Logan Takes Japan In Debut Trailers For The Wolverine

There's a lot riding on the success of The Wolverine, and these debut trailers seem rather promising.

Normally I'd be very excited to witness the first trailer from an upcoming Marvel Comics superhero flick, but after the execrable X-Men Origins: Wolverine, not even the promise of Logan/James Howlett/Weapon X doing his unhinged samurai thing in a modern retelling of Frank Miller's awesome "Wolverine in Japan" comic book stories can convince me to raise more than a half-curious eyebrow toward the flick. However, I will say that based purely on the two trailers embedded below - they're both the "debut trailer," but the one at right is the domestic version, while the one below is the international - I'm tentatively psyched for this thing.

Those of you who didn't spend your formative years reading Marvel's back catalogue (or watching the awesome Fox Kids animated series from the mid-90s), may not be aware that the mutant superhero known as Wolverine spent many, many years in Japan. There are dozens of intertwining storylines stemming from Logan's time in the Land of the Rising Sun, but the most important thing to know is that in an effort to control his animalistic urges, Logan sought out the teachings of a master swordsman who trained him using the samurai code. This resulted in the modern version of Wolverine who is largely composed yet still capable of unleashing his "berserker rage" whenever some dumb jerk needs to be slashed into a few hundred bloody pieces with a quickness.

Now that you know why this film will feature Wolverine fighting Yakuza analogues instead of Magneto, what do you think of the brief glimpses we're presented in the trailers? Personally, I like what I see there, though some of the camera angles and special effects seem a bit spotty. That sequence in the domestic trailer where Wolverine is "flying" on top of the train with his claws outstretched looks particularly silly.

Still, I like the premise and the part of me that will eternally remain a fun-loving child desperately wants to believe that this movie will be good. It just has to. IT HAS TO! I don't know if I can handle the disappointment of another X-Men Origins: Wolverine. No hyperbole: if director James Mangold finds some terrible way to include a mute Baraka-analogue that is somehow supposed to be Deadpool, I will openly weep like a seven-year-old girl who's fallen off her bike and skinned her knee, on her birthday, twenty minutes after finding out her cat died of feline leukemia.

I'm delicate.

I know I'll probably offend everyone who likes X-Men comics, but why would you choose to be mortal? That's what the trailer makes it out to be.

Well because immortality can be a curse when you consider that everyone you love and know will die around you leaving you alone over and over again.
Quite an interesting theme... I just doubt X-Men can sell that...

This has huge potential and after watching these trailers I can't say for sure whether I am excited or terrified. At least it looks like Silver Samurai will be a bad ass if the tiny glimpses in the international trailer are just a taste of things to come.

I admit I like the premise of the plot but it take more then that to convince me to go watch it at the cinema.

Because some people don't want to live for thousands of years, seeing everyone they love age and die before them. All the while you sit there, unable to make meaningful connections with others for an eterinity?
Problem with that logic is you should never get to know anyone older than you... IE parents Grandparents Aunts Uncles older siblings. Since the odds are that they will die before you. The alternative is to accept that people will die around you and enjoy what time you have with them.

Well Disney did a good job at showing how alcoholism can be destructive in Iron Man 2...... In the 70's Green Lantern dealt a lot with drug addiction issues, comics can be a lot deeper than many give them credit for.

However, that is the issue at hand. You can never get to know anyone or get close to them as you know they will end up dieing as you live on. The fear of forgetting them as time passes by is also an utmost concern as humans don't have an unlimited memory. Marrying a young women/man, having a child, and watching both of them age before you, unable to do anything. Then having the fear of forgetting them forever in a few hundred years is too much for any one person.

Sure, for the first hundred or so years: Immortality is cool! Awesome! But sooner or later you will wish you can die.
I have to throw my hat in the bin of immortality is ALWAYS beneficial. I'm not immortal, but I've still had to live through the death of loved ones. It's never easy, but with each loss, you gain perspective that helps you deal with it. I can only assume that an immortal being would have TONS of perspective on the matter to help them cope. If your concern is forgetting loved ones, that's exactly what happens when you age. Alzheimer's and general dementia can rob you of who you are. The longer you live, the higher the chance that one of these mental defects is going to claim you.

In the case of Logan's immortality, any memory loss (outside of plot devices like a bullet inside his brain) is simply the natural process of "out of sight, out of mind". If something is truly gone from your life (ie - dead), you can't cause pain to yourself by forgetting them...because the act of forgetting means that you're not actively thinking about them. This differs from mental defects listed above in that you don't have to deal with the reality that you've forgotten, unlike altzheimer's patients, who have to deal with the fact that they have grandchildren they have no recollection of. It's the separation from reality that's truly terrifying, and you don't really run that risk with being immortal. Also, if it's a worry for you, keep a journal/archive.

Looks like an improvement on the last Wolverine movie. Silver Samurai looks badass, but I'm a bit disappointed by the woman I'm assuming is supposed to be the Viper.

Oh goody I get to link people to cracked again.

http://www.cracked.com/article_18708_5-reasons-immortality-would-be-worse-than-death.html

That pretty much sums up my feelings on why I wouldn't want to be immortal.

Also, I forgot about this movie AGAIN. Fingers crossed.

I may not be a big expert on Wolverine, but it was my understanding that although he has an adamantium spine and a healing factor; he is not immortal. He may be very difficult to kill, but that doesn't exactly make one immortal.

Regarding the movie, after throwing Deadpool under the bus to make Origins, I just don't think I can bring myself to see this one. Not in the theaters at least.

Movie was dead to me the moment they cast Hiroyuki Sanada and DIDN'T give him the role of the silver samurai.

Instead they gave it to Will Yun Lee who isn't even Japanese!

Seriously, in what universe is he NOT the silver samurai? guy was made for the role.

Twlight Samurai, The Last Samurai, 47 Ronin coming out later this year.... Madness -_-

I guess it might be a blessing in disguise though, as you just know 90% of the camera time will be given to Hugh and everyone else will end up as a side note. Will be the Last Samurai all over again.
