Live-Action Akira Film Is Still Getting Made

Contrary to earlier reports, the live-action adaptation of Akira is anything but dead.

Back in May, it looked like the live-action Hollywood remake of Akira was dead in the water. Keanu Reeves had just turned it down. Warner Bros. had reportedly shut down the visual effects group working on it, which meant that almost nobody was working on the project anymore. Well, it turns out this isn't actually the case: Warner Bros. is reportedly moving ahead with the project, with a new director and a revised budget.

According to The AV Club, director Jaume Collet-Serra (who directed Orphan and Unknown) has been attached to the film, and the budget has been reduced to $90 million. Collet-Serra was approached because:

...the filmmaker has become highly in demand for his signature directing style of not blowing a bunch of money, and his economically agreeable vision could be just what the project needs to become what is now being pitched as "a tentpole with a mid-level budget along the lines of Clash Of The Titans," a phrase that should be read in monotone and preceded by a resigned sigh.

The original plan for Akira was reportedly to make a two-movie epic, now it sounds like Warner Bros. want another soulless action piece that will bear nothing in common with its source material other than a couple of characters with the same names. Oh, and it will probably be widely-reviled by fans of the anime, but will make a slew of cash thanks to a brilliant marketing campaign.

I don't think there's enough fire in the world to kill this when it gets out...

Gonna have to send a Time Lord to sort this out I think.

Isn't this topic revived every month?
We've been assured of its existence for years now. I'm a die hard AKIRA fan, but even I'm done with complaining about how this is a bad idea...

Which kind? The Dr. Who kind or the Ultima kind? How about both? No amount of overkill is too good for this.

Actually, if the film keeps the names they had planned for the earlier version, the characters won't even have the same names as the characters in the anime -- which really makes one wonder why they're going forward with this at all. For cripes sake, can't they just call it something different, like, say, Mind Rider? It would save a lot of money on licensing, and the name is really the only thing left of the original.

Akira minus Keanu Reeves: slightly relieved.
Akira still being remade with America in mind (probably): no, just hell no.

If a live action version must be made, make it in Japan and base it off the manga and not the movie.

what movie isnt reviled by fans.

anyway, i never really planned to go see this, but considering how the Clash of the Titans wnet on polar opposites of each other (still think if they made a third one and met half way between the two it would be perfect), I have to see thsi to see if it will be the same or worse.

No No noononononnnonnoooonnoooooooooooooooooooooo! Okay i realize i have a bit fanboyish tendencies, but i didn't even like Akira that much and the story was kinda loose to begin with. If they can bring order and a decent plot to it then more power to the americans but considering their history well
and.....

....well you can imagine my confidence in them to be a bit lacking so I see where the akira fanboys are coming from which is why the only director i may be able to trust with this is james cameron and i still think avatar was not that great but i think he would get the point across with battle angel alita....maybe the matrix brothers could pull akira off....

It's not exactly like that; for instance, Transformers and Avatar were US-made in the first place. In my opinion, Hollywood just feels decadent; they chose Akira because it had a history, not because they cared for it.

Why is everybody trying to revive cyberpunk all of a sudden?
Let me sit you down and tell you a story!

Long ago...Hollywood made good movies that everyone loved and will be remembered forever.....but now they wish only for piles and piles of delicious money....So they find what hasnt been made into a movie or can be made for Americans (because some people cant read and watch at the sametime) so we pillage the other nations to take their movies and remake them in horrible American cliches and terrible souless actors.

Why cant we just rerelease the original into theaters?

Me: Die monster, you don't deserve to live in this world!
Akira movie: It was not by my hand that I live! I was created by directors who wanted to makke a Quick buck!
ME: A quick Buck!? You crush fans dreams and hope!
Akira Movie: Maybe the same can be said about all things which have fans!
Me: Your words are as cheap as the director who created you! Fandom dosen't need you in their memories!
Akira Movie: What is a fan? *Throw 7/11 cup to the ground* Nothing more then a muking acme covered fool. Have at thee!

Yeah, that's what I got to say about that.

Don't forget Cirque Du Freak. They fucking bastardised that film and its a horrible adaptation of the book. I can't believe this film is being made...
