An awesome TV show that everyone should watch.

(Not seen it, but it's ability to annoy Crystal Violets seems to be worthy of awe)

For every post about this show I get a bigger and bigger desire to watch Emily in Paris. If it generates this much buzz it must be something special!
I guess the joke about me being triggered by Emily in Paris is getting to be old so I will explain why I "exaggerated for humour" dislike the show. It is a lazy portrayal of what an American thinks France is through an unlikable, self-absorbed American character and every French person is a prop for her learnable moments. There is no nuance and it simply is not funny.

I admit I don't care that much about it but everyone brings it up as soon as they hear I am French so I preempt the question lol

Edited - I clicked "post" but was still complaing

Emily in Paris not about showing Paris and teaching about cultural communication as the creators say. It is about showing a fantasy version of Paris Americans want to see. Everywhere is fancy cafƩ and boulevard with rich people drinking wine and fellating baguettes by the Seine but we don't see the expansive poverty ridden socialised houses and run-down areas outside of her rich person's life. Even her fancy apartment is bigger and more optimally located than anything an aged 20 person not related to the Queen of England could afford in Paris. They did not ask a French person "look what I have written. Is this at all accurate?"

Is that unusual though? US TV set in Britain is all tea-drinking, cor blimey, God save the queen, and US TV set in Australia is all GeeDie, Mad Max, kangaroos.

OTOH, Paris syndrome or whatever is a thing that gets people every year (well, when there's not a pandemic going on)

It's not unusual but it is annoying (although I deliberately exaggerate how annoying for humour) because it is so popular and it exists at a time when there is no excuse for such lazy writing. We expected this in the 1990s before great TV emissions made an effort to write compelling stories that undermined the old norms.

And I am not ignoring the American depiction either as a self-absorbed, culturally ignorant narcissist who believes they are the centre point of the universe. Most of the show's "humour" is about cultural differences and misunderstandings that just do not happen to a great degree to foreigners who come to France. I have friends from other countries and it did not take any profound adaptation to get on just fine in Paris.

Fair enough.

Ah, ok, I can see why that would be annoying.

(But now you've made me want to watch the show to see what it's like. Guess there's no such thing as bad publicity)

I guess I'm a little late to this party but I was there for six years or so. I'd like the badge.

Nick (the Editor-in-Chief) has to give the badges out by hand, and since the influx of legacy users became a trickle he's only checked this thread for new ones every few weeks. You might be waiting a bit.

It's okay I'm not actually impatient about it., I was just kidding I've just made my own badge out of alu foil around a carton cut-out and have it currently pinned to my hoody because I'm not a fucking amateur.

Do I have to activate it somehow for it to show up? Or did you just miss me?
