So I've decided to start a new segment for my impressions for games that I missed or simply didn't have time to address back when they were fresh.
Today is Devil May Cry 5.
Now I've not played a DMC game since the reboot which was really fun despite what the fans may have thought about the new Dante. The action was good, the levels were fun, and really I didn't see what people's problems where other than hating on the game for the sake of it.
Though let me be frank, I'm not a good player at these kinds of games. I play on Normal and I could care less about getting SSS ranks in things. I play to mash buttons and wreck face so in theory the combo system could have been bad back in the DMC reboot.
DMC 5 is fun but really has a bit to the game that I really do not like.
Firstly let's talk the characters. There are three characters that you can play in DMC 5 for various missions. Nero, who wields a big sword and has various mechanical arm weapons that he can use to do all kinds of different attacks. V, a guy who uses a raven, panther, and golem to attack the enemies. Then there is Dante of course who plays just like he did in previous DMC games with a few new toys to play with.
V is a blast to play, the way using the demons to attack instead of himself works really really well and it's just fun to cause loads of chaos with him.
Nero sucks, I hate him. His gun is slow and bland, his sword is slow and bland, and his only saving grace is using his various mechanic arms to do different things but because you are limited in using these arms it limits the fun on him. You are forced to play through a few levels with Nero but afterwards you can select whoever you want, and I never pick Nero.
Dante is old school DMC, and he is just as fun as always. His twin pistols are badass, his swords are cool, he can even become a brawler with his fists and bash faces with a demon motorcycle. He is over the top and it's great. Dante is by far the deepest character to play as he has four fighting stances and several weapons that change how he plays in load of different combinations. But he isn't as fun as V.
DMC 5 is as good as you've come to expect action wise, and the levels are okay. But the environments get samey really really fast and it becomes a bit stale towards the end. Though I am playing on Son of Sparta difficulty which I think is Hard but I'm not sure. I do know that the game is a grind if you play it for too long of a sitting.
I powered through 13 missions in one sitting and after about 5 or 6 missions I was feeling the grind of the difficulty mode. The enemies aren't hard but fuck they are spongy and it just wears on you especially as you get good at the game and they stop being a threat. They become easy to deal with, but because of their health pools they all feel like a grind and that really hurts the game in my eyes.
It's much better on Easy or Normal when the bad guys don't have so much health that every fight is just agony.
However the cut scenes are over the top fun, the story makes no sense really but that's not what people play DMC for anyway.
Frankly if you like hack n slash games, and are looking for a game to bridge you till BAyonetta 3 then DMC 5 is a decent enough bet. Especially on sale.
The music is badass, the sound is great, the game is beautiful even if the environments get samey.
DMC 5 is fun but I don't think it's as good of a game as the reviews made it out to be. It's a solid grab on sale. $20 bucks is a good deal for it. Do not pay Full price for this.
