It's incredibly clear that the game is made with a male audience in mind, within the first few minutes of the game you rescue a damsel in distress and that's how they introduce the relationship system, where you build up relation with character for minor bonus, it also take quite awhile until there's an equivalent male character introduced.
But I don't think there's anything wrong with that, not every game is meant for everyone, the developer calculated that they would gain more male gamer than they'd lose female one with a male centric focus, considering mmo population tend to heavily skew male that might not be a bad bet. I also think its perfectly fine for kotaku to write an article raising awareness of this, so that people who dislike this can steer clear of it. But Kotaku article veer into trying to shame the developer (and by association the player) for this which I think is deplorable.
