You think this would have gotten any news airtime when there's Modern Warfare 2's ENCOURAGING TERRORISTS to rant on about? :p

'Tis only a matter of time until someone with the skill and too much time on their hands makes a mod to 'fix' that.

Can't really comment further on this though, not seen the scenes yet. I always reroll due to some minor issue with my character before I get that far in. From what I've gathered though, it seems quite the small issue. I know I, at least, have been waiting for the next dialogue apart from the normal instead of waiting for the sex scene.

Ha ha, there was some sort of glitch with the sex scene with Leliana that left her in her underwear, and my character in full plate armor. Ponder that one for a moment.

But seriously, those scenes were cringe-inducing. Mass Effect got a lot of flack for it's utterly tame PG-variety sex scenes, but they were exactly what Bioware should have done in Dragon Age if they didn't want to really 'show' anything. What they gave us just looks ridiculous.

No, your wrong. I cant say more without spoiling something, but your wrong.

OT: I like the romance subplots all the way up to the... urm... awkward love scenes. Curse you Greg for reminding me of how awkward those scenes are. Though I can see where the developers are coming from, video games cannot be taken seriously as an artistic medium if they fear criticism for something a rated R movie contains.

This is what happens when people do something half-assed. Hey, EA? If you're going to have a game complete with scantily clad sex demons, brothels, and college hookups around the camp fire, then at least put some effort into it and go all the way. DA:O's pseudo-eroticism comes of as something conceived by a committee of prudes and giggling 12 year olds. You want to put this sort of thing in a game? Fine, make it something watchable, like Cinemax after 11pm. Hire a bunch of softcore actors for motion-capture sessions, make some sexy in-game models and be done with. So your game will be shrink wrapped with a sticker that says "Ask For ID". Big deal. You'll sell millions of copies anyway

If you don't have the stones to do it right, then don't do it, period. There are plenty of five-star best-selling games that (wait for it) have ZERO sex in them at all and quite frankly, they're better for it. If you want sexy then go hire a corps of Japanese designers to make you a bunch of hot sex bomb characters with costumes and armor that looks like a goth clothing store put through a tree shredder. Otherwise? Focus on the gameplay instead. It's what makes this game shine, even with the immense drag factor of the terrible sex.

Also, I can do without the following things:

1) VO dialogue with EVERY SHOPKEEPER EVERY TIME. Especially dwarfo and his retard sidekick.
2) Zevran.
3) Having to shuttle between camp and my own private fort. Why don't they just camp IN the fort? For that matter, they can all screw there, too. Ever done it on the hard ground? You'll be missing your bed soon enough, my son

On the last sex-related note, did anyone else notice this game has no spears? No one uses spears, and you certainly can't either. Of course, given everything else, it makes sense that this is the weapon they left out.

PS: You tell me why it's an okay "artistic choice" for me to slaughter a possessed child, but seeing nudity in a brothel where you can buy every hooker in rapid succession isn't?
PPS: Why isn't there a trophy for buying every hooker in the place? Or killing children?

it sounds like it'd be just as awkward with nudity anyway, so unless a motivated modder makes a patch to completely re-animate the scenes, i'll just watch and chuckle at the awkwardness.

I simply think it's a situation where the pressure is hitting the designers as much as the suits so they are ultimatly selling out. As I said, we need the gaming industry to fight, and push the limits, Not sell out.

As far as sex scenes go, well this is heroic fantasy even if it's "dark". Sexuality has been part of the genere pretty much forever, look at say "Conan" for an example, or heck for all the criticism it's gotten over the years "Gor" (one of the longest running fantasy series in history).

For sex scenes I look at say when you hire a prostitute in "Gothic 2", or perhaps more to the point if your looking at movies they should be looking at 'R' rated ones for M games like oh say the first "Wild Things".

I found those scenes disapointing and not worth the effort of getting them to like you.

same with mass effect, why bother?

When I first got the sex scene (female mage and Leliana), my first reaction was to burst out laughing. Probably not the effect they were going for.

They obviously didnt want those hateful bastards like Jack Thompson and the like to flip their lids again, even though there are sex scene in every single film over a 12 rating now.

Unless there's a different version of Gothic 2, that scene was also fully clothed (and awkward as hell) - how would making Dragon Age's sex scenes like Gothic's help?

All I have to say is that's gotta chafe... Ramming it home with two layers of cloth between, it's like trying to re-sheath your sword with a dead goblin still stuck on the end of it.
That made me laugh. Hard.

DA:O was not really at its best in the "sex scenes", I thought someone had forgotten to change the lighting and make some new animations. It resembled a pile of logs under a bright lamp.

I'm wondering.

Why is she wearing what appears to be a polyester bra? I mean, the material is one thing, but she's clearly not wearing one as part of her normal outfit. Did she go back to her tent, change, and then return so they could do it on the cold rocks by the campfire?

For my money, game designers at a prestigious company like BioWare should look towards cinema for hints on how to show sex without being too dirty. The low lighting was a good start, but it should look like the tent sex scene in Dances With Wolves [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dances_with_Wolves] between Lt. Dunbar and Stands With A Fist and not like two adults rolling around in their underwear by the fire.

Am I right?

To be fair, most hollywood movies have shit sex scenes in as well, because they can't show any actual penetration or a real orgasm (you know, the bits that might indicate that any fun is being had), they have to overexaggerate all the other bits of sex, which is why the protagonists tend to flail around breaking the furniture and the like.

Huh.

I don't know much about this game, but I have the same reaciton every time to sex scenes in games. If you're going to do it, make sure it's appropriate, not gratuitous, and believable.

In this case, I don't know if it was appropriate, so I'll ignore that one, it wasn't gratuitous, but the underwear stretched my credulity too far. It wasn't at all believable, the movements were jerky, and it looked all in all like an attempt to titilate without being able to show anything due to censor fear.

So far my best example of a sex scene is still Mass Effect. It was an appropriate end to the flirting and courting you had done all through the game, it wasn't gratuitous, it was in fact strangely tasteful, and it was believable, because they didn't spend too long trying to show us the ins and outs of the whole thing.

Good observation, loves2spooge. You live up to your name!

Well after watching the video referenced in the article and especially one of it's related videos, I'm much more enthused about this game.

You get to have mother-fuckin demon sex!
How could you resist the face of pleasure?? Now you will know true desire, creature!
