Hey there! I'm looking for a serious game where you play through the game as the bad guy. NOT a game where you're given the CHOICE to be a bad guy, plenty of those out there, and not a game where your actions could be construed as bad but are more neutral than anything, but a game where you honest to goodness play as the bad guy. Games like Overlord would count, but they're also not serious at all. I'm hoping to find something with a good story, the kind of thing that would make me think. Anyway, I look forward to any suggestions!

God of War, I guess?

There really aren't that many, it's an extremely hard sell to gamers to have a serious game where you play as a horrid villain that isn't a strategy game.

Kane and Lynch are supposed to be absolutely horrible people, but I never played the game so don't take my word for it. Plus Spec Ops the Line...it's complicated.

Also, GTA I guess? Pretty much every GTA protagonist is a self serving asshole, but Trevor from V takes it up to eleven.

How about Payday? Robbing banks and shizz is pretty villainous.

Hatred?

Postal 1 and 2?

Overlord? Perhaps too cartoony, similar to above.

Spec Ops: The Line.

Prototype.

Dungeon Keeper or that kickstarter spiritual successor.

Could argue MSGV...but i wouldn't personally agree with that.

Infamous...kindof?

Scarface.

Nathan Drake collection. Haha! Ok, not funny? Alright then.

Erm, i feel i am missing something. Oh well, that'll do for now.

Well, if you consider the Templars to be the bad guys in the Assassins Creed games, then both AC III and AC:Rogue fit the bill. Though in 3 it's only for the first couple sequences and it's actually done kind of sneaky so you don't know that your character is a Templar until you're done with him. Rogue, OTOH, is more or less about an Assasin who gets pissed off at the Assasins and defects to the Templars, mostly because the Assassins are kind of being dicks, and then you go sail your pirate ship the North Atlantic ala Black Flag.

For one mission in CoD: Black Ops 2, you get to play as the Villain in a flashback.

Also, in CoD: Advanced Warfare, you work for the Bad guys for the first half the the game. You just don't realize they are the bad guys(Though being run by Kevin Spacey should have tipped you off).

I want to say Mass Effect 2, because you are working for Cerebus, which is a bonofide racist terrorist organization(Sorry, "Human Rights Movement") that commits war crimes. However, there is a Moral Choice system in ME series, and even though you have no choice but to do what the ILM says, you're never asked to do anything horrific. So I'm not sure if that counts.

Spec Ops The Line...in a way.

There's also The Darkness 2, where you play a guy who has access to unholy tentacles and can't make a cup of tea without severing the limbs of someone in the same square mile as him.

And I don't really know of many others.

I agree with the masses in saying that Spec Ops: The Line is probably a good bet. Not an FPS, but you're definitely not the hero of the story.

The Last of Us is probably a good choice as well. It also is not an FPS, but the main protagonist you sent the bulk of the game playing as is probably the most selfish, amoral, and downright evil characters I've ever played as. By the end of the game, there's no doubt at all that you've been the villain the whole time.

Not a FPS, rather RTS-ish.
Bullfrog's Syndicate (not to confuse with its reboot) and its sequel. You own a company and your goal is to take over the world to have a monopoly on pretty much everything.

Well, I think Bioshock counts. If you "eat" Little Sisters, the game treats you as a bad guy.

Panzer Corps Wehrmacht puts you in charge of the Nazis.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/268400/

It's a straight strategy game rather than a game where you round up Jews and gas them, but you are clearly the villain and it is not played for comedy.

Also you might try Mafia 2.

Unfortunately I have only played the first Mafia game, which isn't on Steam or GoG although you might find a copy on Amazon or Ebay. I liked the story, it was played for drama not comedy and you were, obviously a mobster, although the antagonist was a nastier mob boss than the one you were working for.

It may not be "serious", per se, but there's Braid... Just don't ask why until after you've played it...

Other than that, I was going to suggest Shadow The Hedgehog as a joke... but then you said there should not be a choice in the manner...

Saint's Row and GTA games all have you playing a gangster of some fashion. Even though those games hero-ize your characters.

The Darkness is again a hero-ized gangster.

Most games have you playing anti-hero rather than an outright villain. Most anything Bethesda has released, Fallout, TES, etc. give you the freedom to be...if not a villain, an complete prick.

Undertale let's you be evil and makes you feel like the worst person on the planet for doing so.

Infamous have a dark side play through

Any Star Wars game you play as the Sith in. (SWTOR, Unleashed).

There is stuff out there, it just really depends on what you define as villain.

Cartoonish villainy? Saint's Row 3 and 4. I'd personally skip 2, gameplay wasn't nearly as solid as 3 or 4 and the game had significantly less personality - felt like it was trying to be a cheap GTA knockoff. I recommend this some time after playing Spec Ops: The Line because regardless about how you felt about it you'll probably want to have some fun.
It's wierd you'd say "Skip SR2" considering SR2 is considerably darker then SR3 or SR4, and the Boss is much more of an asshole in 2, while in SR 3 and SR 4 s/he's more of a "Puckish Rogue".

That's not even getting into the "Fuzz" Mini-game, which involves committing atrocities while dressed as a police officer while a camera crew is following you around, for ratings.

Somebody mentioned Scarface and as much as I liked it, you weren't really The Bad Guy in the same sense you weren't really The Bad Guy in most GTA games. Especially since Montana specifically says he won't kill innocent civilians... Which will screw up a few firefights if you try and auto lock some jackass hiding behind a civilian during a firefight.
