The music from the last level of Halo 3 (One Finale Effort or something) was really great, kinda made me glad I stuck with the crappy campaign :p

I LOVE the themetune to the original Worms game. More heroic than actual war hero music if you ask me.

I almost automatically love soundtracks to games I play a lot, because my brain links good memories to the music. It also happens when I decide to play some other music while playing a game. Surprisingly, Diablo 2 is a game I played for hundreds of hours, but I can hardly remember any music.
So... my favourite Soundtracks:
- Diablo 1
- Starcraft
- Oblivion
- Planescape Torment
- God of War 2
- Super Nintendo Sim City :)

the feeling of isolation you get in Ico and SotC from the music and environment is quite inspiring

Martin O'Donnell for the Halo series. but mainly whoever he hired to play the Mjolnir Mix (i think it was Dave Navarro...), such a badass guitar rip.

Dunno what the Mjolnir Mix is, but I know the electric guitar main theme was played by Steve Vai.

Portal - "Still Alive"
Final Fantasy VII - "One Winged Angel" ('nuff said)
GTA IV - "Intro" (Don't know why, but I loved it)
Killer Instict - I love metal. :D
Mortal Kombat Theme. Love that too. There is one more, but I can't remember the game.

How could this topic get fifty replies without anyone ever mentioning Katamari Damacy? Seriously, I cannot think of a more fitting soundtrack for the game. It is pure genius.

We Love Katamari's soundtrack was okay, but not as good in my opinion.

P.S. : I made an Escapist account just so I could mention Katamari in here. Its omission is baffling :-O

freedom fighters. OMG freedom fighters. great mix of techno beats and classical. Jesper Kyd at his finest.

the MGS series. Harry Gregson-Williams is the best hollywood composer, and these games are examples why.
These, and...
Zelda: OoT, really pulls you into the game.
Mother/Mother 2 (Earthbound), accompanies specific scenes/events and every battle perfectly.
PSO had quite a few good tracks that I still listen to.
Zone of the Enders for KISS ME SUNLIGHTS and The Origin.
Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.

They're machinima...that counts

right?
Ignus Solus is awesome.
Personally the Half Life series has always had great music.
Call me crazy but the music from CoD4 was pretty good too.

The Bioshock sountrack i have to admit guys was pretty sweet, to be walking down a dark, dank corridor with "Somewhere Beyond the Sea" slowly fading out as you approach the next corner, which then lets the strange Bioshock ambience sound fade in.

Halo 3's soundtrack was epic though... even if the game did turn out to sometimes be a massive dissapointment.

Yeah, loved Hell March from Red Alert... Used to always hum it and yell bad German randomly on Busses and Trains cause this'd come into my head, and I've never played em for more than an hour...

Sonic 2 and 3 (Genesis)

Starcraft (YouTube the different songs being done by people, some are just amazing)

Worms World Party

Many more...

I agree with a lot of people on good soundtracks, but one I'd like to put a lot of emphasis on is the MOTHER series/Earthbound (only mentioned once or twice). There's a lot of songs that fit accordingly to the situation at hand, be it Pollyanna in the fields of MOTHER, the final bone-chilling fight against Giygas in Earthbound/MOTHER 2, or the twisted Theme of Love in MOTHER 3 when Lucas must face the one he had never wished to confront in battle.

I'd have to say Overboard and Earthworm Jim.

Mass Effect, the Metroid Prime games, the Guitar Hero games (some songs anyway), the GTA series, and the LotR games also had excellent soundtracks.
I disagree on Mass Effect, seeing as how the music just loops over and over, especially on Virmire. It plays over everything, even when you're trying to talk to someone. Some of the other music was good, just not for the combat scenes.
