I don't want to read everything, but I bet everything that pisses me off is covered. But to recap.....

Action time button sequence smashing whatever the hell they're called.....annoying

What's wrong with making the game a little fucking easier but adding more content? Making a game really hard in one spot so that it drags the game on just pisses people off.

Storytelling is great; learn to do it within the game, cutscenes should be used sparingly. And never make it to where we can't skip some boring ass scene with a high pitched voice over.

I also hate games trying to be longer by adding mini games that had no thought put into them......I think I basically just hate asshole developers who want to make games longer by doing a lot of random things that do nothing for the story, nothing for the fun factor, nothing for replayability, and could have instead been used to put MORE CONTENT into the game. More original obstacles, levels, guns, items, believable characters, making the player feel smarter, making the player feel absorbed at the right times. I'll stop rambling now

1. going into a roonm wlaking across said room then something happens (go tun on power to advance.) do it like zelda in OOT i have no key BAM! someone jumps down who has it beat them move on.

2. Raceing games with no inside view. (Forza 2)

3. Escort missions. it would be better if the AI actually fought along side you.

4. Fixed Camera Angle. we are way past this i think.

5. Realistic Physical Damage. cant wait for Alone in The Dark.

6. EA . thats it.

Easily my most hated feature in any game is the obligatory "Stealth Level" in the non-stealth game. These atrocities are becoming more and more a thing of the past, but every once and a while one will pop up and the game has just lost about 4 5/6 cool points.
Paticulary since the reason is usually rather arbitrary. You've just killed 47,000 of the enemies troops, but suddenly you have to be quiet and not trigger the alarm or all will be lost(automatic failure). Jedi Knight 2 was a great example of how retarded this was.

Xenosaga etc.
Played through all 3, very good story. It's a shame they only did three games instead of 6 like originally planned.

And Xenogears pissed me off because my disk died before I finished the game, and I can't find it anywhere.

Back on topic though.

Games whose only attempt at a scifi twist is to tack unneeded giant robots to the game, or toss in aliens for the hell of it.

Or, to widen it out a little, any scifi game where the story is the same old generic garbage.

I'm kinda new to this and only joined for this thread. i am an avid 360 fan and play LIVE often. I am sick of people telling me which games to get. I mean seriously, if I wanted a realistic shooting game like COD4 I'd join the fucking army. Oh and by the way COD4 is not real in any way or shape on earth. One shot, dead. No "wolverine" bollocks or even a fucking health pack can heal a round to the chest. If it did, their would be a hell of a lot more people on planet earth. Trust me, if war was any fun, we'd all be thanking Hitler for the "wonderful game". In contrast, if I wanted to rollick around in an unknown universe toying with the shards of a dumbass, alien, "Who gives a shit lets get back to earth" plot I'd take fucking LSD's. I like games that do exactly what they say on the tin. None of this "unrivalled physics" or "realism" bollocks. 'Caus actually, their only fucking video games designed to cease boredom for a few hours before getting on with your life. Also, come on guys. How the fuck can you hate mini games. They're either non obligitary or their just to wast time anyway. Which seems a little weird, wasting time within a video game or helping the time pass easier. 'Caus lets face it video games are mini games to life. Please stop moaning about wolverine healing. If you can't master it you'r colourblind. Normal Vision= You're fine. Red/blurred Vision = you're dead. Please, please go to your local opticians now or wake up from this "I suck at life so I'll rule at close to life video games" state of mind.

It should go chunk of plot/conversation, then checkpoint, then action, not checkpoint, plot, action, lest you see the exact same conversation or cutscene 12 times from dying.

Minigames for unlocking/hacking things etc. Mass Effect, Bioshock (Great games nonetheless, but the minigame gets dull the 100th time through)

Ally AI in general. Gears of War, Mass Effect characters who run in front of my gun while I'm firing.

Excessively unbalanced maps in RTS games. Particularly in terms of the enemy being technologically superior to me. Just for example, if you're playing Starcraft Terran v. Terran and they have access to seige tanks and you dont.

Grinding. Anything that makes grinding necessary. Grinding against much weaker foes because the Elite Four are on level 60 and the biggest pokemon you can find to fight are lvl 45.

Not getting EXP from quests. Give me EXP and your crappy item instead of just your crappy item.

I'd say besides many of the things listed in here, like escort missions, wolverine-esque health bars, bad camera angles, and such, I have to add cut-scenes in general. Now I'm not just talking about the really long, boring one's you can't skip. I mean all of them. If a developer can't tell a part of the story while the player is still in control (as in designing the level structure and the like to progress the story) then they shouldn't even bother making the game. It's not like game technology of today isn't advanced enough to allow them to do everything they'd do in a cutscene in game. It's just tacky and shows how lazy the developer is when it comes to writing and game design. Cutscenes are like commercials. There you are enjoying your show, then suddenly someone's on the screen yelling at you that you need these pills, or your razor doesn't have enough blades, or that your life isn't complete without their amazing product (which is probably something someone else already makes but they added an mp3 player or something). Point is, cutscenes, for me, detract from the gaming experience. They're abrupt interruptions that are archaic hold-overs from gamings past.

