What.
This smacks of that half-assed (I think it was Google's idea) Facebook clone that tracked pretty much everywhere you went on the internet and showed it off to your friends. At what point did companies decide that everyone wants to wave giant glowing neon signs over themselves?
When I play games, a lot of the time I want to play them by myself. I don't want friends to interrupt anymore than I want people talking to me while I'm watching a movie. I don't want everyone to see what I've played, when, and for how long. Maybe I've just got the loner mentality (although I've been an avid Team Fortress 2 team player for years), or maybe I've got more to be embarrassed about than the average person. Either way, I can't be the only one who thinks this is a terrible, terrible idea.
I mean, I dunno about you guys, but I've been to some questionable sites in my day (intentionally or not) and you know what? I really don't want to tell anyone. It feels like the goal of this "greater social connectivity" that everyone seems to be pushing lately is just an excuse to be able to legally and easily obtain information off users for ad-related shenanigans. Sure, leaderboards are a great place to wave your e-peen around, but come on. Maybe if you gave me the option of uploading something, like Steam's new screenshot system. I like that. It lets me show off what I want to show off, and if I don't, nothing happens.
Not everything has to be a social experience. Sometimes I just wanna disappear into a game, and nothing kills immersion faster than "xxxN00berxxx has messaged you: lol sup dude?"
Half the fun of multiplayer games is based around the anonymity. If you want, you can find a community to settle down and build up a name for yourself, but sometimes you just wanna find a random public server to dick around in.
