Sure, it ain't as mainstream as it was during... say the '77 era, but it's still alive and kicking, you just need to know where to look...

The Hold Steady do some great throwback Rock and Roll

Also Steven VanZandt's Coolest Songs in the World compilations are great old fashioned rock from newer bands.

I'm very surprised no one has said anything about Tenacious D
They kinda made fun of rock, and I love them

Paramour would be an obvious suggestion, though considering how popular they've become lately, you might have considered them already.

Steal my ideas!

How about Automatic [http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=gfzc9z1JIxA] Loveletter [http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=otqF1TOpG_M] if you're looking for something that's a bit unknown.

I don't know if they're still making albums but they're definitely still touring.

Anybody got any good Ska?
the only one i know is Street Manifesto, Love them.
Ok, if you want 2tone ska, try madness, specials, skatalites

for 3rd wave stuff, less than jake, reel big fish, capdown (ska wars is a great song!), spunge, fandangle

For ska - like bands, try Adequate Seven, King Prawn and Random hand. Not sure how easy it is to obtain these abroad mind.

Try this awesome thing [www.musicovery.com], probably not the most usefull site on the internet but it certainly looks cool and innovates.

Also, the thing that annoys be most about chart music isnt the style but rather the lack of meaning, i love songs that mean something, which is why Tool kick ass.

Funny how every time a new generation comes a long the kids love it but the parents sit back and say 'Whats is this crap you kids are listening too? Back in my day we had REAL music!'

It happened with Rock'n'Roll, punk, heavy metal, rap, pop, grunge and so on.

Whilst the "Dead Kennedys" still tour, they're really not the same band anylonger, they kicked their lead singer (Jello Biafra) after the first breakup, and has since "sold out" to the extreme, employing lawsuits (the lawsuit concerned the fact that the "new" kennedys wanted to use the "Holiday in Cambodia" song for a Levi's commercial, a company known to use sweatshop labor) and signig to huge corporate labels (including Coca-Cola), completley going against everything that the "original" Dead Kennedys stood for.

Very sad story, they used to make such awesome music, perfect lyrics, awesome message... R.I.P

Some bands I think have a similar sound to "classic rock":

Queens Of The Stone Age - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5ivZ-4DmPY
The Strokes - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LFSYf-sgBIw
Arctic Monkeys - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=30w8DyEJ__0
Jet - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7HkXI70t88&feature=related

That's pretty much what immediately comes to mind. Those might not be the best songs by each band, but if you browse around you should find plenty of good stuff by all of them. You might've even heard of them all, no idea.

Now, if you just want to broaden your horizons a little...

Flobots - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuK2A1ZqoWs
Deltron 3030 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdur7odHUfE&feature=related
K-Os - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6VrgPMLsiE
Psyche Origami - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFwoewkV9Cw

But yeah, I don't really like a lot of new music either. None of the bands I listed are newer than 4 or 5 years.

I (and plenty of people out there) like rock and aren't rockists. Is your world shattered now?
What is a rockist, then? (it's dented irreparably)

---

To be honest, it's a term I've never heard before, so let me lay out a bit of explanation:

If a musician really likes some music, I believe it will variably influence his/her output. This makes most genres not as dead as people like to think. You should check out Wolfmother if you think classic rock is dead. I'd point you toward Immortal Technique and The Roots for some hip-hop which is largely out of he mainstream, and Gogol Bordello's still rocking out in the spirit of punk. You could respond that these bands are shit, but that wouldn't really contribute to the argument since it's just a subjective statement.

The argument is that something so wide-reaching as a music genre will live on in one way or another. The fact that the 60's, 70's and 80's are mere decades away makes it way to early for me to say anything about the aforementioned genres claiming that they're completely gone.

Not many people listen to classical music anymore. Saying that it's dead is just as ludicrous.

Ah, ok. I'm not one either. We're good.

Excuse me. I assumed a rockist is someone who merely holds rock as a favourite genre.

However, it is still a matter of taste to say that at some point, people got music right and then never again. I know many who would say the same of classical music, though it is gone from the mainstream of today, relegated to radio and film scores. I am one to say that the LA Philharmonic is the best thing I've ever seen in terms of musicianship. I won't say that I'm a 'classicist.' Everything changes.

I also won't give people shit for liking something that I don't. Tone down the aggression.
