The worst part is that they are going to strap people down and force them to pay for micro-transactions and play casual games whether they want to or not. And how dare they appeal to the casual gamers anyway? They aren't even real gamers.
I certainly hope you're being sarcastic.
I totally am being sarcastic.
I can't tell anymore. Yesterday I was talking with someone who said more or less the same thing but with more swearing and rage. It's embarrassing to be linked with such people.

That video really really bothered me. Ms takes that avatar crap too far. They are a small improvement over Nintendo Miis. And I don't care about those, either. I just wish Microsoft would just work on its crap service instead of just placing more and more features. Nice nod to bf2 though. Good touch. But, not enough for me to jump up and down. I like Steam, so I'm sticking to it...

Dear lord... How in the... What?

At least we have Steam...

Also, I still find it funny how their avatars are basically Miis that you can pay money for.

Oooookaaayyy.

Why is Microsoft still in the gaming business on the PC? Technically, the only "Microsoft" product I use with PC games is Windows. I haven't bought a Microsoft game since MS Flight Sim 5. To give you an idea of how long ago that was, the bloody thing took up all of two 3.5" floppies.

If it was me, I'd just call Microsoft PC gaming arm dead and amputate. Let the other companies that actually know what the hell they're doing take the carcass and fight over it.

Honestly it would've been fine if it didn't have the BF2 sequence.
"Well they still have the mainstream/hardcore stuff for us- oh god. OH GOD. IS NOTHING SAFE? WILL I BE SHOOTING AVATARS INSTEAD OF LOCUST IN GEARS OF WAR? NOOOOOOOO"

What happened to everyone here saying that there's no such thing as hardcore and casual gaming?
The "hardcore" or "real" or whatever gamers have been targeted right from when people were gnawing their controllers over the frustration of Contra on the NES. Now that games are being spread to a wider audience, it becomes exclusive to those who were there from the start?

And like everyone else has said, if it's that big of a deal, Steam isn't going anywhere.

Buying things enhances my gaming and entertainment experience.
Yeaaaah....
I think they forgot to add the last part

"...if I am buying entertaining games."

That last bit at the end was kinda cool though, I'm sure rich people would love it if you could just buy a crate full of Rocket Launchers and drop them at your team's spawn in Halo Reach.

I'll just copy/paste what I said about this earlier:

So... who are they targeting with this?

The casual market is already on facebook, and GFWL is nowhere near as user-friendly, so they won't be using this.
The hardcore PC gamer market isn't exactly on the best of terms with Microsoft for obvious reasons.
And everyone else either doesn't care or just uses Steam.
Any Xbox owners they'd hope to target will have Xbox's, and won't really care. They'll just do the stuff the video showed on their 360's. Unless they're going after the people who'll want to change Xbox stuff on their PC's. In which case thats a pretty specific market to target. Since anyone with a gaming PC will probably be turned off by the look of all of this.

So... yeah, whats their plan, exactly?
Reminds me of the south park underwear gnomes. When questioned why they steal underwear they refer to their business plan which reads:
Step 1: Collect Underpants
Step 2: ????
Step 3: Profit
They have yet to figure out how Step 1 will equal Step 3 but they do it anyway.

My guess is it's an upcoming April Fool's joke that someone spotted, took seriously and leaked. At least that is how they will probably play it.

The commmunity will be reconciled and we will all laugh and dance and play until one day when we wake up and that video is the new reality and any dissenters to the new PC regime will be shot.

Doubleplusungood man, doubleplusungood.

Again, this is the worst future for PC gaming I could ever imagine. Thank you Microsoft but I'll stick to a group more aligned with my interests....

It looks like they are focusing more on the casual gamers with disposable income. Not a bad business plan, a one or two dollar purchase every week probably sounds better to them than a 60 dollar purchase every few months, but it feels like we core gamers are being left out in the cold.

What I don't understand is why Microsoft would build another platform/system when they already have perfectly good ones that have extensive user bases. For example, Msn Messenger/Windows Live Messenger has a large base and the basic games are there. Additionally, it is a social platform so it would be a far better option for attracting casual gamers. If they rolled out the stuff in the video for that, it would probably be much more successful than creating a new one from scratch.

Alternatively, add a scaled back version for Internet Explorer, perhaps sweetening the deal with access to exclusive content such as a free game or a bunch of robot cows for Farmville. Perhaps dig into their massive back catalog of games they released over the years and use the re-releases as incentives.

Even using the resources to easily integrate more games into the basic Windows platform, adding them to the ranks of Freecell and Hearts would be a step in the right direction. Create simple, stable system to expand this, and put a free download of Halo up as bait, and watch it succeed.

What does it matter, we're all going to keep using steam.
When Microsoft completes this abomination they'll probably release many PC games that use it exclusively.
But they'll be games made by microsoft - when was the last time they made anything worth spending cash on for the PC?

Then again, they do have the Halo IP to milk :/
Alright, maybe they don't release much personally, but it's pretty safe to assume that it'll have at least the adoption rate of Games For Windows Live right?

GFWL was the platform for Arkham Asylum, Fallout 3, Grand Theft Auto 4, Bulletstorm, and tons of other games.

It really does look like this is going to be a problem.
