Lego Phone on the Way?

Earlier this year Lego [http://www.lego.com/en-US/default.aspx] and Digital Blue [http://www.digiblue.com/] announced they would be teaming up [http://digiblue.com/press/press_releases/2009/010909.html] to create a variety of Lego-centric electronics aimed at kids including cell phones. Well, maybe.

The Lego Electronics that are due in this Summer consist of a digital camera, a walkie talkie and an MP3 player, but a leaked report to Boy Genius Report talks of something a little more...interesting.

The Lego Electronics, which include a digital camera, walkie talkie and an MP3 player, all look to be a collection of different colored blocks around the main electronics, but if the images on Boy Genius Report are to be believed, the cell phone appears to have a modular design that allows you to assemble the unit however you wish. The ability to mix and match cell phone parts on a whim sounds cool, but would it still work? Is the photo a genuine prototype or just a flight of some artist's fancy? Tough to say.

If the phone really is made up of snap-together parts, the main issue won't be getting the thing to work, but rather not losing some key button or other in the seat cushions. What, like your experience with Legos was any different?

When I read the title I thought that I would see a funny picture of the phone and I was right but I would have never believed that it is that funny.

Way to expand into the 8-12 year old market...
There is such a big market for that age... In all serious though, if I ever felt the need to give my kid a phone at that age, it would be one of those phones that can only call a few numbers such as parents and 911.

I'm honestly not sure how to feel about this. 8-12 year olds wielding this kind of device around are going to make themselves thieving targets, but it looks so... tacky. Would it even be worth stealing?

That is an amazing phone, and I would enjoy owning one if it wasn't a little too kiddish for me. Still cool though.

It might be because I am tired... But it just looks like the only customizable parts are the numeric pad, the screen plate, the buttons, and battery cover. All of which appear to do nothing but vary in color...

8-12? I saw a toddler with a cell phone once. And not a cheap looking phone, either. I'd say she was probably playing with her mom's if her mom didn't have her own out as well. And when I say toddler, I mean this kid could not have been older than 4.

I remember playing with Lego about 33 years ago, good simple fun... nowadays it seems to have lost the plot.

I could see that happening. With the consumerism being pushed onto kids younger and younger these days.

I would definitely buy that phone.

One thing I've noticed about Lego is, we in the UK call it 'Lego' and refer to it as a singular, exampled by my use of the term 'it' to describe it just now.

Americans seem to call 'them' Lego's. that's so interesting that I can't stand it!

But yeah, the phone looks... Odd. I wonder if it will be aimed at kids more than being mainstream. I wonder what colours there will be...

Heh.
