So I've decided to start a new segment for my impressions for games that I missed or simply didn't have time to address back when they were fresh.

Today is Devil May Cry 5.

Now I've not played a DMC game since the reboot which was really fun despite what the fans may have thought about the new Dante. The action was good, the levels were fun, and really I didn't see what people's problems where other than hating on the game for the sake of it.

Though let me be frank, I'm not a good player at these kinds of games. I play on Normal and I could care less about getting SSS ranks in things. I play to mash buttons and wreck face so in theory the combo system could have been bad back in the DMC reboot.

DMC 5 is fun but really has a bit to the game that I really do not like.

Firstly let's talk the characters. There are three characters that you can play in DMC 5 for various missions. Nero, who wields a big sword and has various mechanical arm weapons that he can use to do all kinds of different attacks. V, a guy who uses a raven, panther, and golem to attack the enemies. Then there is Dante of course who plays just like he did in previous DMC games with a few new toys to play with.

V is a blast to play, the way using the demons to attack instead of himself works really really well and it's just fun to cause loads of chaos with him.

Nero sucks, I hate him. His gun is slow and bland, his sword is slow and bland, and his only saving grace is using his various mechanic arms to do different things but because you are limited in using these arms it limits the fun on him. You are forced to play through a few levels with Nero but afterwards you can select whoever you want, and I never pick Nero.

Dante is old school DMC, and he is just as fun as always. His twin pistols are badass, his swords are cool, he can even become a brawler with his fists and bash faces with a demon motorcycle. He is over the top and it's great. Dante is by far the deepest character to play as he has four fighting stances and several weapons that change how he plays in load of different combinations. But he isn't as fun as V.

DMC 5 is as good as you've come to expect action wise, and the levels are okay. But the environments get samey really really fast and it becomes a bit stale towards the end. Though I am playing on Son of Sparta difficulty which I think is Hard but I'm not sure. I do know that the game is a grind if you play it for too long of a sitting.

I powered through 13 missions in one sitting and after about 5 or 6 missions I was feeling the grind of the difficulty mode. The enemies aren't hard but fuck they are spongy and it just wears on you especially as you get good at the game and they stop being a threat. They become easy to deal with, but because of their health pools they all feel like a grind and that really hurts the game in my eyes.

It's much better on Easy or Normal when the bad guys don't have so much health that every fight is just agony.

However the cut scenes are over the top fun, the story makes no sense really but that's not what people play DMC for anyway.

Frankly if you like hack n slash games, and are looking for a game to bridge you till BAyonetta 3 then DMC 5 is a decent enough bet. Especially on sale.

The music is badass, the sound is great, the game is beautiful even if the environments get samey.

DMC 5 is fun but I don't think it's as good of a game as the reviews made it out to be. It's a solid grab on sale. $20 bucks is a good deal for it. Do not pay Full price for this.

People had good reason to hate the reboot, beyond hating for the sake of it. But some of those people did exists.

1. DmC (2013) was supposed to replace an already successful franchise with a couple of hanging plot threads from 4. The game was on the let's be like every Unreal 3 Engine, dark and "edgy" cuz COD or Gears of War. A huge problem with 7th generation, when everyone (especially Japanese developers) were trying to be more "Western".

2. Tameem and Ninja Theory would not shut up and constantly belittled classic DMC as a whole and the entire fan base. "Professional" critics and Capcom enabled them doing nothing, or in the critics case; jumping the bandwagon and tagging in on mocking any DMC fan.

3. DmC had worse game play (no royal guard, lesser moves, color coded enemies, worse devil trigger, no lock on), too easy even on the hardest difficulty, getting SSS ranks were a joke, lame bosses (the dream runners put up actual fights), and shitty versions of Dante and Vergil. DmC!Dante I tolerate now, but back then, I hated him more than Ayane or Kratos. DmC!Vergil is still a piece of shit.

4. DmC only became fun on PC with 60fps and free mods, or the Definitive Edition that removed all of the annoying gameplay elements or improved them.

The damage sponge enemies are problem on Dante Must Die. It was never a problem in DMC1, and a problem that was fixed in 4 and DmC. Why do this again is beyond me. You're better than that Itsuno. Son of Sparda difficulty is the best one in DMC5 in terms of balance.

Dante is the best to play, of course. Nero is great, you just got to know how to use him. V is awesome, but his problem is that his moves are limited, and he should have gotten one more summon. I.E Phantom. The prequel novel explains why Phantom does not return in familiar form. Ironically, Astral Chain took V's game play further than Capcom ever imagined.

If you can get the game full price or sale, it's worth it either way. Especially on the PC version, as you get free mods from the fans. DMC5's main problem is lack of bonus content compared to DMC3 Special Edition, Bayonetta 1&2, Transformers Devastation, or even Nier: Automata. There's bloody palace, which usually is an unlock after beating the game (thanks DmC for starting the trend of making it free DLC), and some lazy color swaps & extra weapons (hidden behind pre-order bonus/DLC). Hell, the live-action cut-scenes, music from the old games, and style announcers are this too. This was the same problem DmC (2013) had with weapon skins and some extra costumes. I betcha there is going to be a DMC5 Special Edition that fixes most of the problems I listed.

It's been 10 years since DMC4, so it was worth the wait, despite some problems. If you a action game fan, don't sleep on it. With Bayonetta being re-released on PS4 in two months, I can have my Bayo application stand proud next to my Devil May Cry folder.

I couldn't disagree more on Nero and V.

I hated the V sections. V's combat consists of you mashing the attack buttons and hoping the animals are close enough to their targets. The stupid panther must've spent 30% of the time spinning in the air at nothing, because I performed a launcher while he wasn't in the proper place yet. And because you can't actually move them yourself you have to wait for the game to move them. And one of the cardinal sins in gaming is if a game makes you wait on something for absolutely no reason. It wasn't even that it made the game harder, because I was getting S ranks left and right just for hammering square and triangle.

With Nero on the other hand I actually felt like I had control over my attacks and that I needed skill to perform the more elaborate moves to get my style meter up. He also had a nice simple collection of attack methods with the sword/gun/arm variety, as opposed to Dante where you already start out with a pretty dizzying amount of options, only for even more to get piled on. Once the bike showed up I lost interest in the game, since it felt like his combat became more and more unfocused. I also hated how they changed certain moves I'd been using when the Dante sword shows up.

That is where you're wrong. The combat gets more interesting. Then you have the best version of Royal Guard and Gunslinger that actually improved upon the mechanics in DMC4. In 4, I barely used Gunslinger or Royal Guard outside of certain boss fights. To see them address and fix the problems from Dante's game play left me smiling and actually left me to experiment a lot. Combat is a lot more focused than you realized.

The training mode got a lot more uses. Ey Platinum, whenever you release Bayonetta 3, can you please just make training its own separate mode and not just the load screen? You are correct about them switching up the controls for Dante Devil Sword, but after a couple of days, you get used to it. For me it did anyway. Void mode helped a lot in this regard.
