LoveFilm Marketing Boss Backs Publishers in Pre-Owned Sales Battle

It's only right that publishers try and make as much money from their games as possible, says LoveFilm executive.

The videogame industry has gained a seemingly unlikely ally in its battle to curtail pre-owned games sales. Rent-by-mail business LoveFilm, a European version of Netflix that also rents videogames, has said that it supports the efforts of publishers like EA and THQ to encourage people to buy games new rather than pre-owned.

At first glance, LoveFIlm might appear to be part of the problem, as rentals are another way of people playing games without actually buying them. Unlike pre-owned sales however, some money does goes back to the publisher with the rental model. LoveFilm's chief marketing officer Simon Morris said that he had observed rights holders experimenting with different methods of maximizing the return they got from their investments. He said that LoveFilm was entirely supportive of these experiments, as videogames were expensive to produce, and he thought it was only right that publishers should get as much of that back as possible.

It must be inconvenient for LoveFilm to have its customers deprived of certain game content because they're renting rather than buying, but you have to assume that it would be much more inconvenient for the company if publishers started to eschew game discs - which are LoveFIlm's stock in trade - in favor of digital distribution. We're a long way off from retail being overshadowed by downloads, but for LoveFilm, the longer it takes, the better.

OHHHH! So this is what Lovefilm is. I was wondering what the hell my friends on PS3 were using.

I thought it was some kinda porn service, with a name like LoveFilm.

Hrrm.... this is getting kind of sad and annoying in my opinion. I mean movies have used sales as well and they don't seem to be complaining about it. Besides even if you get retailers to go away people will just buy from their friends. Will someone please explain to me exactly how much developers lose from used game sales?

When the movie industry builds their own proprietary dvd player they will.

If they want people to buy games new in European countries, lowering the price from $80-100 USD would probably help.

I agree that a company has every right to make as much money from a product as they can.

BUT! After they sell that product, it is no longer their property.

They already do not rent things like Dragon Age Origins: Ultimate Edition, where you can install the dlc from the second disc and then play it without it. Which is a shame for me as I wanted to take advantage of that, but it does show they're at least somewhat on the ball.

Still not getting how publishers can think they have a right to so much as a penny from used sales. Guys, you sold the game to me, I can do with it as I please. You gave up the control when you took my money. Accept it, live with it and move on. Jeeze.

Nah. It's basically the European equivilant to NetFlix.
Well, it seems so require a UK postal code, so its pretty much restricted to Britain. Which is sad, because I wanted a Netflix in Germany so bad.

This. Selling your games/purchasing pre-owned is a fundamental consumers right. I can understand that they want the money, but it just seems wrong to me.

well what they are trying to do is treat games like software not toys with user agreements and stupid shit. Where you buy the license to play the game, not to sell it, mod it, rent it out, etc. Which Is why I think computer eulas are a crock of shit, putting in legal documents post purchase. I wonder if disagreeing with eula is grounds for returns to stores. Then again I can't remember if they are before or after the cd key.

Worse, the attitude behind this position is one that directly contradicts the concepts of a capitalist society. It undermines the concept of exchanging property, which is the basis for the entire world economy. It's such a crazy view, I have to question the intelligence of the publishers for taking it.