A personal pet peeve of mine is the annoying habit of most FPS's to strip you of your weapons at least once. I thought it would eventually go away, but it still seems to happen in FPS's too often.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth, while not strictly an FPS, pulls this like 4 times over the course of the game. This is particularly disappointing considering you only have weapons for the latter half.

amazingly retarded AI which is also schizophrenic - when the AI of your teammates is so ridiculously worse than the enemy AI when your team are meant to be super trained, roidy heroes and the enemy are terrorists constripted from the local bar.
Halo is a good example of the schizophrenic style of AI - the marines normally little more than scenery when angered (only by you not by the evil freakin aliens) will turn into a death force unlike any you have known, with deluxe cyber vision, pinpoint accuracy up to a distance of 5miles using an SMG and the constitution of a bull elephant. Although if exposed to a grunt they quail with terror, but confronted by a 7ft tall, 1ton behemoth in full body armour and highly trained they take it upon themselves to prove their honour and destroy him.
seriously these guys should learn how to use this secret roidy strength to take on the covenant, you wouldnt NEED the master chief, EVAR.

Weapon degradation: This particularly made me mad in Oblivion, where I would be using my broadsword to hack away some demon, then it would break and I'd be toast.

Stupid AI: Dom from Gears of War, I'm looking at you. Nice work running in front of the massive boss at the end of the game and getting shot within 30 seconds! Mass Effect had some problems with stupid AI as well.

Tutorials and cutscenes that you can't skip: I would love to skip Oblivion's 20 minute sewer tutorial on my third time creating a character, but I can't. Having checkpoints before cutscenes (not after) is also annoying. Particularly before boss fights.

I can't think of any more at the moment, but I'm sure I will come across more mentionable ones.

I think I would also like to add the in-depth character creation for a single player game...
Oblivion goes all out on that, but it's just single player, you really don't see the character all that much, and chances are... No one else does either.

Now, not saying char customization is bad, i just have a bad habit of tweaking everything to perfection. So the only thing stopping me from starting a new char on oblivion, would be the fact that i'd literally spend 30-60 mins on just that alone.

Also, why do none of the MMORPG-ers have this in-depth customization?
And how did SOE mess up EQ2 so bad, when EQ1 was sooooo gooood?

Absolutely I agree with escort missions, forced stealth missions in a game that isnt at all about stealth, and jumping puzzles in games that arent platformers.

But my biggest one, that thank god is hardly ever seen anymore: Save points. I demand to be able to save whenever I damn well want to...

I have 2 things tied for my least favorite feature in FPS.

1) I suck at them

2) Medal of honor games are still being made.

Boss rushes in the very last level.
It's one thing to put an optional mode in where you have to fight the bosses in a row as fast as you can.
It's another thing entirely to make you fight them all, in a row, usually without rehealing in between.
I mean, come on, I've beaten them before! Why do I need to prove that I can do it with less health?

My two big FPS issues. One Button Grenade option and Quick-melee buttons. The quick-melee should have been in every action game since Duke Nukem3D. It makes no sense that a burley, strapping warmachine is incapable of giving a good solid rap to the noggin of anyone without switching to the melee weapon three buttons over and two submenus deep. Give me SOMETHING, a boot, a riflebutt to the face, a shouldertackle, a headbutt, SOMETHING.

The One Button Grenade ought to have been bog fucking stanadard since Ikari Warriors and every game with grenades that's ever failed to include one should be fucking ashamed. What's the point of giving me grenades if I can't call on them at the exact moment I need them, for example when I've got the enemies pinned down with machinegun fire. By the time I open inventory or fiddle with weapon settings and get the thing out, judge distance, figure out how long to hold the button for, which depends on whether they have a realistic countdown timer or "1-2-3 after the throw" timer everyone that was formerly cowering behind the magazine rack(which inexplicablly causes .223 FMJ's to bounce off like superballs, but that's another rant) is now either spraying my area with lead from afar, or right in my face in perfect range for the quick-melee button that the publisher didn't include except for certain non-grenade weapons(Soldier of Fortune series I'm looking at you, goddamn 8 special use action keys for every weapon and most of them don't even DO anything, except on the goddamn shotgun which already a glorified melee weapon and hardly seems worthwhile to give IT the melee option).

The 'fight while the elevator gets fixed' fight.

Seriously, I'm getting pretty tired of lazy game developers who think that unleashing hoards of enemies at you while the car/elevator/ship/trolley gets fixed is fun. It gives you a little rush, but most of the time it's just frustrating and it's becoming real old, real fast.

How is Mass Effect not an RPG?
Mass Effect is more about shooting than anything else, it's like a traditional third person shooter only crippled. It's a shooter with some rpg eleents thrown in not unlike Bioshock although ME does a much better job at pretending to be an rpg than Bioshock does. Mass Effect would have been better off if they just made a straight 3rd person shooter but kept the dialogue and the planet hopping.
