Lost Ark is an MMOARPG that launched in Korea in 2018, it then spread to other eastern countries before finally coming to the West this week. On the surface Lost Ark looks like another Diablo-like game with the isometric movement and combat style between various hero classes the player can choose from. But in more detailed terms the game is like any other MMO you might have seen with a more action style combat system and a isometric viewpoint. After playing it for a few hours and watching many streamers dive into the game, my best comparison would be "If Tera and League of Legends had a baby".

The reason why I bring up League of Legends (or any MOBA really) is that with the isometric view and mouse clicking to move you already yield a bit of that comparison. Combined with the fact that the skills are all cooldown based off a series of hotkeys defaulted on the keyboard with q,w,e,r,a,s, and d. Some moves can be comboed together, while others are indepentant. Most of the cooldowns are pretty short, but are just long enough that you can't spam a single ability but if you rotate through them then the first ability will be off cooldown before your "rotation" is finished. However these abilties seem unresponsive, lagging just a enough behind you hitting the button that you'll reflexively hit it again to make sure the move happens. Considering this is action combat and you will be required to move away from attacks and out of aoe's, not having responsive controls is a bit of a problem.

Otherwise it plays like any other mmo except with an isometric camera. But in reality there is another problem with Lost Ark that many other Korean mmo's have suffered.....

The game is unrewarding as fuck. You are immediately given all your classes skills at level 1, the character progress lies in a talent tree that allows you to invest points into these skills to grant them extra effects like longer durations, more damage, shorter CD's and what not. None of these skill points feel like they effect gameplay much at all, but that effect could be gradual and more impactful over longer periods of time. Additionally the traditional things you would unlock and gain in a typical mmo are given to you immediately. You get a mount right away, meaning faster travel is not earned, you immediately get blue gear items and the first dungeon will give you epics which means the power and gear progression are meaningless and it doesn't feel rewarding to get new gear.

On top of that it is a free to play game so there are all the free to play bullshit things that tend to plague these asian games. Log in bonuses, milestone reward chests, pets, mounts, etc etc. In fact at level two I unlocked a reward chest that will grant me a set of legendary gear when I hit 50. Fucking why? What's the sense of playing and progressing if the rewards are already given to me?

To me it seems like it's a game that clearly was never really meant for outside Korea. This is the perfect game for them, they love this kind of thing over there, but in the West it just doesn't work because it removes any reason to play almost immediately. The english voice acting is hilariously bad in places too, and the story is nonsensical which is also on par for a Korean game.

I feel like you have to already be into this style of game to get anything out of Lost Ark to be honest. It's free though and there is no harm in giving it a shot. If you like Isometric, skill based action combat it might be your thing. Just don't expect to get much out of it.

Some of those might be because you brought one of the founder pack?

I'll be playing the game, but only because my group of friend is planning to, I also never enjoyed levelling in mmo and always rush to max level, so a lot of these issues doesn't really bother me. Also from what I understand 50 is just a sort of soft cap, so the legendary at 50 might be trash very quickly.

I'm sure playing with friends will help, but it's hard to judge games based on that because everything can be fun with friends.

I decided I had this game figured out when Steam recommended not one, but two Founder's Packs to me- but not the game itself.
...Isn't the game itself free?

*checks store* ...What the actual fuck? The Platinum Founders Pack is $99.99!

I'm always keen to try a free game. And this looks like something I'd be happy to waste a couple of hours on should the mood strike me. Not interested in the founders packs though.

I do sometimes do a free MMO trawl and this looks very...Korean. It's an aesthetic that just doesn't do much for me, even before you get into the F2PMMO issues. While I liked the old Norrath/Baldurs Gate series on PS2 the isometric ARPG has rarely been something I've enjoyed, Path of exile wasn't much fun for me.

Might give it a go if I get really bored.

Sooooo the launch isn't going great... at all... They decided to lock the server that were available at the premium lauch so that no new player can play on them, meaning any group of friend that didn't start all at the same time are screwed. And they're not saying if they'll implement server transfer later on. Oh and if anybody was thinking about restarting on another server with their friend, name are cross server, so you can't use your usual name if you've already started a character with it on another server.

In unrelated news, just realize that this is ported over by amazon game studio.

This i think is rather unexpectedly popular in the west. There were millions of people watching on twitch this week. I dont get it, but i doubt they expected so many people to jump into the game this fast.

So they re open the server once in a blue moon and I got lucky and sneaked in at some point and I've been playing a bit.

First of all, it's Korean, sooooooooo Korean. If you've played one like this before (black desert online for me) you're gonna feel really familiar. Remember when there was a million WoW clone? Even the most shameless WoW clone felt more different from each other than this. For those who don't know, crap load of currency that the game shower you with but never really explain what they are, a big epic quest where you are the chosen one (ignore everyone else) and over the character/armor design.

Otherwise it's rather enjoyable like a diablo clone, dungeon are fun as you mow down a bunch of enemies (100+ at a time). Questing is a bit strange, most quest are incredibly quick, like remember the "kill 10 boar and bring me their ears" type of quest, where you have to kill 20 boar cause mysteriously half of them don't have ears? Well this game does the opposite, you'll have to kill 3 and your done. You go trough area at an insane clip, but this is balanced out by the constant blabla, everyone keep telling you their life story for every quests (thankfully you can skip it all).

The game plays pretty well with a controller and the button layout is fully customization, so that's a big plus in my book as it avoid the dreaded claw hand of the diablos. Overall after like maybe 5-10 hours its decent as a F2P but I wouldn't drop any money on it.

I feel like the rush of popularity is strictly based off streamer hype and I can't imagine people who aren't willing to feed the P2W economy will drop off of the game pretty fast. I'm sure some people will stick to the game, there are always people who stick, but I can't see Lost Ark being mentioned in a month.

Yeah they marketed the game pretty hard but overall its nothing special and I doubt it'll sustain that popularity for long. I'm enjoying the game in a dynasty warrior type of game where you just mow down pack of ennemy and I haven't done any mmo with friends in awhile, but I don't know if I'd be playing so much of it if I was just going in alone.

The one thing it got going for it is that the game has been out a long time in korea so there's a metric ton of content for it, but it's also the K-mmo system of constant and non stop grinding. You grind to soft level cap then have to grind to real level cap (probably months), you then grind additional stats point, skill point, engraving points, card (give gameplay bonus and can themselves be leveled up), then gear can have random skill bonus and you can level up gear using another currency. You also have a stronghold where you need to research stuff and send expedition, setup a farm and so much more. And I'm not even covering a quarter of it, there's so much more to grind for.

Boring. The classes don't interest me in the slightest. Also, MMOs aren't fun, will die then no one will play with you or populate the world. Case in point Tera.

Kotaku is mad that the sexy korean girls are too sexy. So...another Tuesday.
You mean this article?

They're not exactly wrong, and they're not the only ones complaining. Many players voiced complaints or point it out. I don't care for the "outrage", but they all raised valid points. This is one of the few times where I'm not going to make fun of Kotaku.

I mean the game is like 4 or 5 years old. And it's one of those things where it's a culture difference. Korean games have a particular style (Tera had this same kind of thing) so what it really boils down to, is that Kotaku and other people bothered by this are really bothered by the culture's art style in which case they are being a bit racist maybe?

It's getting to the point of being puratanical at this point. Anything sexy is bad and women are not allowed to be sexy in anyway otherwise it's sexism and therefore is the worst thing ever.

I just don't understand why they have to write these articles and complain about every female character that dares to be sexy in anyway. God forbidden video game characters are attractive.
