that the gap between the police department's funding and the money that goes to the kind of preparedness programs that would lessen the effect of the ongoing pandemic is staggering.
