Leaked Modern Warfare 2 Opening Will Be Controversial

Looks pretty real to me, and would make a ton of sense given the trailers released, and press releases stating there are multiple characters to control. Having one on each side of the conflict would be an interesting touch.

For the gamer to really understand the scene, though, they may need a bit of backstory. The first game was entirely the good guys perspective, so the revenge quest seems a bit odd.

Hooray for depravity... I love it when franchises go for controversial topics to exploit for media attention.
OT: I think this is fake. The only reason anyone would put this in a game is to gain attention from the media, and MW2 is more famous than any other game at this point, so I don't think they would cause all of that controversy for no reason. It would be as bad as making a game set in New Orleans and filling it with drowned corpses. OH WAIT.

maybe its just like the beginning in COD4 where the guy dies, maybe they do it again and this time it's you causing an international situation and you die again? It looks interesting I'm excited to say the least to see where this is going

Alright, now that this is out... how long do you think it will be before the media starts telling the masses that you play the entire game as a terrorist?

I disagree. I'd be willing to bet Infinity Ward's reasoning behind forcing the player to commit such horrible acts against innocent civilians is fully for the purpose of making the player uncomfortable and enraged. It brings an intense emotional response that no cinematic ever could.

It is exactly what's going to happen in a mainstream title such as Modern Warfare 2.

Imagine FauxNews's report and the 12 year olds/40 year old blue collar dads sneaking out to stores to buy copies.

Controversy=Popularity=Sales.

A game where I play a bad guy that kills innocent people? How refreshing! I sure have never seen or played a game like that before! (GTA, Prototype, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Assassin's Creed, The Sims 3 Saint's Row, God Of War and a gazillion other games) "Angry person is angry >"

well they threw a fit about Diablo 2 so I don't think it will take long, it is a highly anticipated game. Then again, if they want to alienate viewers they could try to start up the whole games are bad thing and the government should regulate them garbage.

I just want to point out that this is game will be rated Mature. This means that, for all the controversy and brain-washing censorship hiding behind the "think of the children" banner, the children aren't meant to play it. This sequence is dark as hell, but really those of us who are 17+ will be able to handle it.
That being said, I expect to be the only person who has hit puberty on any of my teams when I get the game.

I could see something like this, you get near the end of the section then BLAM!, you get taken down by a sniper or rifleman, and then you take their place and push them back.

just wishful thinking, it probably wont be anything like that. Its more than likely a replica of the CoD4 beginning like you said, where you dont actually move, but possibly still shoot.
doubt you will exchange places, but, maybe you hold out while your buddies get the plane moving and just before you escape you get shot in the back and die maybe? like I said, I look forward to seeing how this turns out.

Come to think of it, the guy above me (AstorSapolsky) is right. How the fuck are they going to complain that this game HURTS THE CHILDREN!11111oneoneone when the little fucks ARE NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYING IT in the first place? I tell you, non obedient kids, or to be more precise their parents (one of them might be YOU!), are sometimes ruining the fun for the rest of us. Just look at poor Australia :(

It seems a little too close to real life for comfort...watching that video made me remember stuff about hostage situations and terrorist attacks that I've heard about in the news etc. But who knows, maybe it'll turn out that airport was full of 'bad guys' :)

Cause mommy and daddy will buy it for them anyways seeing as being a parent now includes putting the dumb brat in front of the tv and let them play games now. (not everyone is that brat, but, you know exactly who I'm talking about, you at least know one person that fills the criteria.)

Yes, these things really do happen. There are books about them, there are films about them, why not games?

Why not? Why shouldn't mainstream titles strive to elevate video games as a form of interactive storytelling through darker and more adult means?
Because it's Activision-Blizzard and they have a reputation to think of. Burning Nazis is okay. Slaughtering hordes of aliens also. But shooting helpless civilians in an airport? I don't think so. It's as if EA would release a Sims game with explicit sex scenes. Not going to happen.
Especially not with an U.S. company, where anything having todo with airplanes and terrorism is still a very sensitive issue.

I'm...not really sure what to say to this. I mean, of course Infinity Ward and indeed any video game developer should be allowed to put whatever they want into their video game, as book and movie writers may. But I would say this is far over the line. I mean...it's appalling. Massacring innocent civilians is a horrible thing and something I honestly don't want to play out. Why Infinity Ward would decide to make such an event into a playable mission is beyond me.

Of course, that is assuming this is real and not a hoax. I think it very well may be. I can't imagine why a mainstream developer like Infinity Ward would feel compelled to include such a thing into their game, especially one that is highly popular, will be highly publicized, and will be played by many children. It's far different from a relatively niche game like Manhunt.

Considering the widespread criticism this mission would receive, and how much it would hurt IW, I think there's a high chance that this is a joke. I sort of hope it is. If it is, I would think we should get confirmation from IW soon enough. How long has this video been circulating?

This could be a good way to open, after all the object of a good enemy is to be threatening in combat and in story. This wouldn't be achieved as well by just fighting against them, as convincing the player to fear them, while you mow them down by the bus load, is difficult. However seeing them slaughter innocents where you are not only powerless to stop them, but are right in there getting involved with them, would be a fantastic groundbreaking new method. It will make some people grin and question their motives, and some sick to their stomach. Provoking complex emotions in exactly the way a well told story should.
