Whatever, just wash your hands.
I want to get a new router since the one I'm on right now is old and it seems like the wifi is starting to get wonky.

I want a WPA3, wifi6, mimo router, having wifi6e would be nice, but those tend to get stupid expensive. So far I've been looking at a TP-link or an Asus, but both seem to have issues. Seems like every model of TP-link I look at uses a phone app and has a subscription and with the Asus it sounds like their security software can be wonky and a lot of people report that they seem to drop network frequently.

Is anyone who is currently up on routers give some pointers?

Depends on how much you want to spend, but I've always had pretty good luck with netgear routers.

I think pretty much all newer routers come have apps now to set up the router from your phone, so I'm not sure if you can avoid it with a wifi6 compatible router. I don't think you need to use the app after the basic first time set up though.

Can confirm asus routers tend to drop network frequently and need to be reset more often as they age.

Having an app and needing to use the app are usually two separate things, fyi.

Like, I can use the Netgear Nighthawk app to set up my router, but I just use the ol' IP address anyway

From what I've read it sounds like you have to use the app to setup the router for TP link, not sure if you have to use it past setup, but it kinda sounds like you do.
