i've said it before and i'll say it again, victorian england would be an awesome setting. i mean, there was enough assassination attempts on queen victoria alone. although i think i would prefer going back to a time period where there wasn't any guns...

There are only so many times I can say Roman Empire, Feudal Japan, and Feudal China before I sound like a broken record.

But I guess The French Revolution won't be so bad. As long as they don't butcher the accents and the game is fun. They're going to have a tough time topping Black Flag.
Fuedal Japan would be way too obvious for an AC game, I for one appreciate them doing something out of the norm. However only available next gen? I hope those of us on 360/PS3 aren't stuck with some shitty time waster like Liberation.
I only have an Xbox 360 and dont plan on getting a next gen console for a long time but I am happy that its next gen exclusive, that way the whole game is planned with the intention of taking advantage of next gen and it may actually look like a next gen game instead of the same game with better framerate and resolution, that way when I eventually get a next gen console I will be able to play something that in no way could I play on the previous one with things that can really suprise me.

OT: I am also happy they are dropping pirates, I like them and all but I really dont want to see AC become simply a pirate game franchise, IV was a good pirate game and I wouldnt mind them doing another pirate game as a new IP that could trully go full out pirate instead of trying to mix AC with pirates.

French Revolution? I can get behind that. Earlier I was hearing rumors about the next AC game being set in Russia during the Bolshevik Revolution, also an exciting and largely unexplored time period. Since you say there's two games this time maybe both rumors are true.

I hope Ubisoft realizes that Assassin's Creed doesn't need to be set in time periods with guns though.

Um... are they using Parkour as a verb? Can it be used as a verb?
This is English, any word can by anything!

Ugh I smell Assassins Creed 3 all over again. The fucking French revolution? Lemme guess, Robespierre was actually an Assassin. Fuck it. I'll wait around for Assassins Creed: Bakumatsu.
Seeing as the Assassins are usually painted as the good guys and Robespierre was a pretty awful person, I highly doubt they'll make him an assassin. On the other hand, I could definitely see them making him a Templar. I wonder if they'll put "let them eat cake" in the game.
It is quite a conundrum.
On one hand, Robespierre was far from a good guy. On the other hand, the Templars have always been the defenders of status quo and control; so it is out of character for them to act as the main figures of such a chaotic time. Having Louis XV as a Templar is more in line with their agenda, but it would require Ubisoft to picture many of the Assassins in a less than flattering light.
Or they could go the AC 3 route, where the Templars acted in both fronts and the rest of the big players were neither Templars or Assassins.
My guess is Robespierre and other famous revolutionaries start off as high ranking assassins, but end up taking things too far, possibly leading to internal conflict in the Brotherhood.

The outfit is getting a bit conspicuous...how can standing in broad daylight in that getup -not- scream assassin? Still getting to parkour all over Notre Damme herself (hopefully)? Yes...very yes.

The Assassins are usually people who were vilified by history, not the Templars.

Well done guys.. you've finally picked the interesting 18th century republican Revolution. It only took you two times out of two, but we forgive you.

And this is why the French revolution is interesting, because history (well, American history) hasn't narrativized it into a heroic struggle between good and evil. A lot of the politics involved are quite subtle and complicated.

Robespierre's "enlightened" beliefs and radical anti-monarchism were very extreme. He was also, by all accounts, an exceptional and charismatic man and quite admirable in many ways. But he had very little commitment to the idea of personal freedom. People forget quite how much moralism and authoritarianism was a part of the enlightenment tradition too. I think he's a Templar personally, but I also think the two sects are way more similar than they pretend to be.

Louis XVI (Louis XV died about 20 years before the revolution) comes across from history as a bit of a pushover. I'm not sure he'd make a particularly good Templar, unless they were going for the Mel Brooks version. As an indecisive puppet being pulled about by various factions in his own court, however..

For some reason, I'm also taking a long bet that the Marquis de Sade (a la Geoffrey Rush's portrayal in Quills) will turn up as an assassin.

Pope Alexander VI. Probably the most controversial pope in history. :p

Now that i think about it, im not sure i want this as much as i thought i did. Heres the thing ive been wanting this since they started doing different time periods, and idealy to me this would have a heavy political focus to the story with all the intrigue and unrest during the setting. But i really dont think the AC team can really pull it off to the degree i would like them to. I dont think they're bad writers and they will deliver a competent story but not the amazing one they really have the potential to do.

Interestingly, a lot of attempts has been made to sanitize it as a "good vs bad guys" kind of revolution, throughout history. Similar to cases like Alexander the Great campaign and life, it depends on the nationality and personal outlook of the historian and the people it addresses.

For example, when reviewing history during more authoritarian regimes, the role of Robespierre as an anarchist and power hungry demagogue is accentuated, while in more socialist (or new republics) regimes, the role of Robespierre is decreased to focus on the monarchy "oppressing the poor people" and the french revolution as the archetypal people's revolution.

It will be interesting to see it develop. So far, Ubisoft has been relatively fair in terms of portraying historical characters as three dimensional instead of going for the historical caricatures.

I'd actually much rather have the French Revolution than the American one. Since pretty much no one involved was even vaguely morally defensible, it would leave the whole hero/villian aspect appropriately murky. Also, resistance-era France has tons of interesting buildings to piddle about with, unlike colonial America.

Hopefully they go back to actually focusing on assassinating things. Having a relatively open game area and a target was the most fun way to play the game. Just as long as they don't go overboard and make every mission a game of red light green light.

Assassin's Creed is one of my favorite franchises so I'm always happy to see a new one. Though an extra year or two inbetween games wouldn't kill me. I have to say, I think France will be a fun setting. I just hope they throw a few buildings in that actually requiring some thinking to climb, or the platforming puzzles that were the crypts in AC2. The games used to have much more platforming and climbing that was more than just press forward to climb everywhere.

These games can be much improved by ditching the whole ludicrous black and white templar/assassin nonsense and just try to realize each period faithfully, without all that magic.

They made Machiavelli an Assassin and the second game was sympathetic to the Medici of all people, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't make Robespierre one.

Wow! Almost makes me wish AC wasn't suffering from the Star Trek movie curse, because this one is going to turn out to be merde.

Good news as long as there are no excess of follow missions. Also Screw parkouring thought the Paris skyline i wanna tour the catacombs myself. Speaking of which seeing as Paris is a pretty old city we can have missions like in Brotherhood with the secret underground temples and whatnot.

Fair enough. It just seems weird to think of them somehow portraying Robespierre as sympathetic when he had a death squad going around killing people who had different views from him.

This.

Black Flag brought a nice warm color palette to the game and I'm not willing to go back to the grey-ish washed out filters. Even the setting, I can totally imagine a YouTube video of stories of this and AC3 running side by side, pointing out the similarities.

I think we're past the point of being just an assassin doing assassiny stuff discovering he's been lied to in the semifinal sequence. In AC3 we had a native american protagonist trying to help his tribe for the most part, which was extraordinary yet not out of place. In Black Flag we had a fortune-seeking pirate, which was stereotypical yet fun to play. I can't possibly imagine what interesting reason for your actions they're gonna come up with in this one. A member of working class trying to help his starving family? A monarch secretly supporting democracy? Boooooooooring...

Templars distorting history to vilify prominent Assassins and Assassin-sympathizers is a pretty common (though subtle) part of the series.

Imagine if Robespierre's death squads were actually murdering people who the Templar's were mind-controlling with a Piece of Eden. Then Robespierre's actions would be more justified, but "Templar history" (real history) portrays it differently.
